Fans of the Motherland rejoice! The BBC has confirmed details for Amandaland, a spin-off based on the hilarious comedy show.
The BAFTA award-winning series, which explored the challenges and chaos of modern parenting through a group of middle-class mums living in London's suburbs, aired from 2016 to 2021 with a Christmas special released in 2022.
Called Amandaland, the new show will focus on Lucy Punch's character Amanda, a wealthy and somewhat self-absorbed, yet deeply relatable mother, as she navigates the pressures of raising her kids following her divorce. Whether you’re watching it live or catching up on iPlayer this show is one you won’t want to miss.
Here’s everything you need to know about this highly anticipated spin-off.
Amandaland: What's it about?
Amandaland takes us back into the world of Amanda as she tries to create a new life for herself following her divorce.
Now based in South Harlesden with her teenage kids Manus and Georgie in secondary school, she has to try and get her head around the horrors of modern-day motherhood from teenage drinking to fake Instagram accounts and eco anxiety, while adjusting to her new life post-divorce.
While the new series will put Amanda front and centre of the show, other familiar faces will be back including Phillipa Dunne returning as Anne, Amanda's sidekick who often find herself following Amanda around and fulfilling her many demands.
The iconic Joanna Lumley will also be back as Amanda's mother Felicity, first introduced in season 3.
The show was commissioned by Tanya Qureshi, head of Comedy at the BBC, she said, "We can’t wait for audiences to see Amanda’s new chapter, brought to life by such a talented cast and a wonderfully sharp set of characters. It’s going to be a real treat."
Creator Sharon Horgan (Bad Sisters, Motherland) has said of the series,"I was genuinely sad having to say goodbye to Motherland. There's such a fondness for that show and those characters.
"So it was a real thrill to get to pick up the further adventures of Amanda and Anne, not to mention Felicity. Lucy, Phillipa and Joanna are top of their game in these roles and are joined by an incredibly funny and talented new cast. Can't wait to showcase the next challenges of parenthood and the very particular kind of friendship the school gates bring."
