Pathophysiology

Risk Factors:
Non-Modifiable: Age(newborn)
Modifiable: Uninstitutionalized delivery, Environment

Infection

Systemic Inflammatory Response Syndrome

Response to a wide variety or clinical insults:
-hyperthermia
-tachycardia
-tachypnea
-increased WBC

Sepsis
SIRS with hypotension in response to infection

Severe Sepsis
Sepsis with organ dysfunction, hypoperfusion or hypotension.
May include change in mental status, oliguria, hypoxemia, or
lactic acidosis.

Septic Shock
Severe sepsis with persistent hypotension despite adequate
fluid resuscitation

Multiple Organ Dysfunction Syndrome

Presence of altered organ function such that homeostasis
cannot be maintained without intervention.
