February 16, 2014 Dear BHMS 7/8 Band Parents, Hundreds of middle and high school bands and

orchestras in the state are gearing for District Band and Orchestra Festival season. Im very excited about the 7th & 8th grade bands participation in the MSBOA District IV Band Festival this year. After more than a decade of not participating, and since the return to festival three years ago, the BHMS 7th & 8th grade band has received consecutive 1st division ratings, the highest possible. We certainly would like to keep that record going. What is Band & Orchestra Festival? Since 1935, the Michigan School Band and Orchestra Association (MSOBA) have run festivals for school bands and orchestras. This is not a contest, but instead student groups are graded in five music categories: Tone, Intonation, Rhythm, Technique, and Interpretation and are classified based on the size of the school. How are the students judged? Three adjudicators judge the concert portion of the festival. They are veteran teachers or professors who have been certified by MSBOA to judge Band & Orchestra Festivals. Each judge grades the groups on a scale of I-V, with I being the highest rating. Those three ratings are then averaged into a Concert Rating, which in turn is averaged with the Sight-Reading Rating for the Final Rating. What is Sight Reading? After the group performs on stage, we will be ushered into a different room for Sight Reading. Students will be asked to perform a new piece of music they have never seen or played before. We have 4 minutes to discuss the selection before we perform for the judge. Can Parents Attend? YES! Please do! We really need parent support in the audience and through the entire festival process. In addition, I need about 6-7 parents to chaperone. Students will be working hard on the three pieces we will be playing for judges on March 12, 2014 at Kettering High School in Waterford, and the performance time is rapidly approaching! Please review the information below, and make sure that your child understands his/her responsibilities. This is our most important performance of the year so far, and your students participation and 100% effort toward this goal is a requirement for him/her to be successful in band and for our band to be successful at band festival. Students should be practicing their parts each and every day as music performance is a team effort. Our students are terrific young people, but it takes the efforts of all students to have a successful performance. This includes both band class and at home practice. Every students effort and attendance at the combined rehearsals will contribute to a successful festival performance and experience. Heres the schedule for the upcoming weeks.

Students should wear their uniform to school that morning, but bring a change of clothes to change into when we return to school. Concert Uniform: Boys: Black dress pants, Black dress shoes, black socks, long-sleeved, white tux shirt. Bow tie and cummerbund provided by the school. Girls: Black slacks or Black skirt (knee length or longer), white, dressy blouse with sleeve. Students not wearing the appropriate concert uniform will not be permitted to perform. I will need at least 6 7 parents to chaperone, ride the bus with us to and from Festival, and to be available as we go through the festival process to assist us in the festival process or to attend to individual students that may have needs or emergencies that I cannot attend to. In addition, parents will assist with boys to put on the cummerbunds and bow ties. Please indicate on the permission slip if you can chaperone. Maps to Waterford Kettering will be available before the festival, so that even if you cant ride the bus, you can come hear our band perform! Its an intense and fascinating procedure. Youll especially enjoy the Sight-Reading room! Musically, Paul F, DeRubeis Director of Bands Bloomfield Hills Middle School
