A former Fianna Fáil councillor has pleaded guilty to harassing a woman on three occasions in 2022.

Joseph O'Donovan, formerly known as Gary O'Flynn, appeared before Cork District Court, where his solicitor Frank Buttimer told Judge Áine Clancy that his client was entering a plea of guilty to the charge.

Mr O'Donovan, 49, with an address at Melvindale House, Coolowen, Blarney in Co Cork, faced one charge of harassment contrary to Section 10 of the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act, 1997, on three dates between 30 July and 6 August 2022 at a location in Cork city.

The State's application was to have sentencing in the case adjourned until 30 April next to allow for the preparation of a victim impact statement.

Mr Buttimer told the judge that he will be seeking medical reports for his client which "might take some time" and sought a later sentencing date.

He added that he would like to receive a copy of the victim impact statement in advance of sentencing.

Judge Clancy adjourned sentencing in the case to 28 May.

Mr O'Donovan was in court for the short hearing.

As Gary O'Flynn, he was a Cork City councillor from 2003 until 2008 having been co-opted to fill his father Noel O'Flynn's seat when the dual mandate ban prohibiting Oireachtas members from sitting on a local authority first came into force.
