Take a look inside the new National Children's Hospital

The project team at the new National Children's Hospital on the site of St James's Hospital in Dublin say over 35% of the construction is now complete.

It is predicted that the hospital will be open to patients some time in 2024, but the final cost is still not clear.

Today, the media was invited in to take a look at how the work is going.

The main entrance of the new hospital

After years of delays and debate, the new hospital is taking shape. Outside the frame of the building is now complete. Inside, too the work goes on.

It is a project that has been contentious.

For years, the arguments centred around the location of the hospital, but more recently the focus has been on the delays and the final cost.

And while those leading the project are keen to point out the progress being made, it is clear from walking around the site, that the opening is still some way off.

The corridor leading to the operating theatre

The latest suggestion is that it will be open some time in 2024, but today those leading the project were reluctant to talk about specific dates.

When construction does finish, there will be a period given over to kit out the hospital with all of the necessary equipment, to make it ready for patients.

Phelim Devine, Project Director on the National Paediatric Hospital Development Board (NPHDB) said: "We're aiming to complete the job in 2023 and then the operation of commissioning will follow that.

"But again, that's a piece of work we're working very closely with all the stakeholders in terms of when the opening date of this hospital will be."

And what of the cost?

The latest official estimate is around €1.7bn, but there are fears that will increase.

The board has submitted an updated report to the Department of Health on revised timelines and costs. Its contents have not been published.

The Covid-19 pandemic has also had an effect. There are now 1,300 workers on site, working six days a week.

They had to down tools for four months because of the pandemic, which led to more delays.

There have been other issues too, with legal disputes between the board and the contractor ongoing.

It was once thought the hospital would be open by now at a cost of €650m, but that has proved not to be the case.

This project has seen its fair share of controversies and those leading it hope there are no further delays.
