The Mustangs rebounded after three straight tough losses to rush for 440 yards and beat the Milaca Wolves.
Jake Lindberg made the most of his move from tight end into the backfield almost immediately. During the first drive, he had a 62-yard run down to the one-yard line. However, Milaca's defense stiffened not allowing the Mustangs into the end zone.
"Teams began taking away Jake (at tight end)," said Coach Bryan Cook explaining the move. "He is a guy that needs X-amount of touches, so we decided to hand it off to him."
Lindberg certainly showed what kind of weapon he is, taking 21 handoffs for 247 yards.
Later in the opening quarter, Josh Mantel took off his first long-scoring play of the game. The 46-yard scamper put the Mustangs on the board first, 6-0.
Milaca quarterback Brandon Kiel led the Wolves on a long touchdown drive to take the lead. He finished it off with a 19-yard scoring strike.
"Kiel is a special player," said Cook of the Wolves quarterback. "We were able to keep him contained for the most part, but each time it seemed he was just one broken tackle from a big play."
Milaca had two long drives in the second quarter to burn up the clock, before fumbling inside Mustang territory to end the half.
After a poor first half, Coach Cook opted to take the wind in the third quarter and try to get the offense rolling again. "It was a gamble, but we needed to get out of the hole we were in," explained Cook.
The Mustangs responded driving down to the one, before Lindberg punched it in to take back the lead for good, 12-7.
Two long fourth-quarter runs helped the Mustangs put the game away with 20 straight points.
Both runs came from Josh Mantel and covered over 50 yards. The first was a 54-yarder and the second 66 yards.
Kiel took the Wolves on another scoring drive late in the fourth quarter, but it was too little too late for Milaca. He threw his second score of the day with 5:00 left, trimming the lead to 26-14.
Josh Mantel finished with nine carries for 178 yards and three scores.
Mora will travel to Little Falls to take on the Flyers this Friday.
