Polynomials:: X y X Xy

This document provides instructions and examples for adding and subtracting polynomials: 1. Polynomials are expressions with whole number exponents containing terms summed together. A term has a number and variable part. 2. To add polynomials, combine like terms by adding their number parts and leaving the variable part alone. Unlike terms cannot be combined. 3. Problems are provided to practice adding, subtracting, and combining polynomials.

Math 060 WORKSHEET 6.

1 Adding and Subtracting Polynomials

NAME:_________________________

Polynomials: A term is defined as an expression containing a constant or the product of a constant and one or more variables. Any term is made up of a number part and a variable part. Terms: 3 x 2 & 5 are two different terms. 3 x 2 5 is not a term (it is two terms).

A Polynomial is defined as a single term or the sum of two or more terms containing only whole number exponents on its variables. Polynomials: 3 x 2 4 x 2 & 4 xy 2 + 3x 2 3 y + x 2 are polynomials. Not Polynomials:
3x + 2 & 3 x 2 + 4 x 2 2 are not polynomials. x +4

A monomial is a polynomial with one term, a binomial is a polynomial with two terms, and a trinomial is a polynomial with three terms. Give an example of a: Monomial: _____________ Binomial:____________ Trinomial:_____________ The degree of a term is the sum of the exponents on the variables. Term: Degree:
3x 2 y 4

5x 4

14 x

34

____

____

_____

___

The degree of a polynomial is determined by the term with the largest degree. EXAMPLE: Determine the degree of the following polynomials: a.) 4 x 4 y 13 x 7 y 2 x 6 b.) 3x 4 4 x 3 + 2 x 2 3

A polynomial that is written in standard form will have its terms written so the exponents will be in descending powers. EXAMPLE: Write the polynomial in standard form:
3 x +14 x 3 3 xy 15 + x 2

COMBINING LIKE TERMS To add two objects, they must be of the same units. We cant add feet and inches because they dont match. The same goes for terms. They must be like terms.
3 x + 7 x = ( 3 + 7 ) x = 10 x 5 xy 8 xy = ( 5 8) xy = 3 xy

To add two like terms: Combine their _______________, and leave the ____________part alone. 1

How do we combine unlike terms? _________________ What is the opposite of x 3 + x 2 3 x + 5 ? ___________________ EXAMPLE: Perform the following operations a.) ( 6 y 3 + 2 y 2 y 11) ( y 2 8 y + 9 ) b.) ( y 5 3 y 3 ) ( y 4 5 y 3 )

c.) ( 4n 2 3n + 2 ) + ( 6n 2 + 12n 4) (11n 2 7 n 3)

d.) Subtract ( 2 x 2 4 x + 3) from 4 x 2 8 x + 11

3 3 e.) x x x + x

f.) Find the difference when 32 x 2 17 x + 45 is subtracted from the sum of 23 x 2 12 x 7 and 11x 2 + 12 x + 7

g.) ( 0.02 x 2 + x .004) (.01x 2 + .0001x .02 )
