Lesson Cerrone

This lesson uses the programming environment Alice to create a game that quizzes 7th-12th grade algebra students on solving systems of equations. The lesson has students define systems of equations, explain solutions visually and verbally, and list methods for solving systems. Students then work through examples to determine the best method for different systems. In guided practice, students download and play a game file that quizzes them on solving systems. Their performance is assessed by comparing points scored to tries, with remediation for those needing more tries.

Name of Lesson: Using Alice to practice system of equations

Grade Level: Subject: Prepared by: 7-12 Algebra 1 Beth Cerrone

Overview and Purpose: Alice is an interactive programming environment initially developed to help students understand the concepts of Object Oriented Programming. It can also be used to develop games to help students be more engaged in other curriculum areas. Alice was used in this lesson to practice (or quiz) students who have been already given an introductory lesson on system of equations. Colorado Math Standards: Standard 2: o Solving problems involving functional relationships using graphing calculators and/or computers as well as paper/pencil techniques. o Solve problems that can be written as a linear system of equations. Standard 6: o Select and justify functions to model and analyze problems. Objectives: Students will be able to least 80% accuracy. Students will be able to equations (graphing). Students will be able to particular problem. Students will be able to solve the system of equations quiz with at visually explain the solution to the system of differentiate the best method to solving a verbally explain their solution.

ALICE AND SYSTEMS 1

Lesson Structure:
Anticipatory Set (10 minutes): As a group: Define system of equations. Explain verbally and visually what is a solution to a system. List at least two different methods for solving this system. Direct Instruction (20 minutes): Put three examples on the board. Have students determine what method would be best for solving each system. Have students put the solution up on the board as well as explaining why they feel their method was best for that problem. Guided Practice (30 minutes): In computer lab, download Alice 2.2 from www.alice.org. Open the System.a2w file from the shared folder (or however you would like to share the file) and go through a demonstration of how the program works. Have each student open and play the program System. Assessment: Compare the number of points scored to the number of tries as the students move through the program. Students who have more tries than points will need remediation. Students will write down the problems and their work to turn in at the end of class. If you choose to use this as a quiz, divide the number of points by tries to get a percentage grade.
