FLAPS - TROUBLESHOOTING

Troubleshooting the flap system is used to determine if trouble exists in the position indicating system, flap asymmetry detector system, flap hydraulic system or electrical circuit. Effective troubleshooting is accomplished by rationalization. The troubleshooting procedures in this section are furnished as a guide. Listed below are three charts provided for troubleshooting the flap system. Chart 1 - Flap System (Electrical) Troubleshooting Chart 2 - Flap System (Mechanical) Troubleshooting Chart 3 - The Roll-off Squawk Data Sheet is provided as an aid for the technician. The data sheet is designed to gather pertinent information from the flight crew during debriefing, and as an aid for flight testing. The technician is encouraged to copy this data sheet and utilize it whenever possible.

WITH NORMAL VOLTAGE AND HYDRAULIC PRESSURE APPLIED, OPERATE FLAP FROM UP TO DOWN POSITION
FLAPS FAIL TO MOVE. CHECK THAT FLAP AND FLAP POSITION CIRCUIT BREAKERS ARE ENGAGED.
FLAPS MOVE AND THEN STOP AND FLAP ASYM LIGHT ON ANNUNCIATOR PANEL ILLUMINATES, CHECK FLAP ASYMMETRY WITH PROTRACTOR.
DOES LIGHT EXTINGUISH? CHECK RESULTS OK NOT OK CONNECT P012 AND DISCONNECT P345 FROM INBD FLAP ASYMMETRY DETECTOR. ADJUST OR REPAIR FLAT POSITION SWITCHES IN CENTER PEDESTAL. CHECK ELECTRICAL CIRCUIT WIRING. IS VOLTAGE OK? YES CHECK RESULTS OK NOT OK REPLACE DETECTOR AND/OR REPAIR WIRING. CHECK AND ADJUST LEFT AND RIGHT FOLLOW-UP SWITCHES. NO CHECK FLAP ASYM CUTOUT RELAYS ON A193 PCB FOR RESISTANCE. YES YES NO
CHECK ELECTRICAL CIRCUIT WIRING BETWEEN P125 CONNECTOR OF VALVE PACKAGE AND P126 CONNECTOR OF FOLLOW-UP SWITCH UNIT. DISCONNECT P125 CONNECTOR AT VALVE PACKAGE. CHECK SOLENOID VALVE CONTINUITY (COIL RESISTANCE) BETWEEN PINS F AND E, F AND D, C AND A, AND C AND B.
CHECK RESULTS DOES LIGHT EXTINGUISH? NO CHECK FOR DEFECTIVE LEVERS, RODS, RAILS AND ROLLERS. CHECK FOR IMPROPERLY INSTALLED FLAPS. RE-ROUTE CABLES PROPERLY ON PULLEYS, SECTORS AND LEVERS. OK NOT OK
TROUBLE IN THE HYDRAULIC SYSTEM. CHECK HYDRAULIC SYSTEM. IF OK, REPLACE FOLLOW-UP SWITCH UNIT.

DETERMINE DIRECTION
ELEVATOR GO TO SHEET 3.
FLAPS
SPOILER GO TO SHEET 2.
CHECK TRAVEL LIMITS. CHECK FLAPS IN THE "UP" POSITION OR "O" IN AND OUT OF THE COVE. CHECK FLAPS IN THE "UP" POSITION OR "O" UP AND DOWN.
PROCEED TO BLEED HYDRAULIC SYSTEM OR INSERT RIG PINS AND CHECK CABLE TENSION.
CHECK THE ECENTRIC ROLLER BEARING, ROD ENDS AND THAT THE ACTUATOR RIGS CORRECTLY. REPLACE AS REQUIRED.
BLEED THE HYDRAULIC SYSTEM OR CHECK TRAVEL. REFER TO SERVICE COMMUNIQUE #30 FOR BLEEDING PROCEDURES.
LOOSEN CABLES AND CHECK QUADRANT BEARINGS, REPLACE BEARINGS AS REQUIRED, AND TENSION CABLES.

ENSURE CONTROL WHEEL IS IN NEUTRAL POSITION. VISUALLY INSPECT EACH WING LEADING EDGE - SPOILER - TRAILING EDGE FOR MISMATCH.

Chart 3 Roll-Off Squawk Data Sheet Description of problem: (What speed, altitude, and flight configuration [course, approach, climb, descent, etc.] did the problem occur. Did adding power or decreasing power change the characteristics? Verification Flight Test: Please collect the following data at the listed flight configurations below. *If roll-off occurs with flap extension do Checks 1 and 2. *If roll-off occurs with speed brake deployment, no flight check is required.
Check 1: Speed 165 KIAS, 15,000 ft. MSL with auto-pilot off, manually trim the airplane for straight and level flight. Do not reset roll trim for remainder of flight test (Check 1).
Record roll trim______________________ RH______LH______ Record rudder trim___________________ RH______LH______ Open the roll trim circuit breaker.
Select 10 flaps. Release the controls and fly for 10 seconds. Record bank angle after 10 seconds _____ RH______LH______ Return to straight and level flight (roll trim circuit breaker open). Select 20 flaps.

Select 30 flaps. Record rudder trim ___________________ RH______LH______ Release the controls and fly for 10 seconds. Record bank angle after 10 seconds _____ RH______LH______ Return to straight and level flight (roll trim circuit breaker open).
Check 2: High altitude maximum cruise: With auto-pilot off, trim the airplane to fly straight and level at 200 KIAS at 15,000 ft.
Record roll trim______________________ RH______LH______ Record rudder trim___________________ RH______LH______ Open the roll trim circuit breaker and do not change roll trim for the rest of the flight. Climb to 35,000 ft. MSL and increase speed to max. continuous power. Release the controls and fly for 10 seconds. Record bank angle after 10 seconds _____ RH______LH______
FLIGHT TEST COMPLETE Re-trim Pitch and Yaw as required and return to base.
Ground inspection after flight checks: After the airplane has returned from flying either Check 1 or 2, the mechanic is to measure and record the setting of the roll trim tab and rudder trim tab at the control surface as well as record the cockpit roll and rudder trim settings.
