Triethyl citrate is an ester derived from citric acid, a naturally occurring compound. Reacts with potassium dichromate to produce potassium citrate, or with malonic acid to form triethyl malonate. Triethyl citrate is used as a reagent in analytical techniques for determining water permeability and biological properties. Additionally, it serves as a precursor in the synthesis of dimethyl fumarate (DMF).
