A 50-year-old man attends the Emergency Department (ED) with extensive bruising to his penis. He thinks he injured his penis during sexual intercourse with his partner last week when abroad on holiday.
He says his penis seemed to bend in two during intercourse. He felt nothing wrong at the time but the next morning he noticed it was very bruised and swollen. The bruising extended over his groin and abdomen initially and his penis resembled an aubergine (see image).
His penis has not been particularly painful.
He has had no pain or difficulty passing urine and no haematuria. He takes no medications and has no past medical history.
On examination his penile shaft feels firm and slightly swollen on the right side. There remains some bruising and a lump is palpable on the right side of the shaft.
He asks for reassurance that it will get better with time.
