Biography
I am an Australia-based researcher-educator in strategic communication. I am currently Senior Lecturer in Advertising and Public Relations at the QUT Business School. After I received my Ph.D. in communication from Purdue University in the US in 2015, I have embarked on a rewarding career journey in academia. I have worked with academic and industry colleagues (a) to conduct research that makes an impact on the industry and on society and (b) to develop the most up-to-date teaching materials for the future leaders of the communication industry.
I am a mixed methods researcher. I conduct research from both organizations' and stakeholders' perspectives. Since 2014, I have published 40 journal articles, eight book chapters, five industry blog posts and three industry reports. I have worked on six externally funded projects and have delivered nine presentations to industry stakeholders. I have led research teams and have published with more than 30 colleagues in Australia and internationally, including students and industry practitioners. My research has received four Top Paper awards and has been cited in policy advisory documents.
I am an industry-focused educator. I develop authentic assessments that require students to undergo the same thinking and working processes as industry practitioners. I have taught numerous university-level units in Hong Kong, the US and Australia. I currently teach a first-year introductory unit in public relations and a third-year work integrated learning unit in digital marketing, I am a Fellow of Higher Education Academy (FHEA) and an Associate Fellow (AFHEA) (Indigenous Knowledges and Perspectives).
I am currently serving in leadership roles on two committees within QUT. Externally, I am Associate Editor for the Journal of Public Diplomacy and on the Editorial Board for the Journal of Marketing Communications. I previously served as Secretary of the International Communication Association (ICA) Public Relations Division.
