1Class: Art 1 Textbook: Art Talk, Basic Design Skills Prerequisite: None Course Description: This class is the

beginning of the structured art program at WhittemorePrescott High School. It is primarily intended for students who have a sincere interest in exploring the arts and various art mediums. Students will learn basic design elements in drawing, painting, and ceramics. Emphasis is on exploration so that students will receive a general introduction to art. The course will include working with pencils, colored pencils, markers, colored paper, clay, tempera and acrylic paint, and other craft type materials. Objectives: 1. Students will show self-confidence when involved with his/her own art projects. 2. Students will be able to evaluate their own art work and the work of others. 3. Students will understand that art can be a source of personal enrichment. 4. Students will be able to produce two dimensional art projects using line, color, shape/form, texture and value. 5. Students will learn to select proper tools and materials to produce a work of art. 6. Students will produce three dimensional projects in clay, papier mache, and found objects with knowledge of their properties and limitations. 7. Students will demonstrate an understanding of various artists, art periods, and art mediums. 8. Students will exhibit their work in a professional manner. Course Content: 1. Throughout the semester students will be shown various artworks and participate in discussion for each area of study. 2. Students will learn and create various artworks incorporating basic design elements. 3. Students will study and demonstrate knowledge of color theory. 4. Students will learn and demonstrate knowledge of composition. 5. Students will learn and demonstrate perspective drawing. 6. Students will create a cone, sphere, and cylinder using shading. 7. Students will create a two dimensional design using string art. 8. Students will create a coil pot and pinch pot using clay. 9. Students will glaze or stain ceramics. 10. Students will create a design using fabric for tie dye. 11. Students will create a papier mache mask. 12. Students will create a stained glass design using tissue paper. 13. Students will create a painting in the impressionist style. 14. Students will create a two dimensional art work using pastels. Homework-there is very little homework in this class. Students will be required to complete various worksheets throughout the year. Tests-at the completion of each unit there will be a unit test.

Clean Up-each student is required to clean up their immediate area and then go to their assigned cleanup area for daily points. The jobs are assigned by lottery and are rotated every two weeks. 5 points per day. Points will not be given for unexcused absences. Calendar-each day the student must copy down the day's assignment on a calendar that is checked at the beginning of the following week. 5 points per day. Reference File-pictures from magazines, books, photographs, postcards, calendars, newspapers, or sketches are to be included in a file. There are 50 required for each marking period. 100 for each semester. Make-up Work and Unexcused Absences: It is the students responsibility to request and complete any missed class work. Make-up work for unexcused absences will not be permitted. Missing assignments due to unexcused absences will result in 0 credit. If a student has unexcused absences during a long term project, the project grade will be reduced by 5% for each unexcused absence. Late Work: I do not accept late work. If there are extenuating circumstances please see me to discuss the situation. Matting-you must matt one drawing correctly by the end of the semester. This assignment is equal to one major project grade. It is your choice of artwork. Dont wait until the end of the semester to do this. Supplies-your picture, ruler, razor knife, tape, or glue stick. ProcedureA. Measure your picture. 1. Is it square? If it is, the top and sides of the matt should be the same size and the bottom should be the widest. 2. Is it vertical? If it is, the bottom should be the widest, the top second widest, and the two sides narrowest. 3. Is it horizontal? If it is the bottom should be the widest, the sides second widest and the top smallest. B. Lay your picture on a piece of matt board, draw a line around it once its been placed according to the proper proportions. But do not cut the matt on this line or the picture will fall out through the hole. Draw a new line inch smaller than the first line around the picture. Cut on this new line. You will also be required to do some reading such as handouts, tests, books, and magazines, which will be provided to you at the start of each project. In addition to the handouts you will receive, you will be responsible for taking notes on demonstrations, lectures, movies, and videos, etc. Each unit of study may be followed up with quizzes, tests, written assignments, or whatever means of assessment decided upon by the instructor. Tools and Supplies-we operate on trust and honesty. OH Yes! Some people will rip off equipment-----That means YOU will not have it to use! Use them/Clean them/Return them.
