How to ask questions in English

Basic question structure
In English we always need an auxiliary verb to ask questions. These are the most frequent auxiliary verbs in English: To be: is / are / am To have: have / has Can /could Will / would

And this is the structure of a question in English: QUESTION WORD AUXILIARY VERB SUBJECT VERB ?

The main question words are: What, Where, When, Why, How, Who, How much, How many, How old, How far, etc If the main verb is to be (is /are/am) we dont need the verb cell. QUESTION WORD What AUXILIARY SUBJECT VERB is your name VERB ? ?

If the main verb is to have got, we write got in the verb cell. QUESTION WORD How many books AUXILIARY VERB have SUBJECT you VERB got ? In your bag?

Or we can use can/ could / will / would as an auxiliary verb.

QUESTION WORD What languages Where What

AUXILIARY VERB can will would

SUBJECT they you you

VERB speak go like ?

tomorrow? to drink?

Questions in present and past simple

Affirmative sentences in present and past simple havent got any auxiliary verb. Ex: I study English everyday I gave a present to Mary But as we have said before, they need an auxiliary verb when asking question. In present simple the auxiliary verb is DO or DOES (3RD person singular) In past simple the auxiliary verb is DID AUXILIARY VERB do did does SUBJECT you you he live eat go VERB ? ? yesterday? to school?

QUESTION WORD Where What What time

The mark of 3rd person singular (-s/es) or past (did) is in the auxiliary verb. In the verb cell you write the plain infinitive: live (infinitive without to)

If the question is a type YES / NO answer question, we dont need the question word? Ex: Do you like pizza? Yes, I do or Yes, I like pizz. Can you ride a motorbike? No, I cant or No, I cant ride a motorbike.
