Poem No. 1

The poem expresses the writer's frustration with an assignment from their English teacher to analyze a metaphysical poem. In three sentences, the poem discusses the writer's reluctance to complete the assignment as they see little relevance of literary analysis to their interests in science. They find the teacher to just be an "appliance" enforcing required classes and see their relationship as forced. In the end, the writer begrudgingly completes the assignment to fulfill requirements but maintains they find little value in it.

Analysis of the Metaphysical

The tyrant said,
Go home and imitate,
like an inmate,
a page tonight.
And let that come out of you ---
Then, it will likely be askew.

I wonder how much effort I have to put into this?
I am sixteen, white, born in Colorado,
the state with a need for weed.
But hey, at least it isnt speed.
I get on the interstate, get home about four,
sit down at my desk, surely not a troubadour.
I start, hoping what I write wont offend too badly.
But to hell with it, I will compose madly.

Its not so easy to know what is true for you or me
but its easy to see the incompatibility.
Im a natural philosopher, studying the sciences.
You teach literature, just an appliance of the English pseudosciences.
At least its not European History,
where every new topic is just a blistery mystery of liberty, trickery, victory and field artillery.
What Im trying to say is that I like a challenge,
whether that be in the mystery of history or the cellular policy of Biology.
I guess being empirical makes me more critical,
and less interested in the analysis of the metaphysical.

You are a part of me,
but this relationship is forced, you see.
If it was not required,
I would not be doing this now.
But I would be missing out on the instillation of this quality education
I cant seem to find a use for it,
and this is what is true.
I guess its just not my type of class,
and so I take it out on you.
This is a composition of unfavorable position in opposition to the requisition of general education.
But I guess the final requisition
is no longer our decision.
