A superlative cold store is being built in England: with a floor area of 15, 000 square meters and a height of 47 meters, the cold store in Easton is the largest in the country. The refrigeration technology for the "green" facility, thanks to green electricity, comes from an old acquaintance.
Double-digit sub-zero temperatures on over 15, 000 square meters: A cold store of superlatives is being built in Easton (Lincolnshire) in the east of England. At 47 meters, Magnavale's high-bay warehouse is a real colossus and is set to become one of the largest and most efficient cold stores in Europe. Inside the warehouse for frozen products such as fish or ice cream, temperatures of up to minus 28 ° C prevail, explain the planners.

The high-bay cold store is adjoined by a 35-meter-long expedition hall with 20 loading ramps. With a total of 101, 000 pallets, the new cold store is twice as large as the existing one for 44, 000 pallets at the site.
The refrigeration technology for the UK's highest cold store comes from Gea: the company developed a customized solution in which CFD simulations were first used to investigate the air flow and temperature profile within the high-bay warehouse according to the cold lake principle (the phenomenon known from nature that cold air, similar to water in depressions, forms regular cold air bubbles or "lakes"). According to those responsible for the project, the system will be fully automatic and run on 100% renewable energy.
Together with the customer, a two-stage ammonia refrigeration system with an optimized circulation rate was selected. The system consists of three screw compressors, three reciprocating compressors and three condensers. In addition, ten air coolers are used in the high-bay cold store and 22 further units in the loading station area. The screw compressors are used as lower-stage booster compressors and are coupled with Gea Grasso V-series reciprocating compressors to take advantage of the improved COP of the reciprocating compressors in part-load operation. This design maximizes cooling efficiency at all partial and full load operations.
Site operator Magnavale, headquartered in Chesterfield, is one of the UK's largest specialists in temperature-controlled food storage and value-added services. Its cold storage facilities are strategically located in the UK, providing efficient access to the market.
