The following is a rare Sri Surya Hrudaya Stotram from Kurma Puranam, Chapter 18,
which describes the daily duties (Nitya Karma) of Grahasthas such as bathing (Snana),
Sandhyopasana, Agnihotra, Tarpana, Pancha Maha Yajna, etc. The Puran prescribes that
the following hymn on Surya should be chanted while performing Surya Upasthanam
(immediately after Gayatri Japa and Gayatri Upasthanam) in the morning and afternoon.
The Phalashruti mentions that this hymn on Lord Surya originated from Lord Brahma
and is being chanted with due devotion by Rishis. This hymn is capable of destroying ones
sins. This should be given to sons and disciples. A unique phenomenon of this hymn is that it
treats Lord Surya and Lord Rudra as one and the same.
