The event marked the first time the iconic landmark has been lit up since 2000. The Los Angeles-based company projected 3D images from BET Network in conjunction with the BET Awards 2022.
LOS ANGELES, July 7, 2022 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- PaintScaping, a world leader in 3D projection mapping, lit up the iconic Hollywood sign late last month for only the third time in history, and the very first time images have been projected.
The Los Angeles-based company projected 3D images from BET Network on Friday, June 24, and Saturday, June 25, in conjunction with the BET Awards 2022.
A test run of the projection on June 21 wowed onlookers and caused a stir on social media as colorful designs flashed across the Hollywood sign. One TikTok post alone has had more than 500k views and over 115k likes so far.
"How insanely special to see it lit up for the first time in more than 20 years!" tweeted one fan enjoying Halsey's Hollywood Bowl concert when the sign lit up. Another tweet said: "This has been an entertaining half-an-hour watching the Hollywood Sign being lit up."
The projection took place from a house below the sign.
"I have been dreaming of mapping the sign for the last 20 years with my friend, Jeff Kleiser, who owns the house. We are proud and honored to be a part of this celebration," said Philippe Bergeron, founder and CEO of PaintScaping. "We used six Barco UDX 40 lumens for this projection. Lots of firepower!" continued Bergeron.
The Hollywood sign has not been lit since the 2000 New Year's celebration. Before that, it was illuminated in 1984 for the Olympic Games in Los Angeles. The sign, which initially said "Hollywoodland," was also illuminated from 1923-1933. It had fallen into disrepair until 1949, when The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce saved it, removing the "land" portion and creating the symbol for the entertainment capital of the world.
PaintScaping's other 3D mapping projects include the first-ever projection on an operational rocket at Cape Canaveral, Florida; a projection on the Bellagio Fountains in Las Vegas for the 2022 NFL Draft; an homage to Martin Luther King Jr, on the AFL-CIO headquarters in Washington, D.C.; being the first company to project on the East wall of the famous Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel in Los Angeles; and providing all the mapping for the Calvin Harris-Rihanna music video, "This is What Your Came For," which has 2.5 billion views on YouTube.
