I have had an Editors Keys Mac keyboard for while now reviewing it back in January 2014. But I have never had a Pro Tools keyboard to go with my Macbook Pro until now. I thought it was time to check out an overlay solution and turned to Editors Keys for a solution.
Unpacking The Keyboard Overlay
It comes in a slim cardboard wallet on a pull out piece of cardboard, which made sense because it is quite sticky and would have been difficult to pull it out of the packaging as it would how have come out easily and I might have stretched it. But getting it out was easy because I just needed to put the cardboard backing with it on.
Supports A Wide Range Of Macs
It was very easy to fit and I am very impressed with the fit, over the keyboard and it is good to see that the one overlay will not only work on my 15" Macbook Pro but also the 13" and 17" MacBook pro from 2008 onwards as well as a 13" MacBook Air, the 13" & 15" MacBook Pro Retina as well as the Wireless Mac keyboards. I guess they all use the same Apple keyboard.
Using The Editors Keys MacBook Pro Tools Overlay
I must admit I was a little apprehensive about how it would feel. Would it change the way the keyboard felt, both when using Pro Tools and for normal typing etc. Well after about 1 minute I forgot it was there, it fits so well and how ever it is made you just don't feel it. I guess if I had to really picky it does make the keyboard feel a little spongier, but it is very slight and very quickly you forget that it is there.
It is a great idea for laptops especially when you may use a variety of applications and need to swap your keyboard shortcuts and overlays. I cut off the top of the packaging so I had somewhere flat and secure to keep the overlay when I didn't need it, although I can see me leaving it on so that the keys don't mark the screen.
