I
T WAS THE summer
vacation therefore the
children were at home.
Suddenly, the sound of,
Parrot, I am a parrot Chi
chi chi was heard in the
street. The children ran out of
their houses and found a man
standing with a parrot. It was
a beautiful parrot, dressed in
a red shirt, green pants and
red cap. It had a beautiful
necklace round its neck.
The man with the parrot
was now sitting in the shade
of a house.
Children, my name is
Shantou. This is Kunmun
Parrot. It is a dancing parrot.
Now Kunmun will show you
his dance, said Shantou as he
turned towards the parrot.
As soon as Kunmun heard
this it flew and settled on the
ledge of Malti Auntys
window. Then it started
singing, Hurr dabang
..dabangdabangdabang.
Kummuns dance was so
good that the children rolled
with laughter. There was a
loud applause.
Kunmun showed other

dances. The children gave money and some eatables
to Shantou who collected everything and went from
there.
However that same night there was robbery in
Malti Auntys house. The thief took away everything
from the house. Though the police came, they had no
clue as to who was the thief.
How should we find out about the robber?
thought Mayank, Neene and Oshi as they sat in their
room.
Brother, I suspect Shantou. He must have robbed
the house, said Neene.
Oshi said, I too feel, that he is the thief.
Let us see. If Shantou comes today we will keep
a watch, Mayank said.
Next day Shantou came again. He asked Kunmun
to dance. Kunmun flew and perched on Sharma
Uncles window-sill. Then he sang and danced.
Whenever he turned around the necklace round his
neck shone brightly.
The children were busy watching the dance but
PRABHAT
Mayanks sharp eyes were focused on Kunmuns
necklace. He saw that the necklace had a micro-
camera which flashed constantly. At that moment
there was loud clapping for the dance was over.
Shantou gathered everything the children had given
and went away.
Mayank, Neene and Oshi also went home. The
three of them were awake though it was night. They
whispered to each other and went out of the house.
They went and hid in
Sharma Uncles garden.
Then they heard the
sound of feet approach-
ing. In the dim light
they saw it was Shantou.
Shantou looked
around furtively and
went to the door of
Sharma Uncles house.
He opened the door
with the master key and
went in. Immediately
Mayank jumped swiftly
and locked the door
from outside. Then all
three of them started
shouting loudly, Thief
thief
Everyone came out of
their house. The parents
of the three of them
came too. Their father
first rang the police and
then inquired from Mayank, Where is the thief?
Mayak explained everything. All of them caught
Shantou, by then the police also arrived.
On being interrogated by the inspector Shantou
admitted that he was a robber. It was on his directions
that Kunmun would fly to one of the windows and sit
there. He would then whirl around and dance. When
he did this the camera in the necklace would take
pictures of the inside of the house. Shantou would go
home and see on the computer what was inside the
house and where everything was placed in the rooms.
Then at night he would use the master-key to open the
door and steal the articles.
B
ut parrot-man, today when Kunmun danced
the necklace shone more than usual. This was
where you went wrong for my whole attention was
focused on the necklace. I came to know that a camera
was fixed in the necklace and its flash light kept
shinning. I understood everything. We then hid in
Sharma Uncles garden and what transpired after that
is now evident said Mayank his eyes dancing.
But how were you so sure that tonight Sharma jis
house would be burgled, questioned the inspector.
Very simple, quipped in Neene, The day the
first robbery took place Kunmun Parrot sat on Malti
Auntys window-sill, and her house was burgled at
night. Today Kunmun sat on Sharma Uncles window
and .
And inspector uncle we have a detective mind,
said Oshi, and everyone laughed.
The inspector patted their back and everyone
present there praised all three.

Sonu Lost
That day also the whole family was out looking
for peanuts. Naughty Sonu sometimes lay on the
green grass or climbed up a tree swiftly. His
mother admonished him time and again. But he
ignored it as he was engrossed in his own fun.
Suddenly when he looked in front he was
shocked. He could not see either his mother or his
brothers and sisters.
Oh where have all of them disappeared? Sonu
uttered in surprise. He looked around but could
not find them. He was near tears. He started
running on his small petite feet.
Little squirrel where are you running off?
asked Titoo Parrot who was flying in the sky.
My name is Sonu. I am looking for my mother
and co-born. Our house is near the river but I do
not know the way, said Sonu in one breath.
I only eat chillys. I do not know where the river
is, said the parrot, which disap-
pointed Sonu. However he
did not lose courage. He
climbed on to the highest
branch of a tall tree and
shouted loudly Ma Ma,
but to no avail.
Why are you
shouting so loudly?
My children will
wake up. With
great difficulty I
have put them to
sleep, Neelu
Hen-sparrow
RAMENDRA NATH
reprimanded him.
I have lost my way and I am looking for the
river. My house is near it. Do you know where the
river is?
Sonus innocence brought a smile on Hen-spar-
rows face. She said, I do not know anything
about the river for my children are young. Since I
have to look after them I am unable to get out of the
house. If you want you can stay here with my
children.
Sonu thanked the hen-sparrow. He was missing
his mother very much, therefore he ran from there.
In the muddy pond in front, Piggu Pig was
rolling in the slush.
Squirrel brother where are you rushing? Stop
to catch your breath, commented Piggu, seeing the
distraught condition of Sonu.
Sorry friend, I do not have time just now,
July (Second) 2011 11
replied Sonu breathlessly, I am looking for my
family. Do you know how far the river is from this
place?
Oh no! Do not take the name of the river.
There is no fun in the river compared to rolling in
the slush. Moreover I do not recollect where the
river is, for I was very young. You should take the
help of an animal who goes to bathe in the river,
suggested Piggu. Sonu liked his suggestion and
carried on.
You little squirrel, get off my way, or I shall
trample you, Sonu was transfixed on hearing
these words of the elephant who was coming
towards him from the front.
E
lephant Uncle, please stop, shouted Sonu.
The elephant somehow staggered to a halt
with great effort.
If I had broken my feet I would have wrung
your neck, said the elephant grinding his teeth in
anger.
I have saved your life and instead of thanking
me you are scolding me. Look, the hunters have
dug the ground to catch the elephants. If you had
taken one step more you would have fallen into the
dugout.
Now the elephant was alert. He thanked Sonu.
But what are you doing in the forest? inquired
the elephant.
I am looking for my family. They live near the
river.
Oh, I am going towards the river, said the
elephant as he seated Sonu on his back.

worried at his being
so late.
Ma! I have come,
heard everyone and
they smiled in relief.
They came out and saw
Sonu coming seated
on the back of the
elephant.
Sonu, where have

ATEY CAT WAS good looking but she was
black in colour. She was not fair like the other
cats of Chandanvan. Black cats know black
magic, was the thought that was rampant in the whole
forest. They control the children. If they cross the
path then accidents take place.
Firstly the black colour and
on top of it the various
rumours that were spread.
The animals of
Chandanvan avoided
her like the plague and
kept their children
from her sight.
One day Blacky
Bear was going for an
interview when he
came across Katey Cat.
How inauspicious.
This black Katey has
crossed my path. Now I will
not get the job, Blacky Bear said.
Blacky brother, I did not know you were coming this
way. Had I known it, I would have been careful and
not crossed your way. Please forgive me, Katey said
nearly in tears.
What is the sense of forgiving you? My prospects
of getting the job are over, Blacky said in anger.
Katey Cat
14 Champak
Whitey Rabbit also behaved in a similar manner.
One day while Whiteys children were playing on the
road Katey came there.
Whitey spotted Katey from afar. He shouted,
Children hurry, come to the house. Katey Cat is com-
ing here. Do you not know, she
knows magic? She will snatch
and take you.
Katey said to
Whitey, Whitey, I too
love children like
you. I will not harm
the children. Let
them play.
You are a cat
and that too a black
one. How can one
trust you?
Katey listened in
silence and went away
quietly with her head low-
ered.
Jumpy Monkey was young. One
day early in the morning Jumpy was trying to jump
from the guava tree to the Jamun tree, when Katey Cat
spotted him while she was driving past in the car. She
understood that Jumpy had not mastered the art of
jumping. She shouted from below, Jumpy, just be
by Rajeev Saxena
July (Second) 2011 15
careful, you can hurt yourself.
What she was afraid of happened. Jumpy fell as he
tried to jump. He was hurt and blood ran from it. He
fainted.
Katey thought, Why not run from here? But it
will not be all right to leave wounded Jumpy here like
this. After all accident can happen to anyone.
Katey quickly picked up Jumpy, put him in the car
and took him to the hospital immediately. In the
hospital he was treated at once.
Jumpy had lost a lot of blood. It was necessary to
P.S.MICHRA
give blood transfusion immediately. Doctor Dambu
Bear said to Katey, There is a big problem. The store
room is locked. It is very difficult to save Jumpy with-
out taking out the blood bottle of Monkey B 2.
Katey observed that the ventilator of the store
room was open from the top. With one leap she
reached the ventilator. The door of the store room
could be opened from inside without the help of the
key.
Katey opened the door. Doctor Dambu quickly
took out the bottle of blood from the store. Jumpy
regained consciousness as soon as he received the
blood transfusion. Katey had already informed
Jumpys father Monu Monkey.
As soon as Monu reached the hospital Katey got
ready to leave. Then Monu said, Wait sis Katey, let
me at least thank you.
Thank, for what?
You saved Jumpys life. Had you not been there
Jumpy would not have survived.
But I am black cat. Everyone despises me. As
soon as anyone sees me they meet with an accident.
This is all superstition. Being black does not
make one bad. You are in fact very good.
It was the first time that anyone had spoken to
Katey with affection. She said, Well if you think so
then I will try to be better.
After that Monu told everyone in Chandanvan
about how Jumpy was hurt, how Katey had taken him
to the hospital and arranged for the blood.
The view of the animals of Chandanvan changed.
Their hate changed to affection for Katey.

EETU BUTERFLY WAS roaming all alone in
the green forest. No one wanted to play with
her for she adopted the colour of the place
where she sat. The children called her Colour-
changer and taunted her.
by Mamta Mehta
Teetu Detective
That day too
she sat on a tree
branch and her
colour started
changing to that of
the branch. Below all
the animals were playing.
Looking at them play Teetu too
wanted to play.
She called out to them, Eh!
Listen will you all let me
play?
Chintu Rabbit looked up
when he heard this. He burst
out laughing when he saw her. Look, that
colour changer is sitting there. She wants to
play with us, but what if she changes her
colour while playing?
Everyone laughed at Chintus comment.
Chicky Squirrel said, How can we play with a
colour changer? She will change her colour every
minute. Such people are liars.
At this every one said in unison, No no we
cannot allow the colour-changer to play with us.
Then everyone started teasing Teetu Butterfly,
Changer rangier, Teetu Butterfly is a colour-
changer.
Poor Teetu flew away from there on hearing this.
She went to her room once she reached home.
When Mother Butterfly asked, she burst out
crying, Mom, no one allows me to play with them.
everyone calls me colour-changer and jeers at me.
Mom why does our colour change so often?
July (Second) 2011 19
Mother explained,
There are many beings like
us who can change the colour.
We have to change colour to
safeguard ourselves, so that
our enemies cannot recognize
us even when they look at us.
Once they understand this
they will stop mocking you
and allow you to play with
them.
Teetu was tired and soon went
off to sleep. But she resolved never
to pay heed to anyones mockery or
cry because of it.
Since some days a gang of kidnappers of children
was operating in the area. They kidnapped the chil-
dren and demanded huge ransom for their release
from the parents. All the animals were worried
about this.
Even the police was unable to find
this gang.
That day when Teetu got up
she came to know that Dimpy
Deer had been kidnapped and
the kidnappers were demand-
ing 10 lakhs as ransom.
Dimpus mother Sonu deer
was in a pitiable state crying
for her child. None were able
to comprehend what to do.
Sadly Teetu flew off from
there. The friends of Dimpy were
20 Champak
sad and worried. No one was
playing today. Teetu too went
and sat near them.
Everyone was so lost in grief
that they did not mock at Teetu.
Soon everyone went home but
Teetu remained there. After a
while some noise startled her. It
was the voice of Clever Jackal, who
stood by Peelu Wolf. He was scolding Kalu
Crow, why he had not informed about the children
play time. Kalu Crow was saying, What can I do
boss, today none of the children came to play.
Teetu was immediately all attention. She was sit-
ting on one of the leaves and her colour was just like
that of the leaf. No one could make out that she was
sitting there. Clever Jackal then turned towards Peelu
fox and asked, And where have you hidden that
Deers child?
Boss, we have hidden him in the old ruins.
All right, said Clever Jackal deep in
thought, I do not think his father will
give 10 lakhs as ransom. Do one thing,
throw him from the hills.
All right boss, said Peelu.
Then Clever Jackal spoke to
Kalu Crow, And you let us know
when the children come to play
here.
Kalu also said Yes Boss and
shook his head in agreement. Then
all of them went off from there.
Teetu was listening to everything.
July (Second) 2011 21
She went to Inspector Genda Singh and told him the
whole thing.
Inspector Genda Singh immediately ordered his
force to circle the old ruins. But Teetu stopped him
and said, Uncle do not do this, for they will be
alerted by this action. They might throw him from
the hills in confusion. Let me first find out where they
have hidden him. You hide with the police near the
hills. When I signal to you then you come there and
catch all of them.
Teetu went where Dimpy had been tied. None
could see him for she changed her colour everywhere.
Teetu inspected the whole place carefully and then
came out. Inspector Genda singh and his men were
alert. They followed Teetu and caught hold of the
rogues. Officer Jimmy pig released Dimpy and made
him sit in the jeep.
Dimpys parents and all the animals were
overjoyed to see Dimpy safe and sound.
Inspector Genda Singh praised Teetu profusely
and said that it was her ability to change colour that
had enabled them to catch hold of the notorious gang
of criminals.
Chintu Rabbit, Golu Monkey, Gabru Bear, Chicky
Squirrel, all surrounded Teetu and begged her for
forgiveness. They said, Now we will never mock you
again. We will never call you colourchanger,
because it is only due to this ability that today
Dimpys life was saved.
In this manner Teetu became the favourite friend
of all. Not only was she happy, but her parents too
were extremely glad.

A scientific research was con-
ducted on African Elephants. The
result showed that ageing does not
have any effect on the memory of
the elephant. As the elephants grow
old, they do not forget old incidents
and they use their nostalgia to find

Battu Bat was quite
worried. In between
he would mumble to
himself.
Why are you boring us in
this manner? Why do you

and Gobdu Donkey asked.
Battu shouted back, My

me again.
I can help you. Even
though the world may con-

Battu replied, Not much, he
just takes some eatables and
drinks.
When the donkey heard this
a smile lit his face. The
thief is here. You can see
how fat Motu Monkey has
become.
The moment Motu heard his
name, his face grew red with
anger. He came to the
donkey and said, I am a

The donkey kept quiet for some time. After a little
while he said, I am not joking. I have an idea. Then
he whispered something in Battus ear.
The following day all the animals saw
Battu with a heavy bag slung on
his shoulder.
Son what has happened?
Are you going
somewhere? asked
someone.
Yes, I have just
received a phone call.
My aunt who lives in
the forest nearby is
unwell. I am going to
see her. I will be back in
3-4 days for there is no one
in the house and many
eatables are there, Battu said
and flew off from there.
That night there was a lot of commotion in Battus
house.
Oh, save me. someone was heard shouting. The
animals living nearby came there. They saw Baju
Hawk coming out of Battus house with Kalu
Baby-snake clutched in his claws.
Leave me, I will never rob again, the young one of
the snake was muttering. Battu also came there. He
could not understand what was going on.
It was Kalu Baby- snake who entered your house to

Battu.
Baju explained, I kept a watch on your house ever
since Gobdhu Donkey requested me. I know this
young snake. He was putting on weight without
hunting. As soon as you left the house, the little snake
would enter your house and eat your foodstuff.
Today immediately after you locked the house and
went away, Baby-snake came to your house. But
seeing Motu Monkey and Gobdhu Donkey he ran
away. Ever since then, I have followed him. As soon
as it was dark he again came. He was about to eat food
when I caught him red-handed.
Please forgive me, now I will never rob, said Kalu
Baby snake. Battu took pity on him and let him go.
All right, promise never to rob again. Kalu promised,
and Battu let him go.
Gobdhu Donkey also also arrived there, You have
witnessed my deed. I am a donkey only by name but
I too have a brain, said Gobdhu and everyone started
laughing.

It was a holiday in Aryan and Aneeshas school
therefore both were at home creating a racket. Their
mother came and admonished them, Why are you
making such a din. As it is I am so overworked with
servant Gopal going off to his village and on top of it
your father has invited his staff members for a party.
However it was good, Raghu came along to ask
for a job otherwise how would I have managed so
much work. Now will you all let me prepare for the
party?
Aneeha quickly asked, Mom have you made some
ice-cream for the party?
Yes, both of you can eat it. But after that stop this
commotion and do your homework.
Their mother asked Raghu to serve them ice-cream.
They ate it and sat down to study.
I am not enjoying the party at all, commented
Aryan to Aneesha, Aneesha, do you recollect how
good the sketches you had made of the guest last time.
Your drawing is good. Draw a few sketches this
time.
All right, I too enjoy doing it.
Aneesha brought her sketch book, pencil, etc. and
got busy. Aryan looked at the party guests while she
drew sketches, sitting on the sofa.
Wow, what an expensive diamond necklace

Chitra Aunty has worn. Look at Mohit Uncle, Sharma
Aunty and Rajan Saheb, Papas boss. Who is that man
with the beard and mustache? Aneesha do you know
him?
Who? That man with the beard? No I do not
know him. Look how he has pounced on the food, as
if he has not eaten for many days.
Surprisingly I know all the guests except him.
However his face seems familiar.
I will make his sketch and later on inquire who he
is from father.
Aneesha quickly made his sketch. Then they both
joined the guests in the party.
Suddenly Chitra Aunty shouted, Oh! Where is my
diamond necklace? It was just now around my neck.
What should I do, my necklace has disappeared?
Oh, we will look for it just now. It may have
fallen here, Papa said. Everyone started searching for
the necklace. But they could not find it.
Papa said, Forgive me but I have to summon the
police. Please do not go out till then.
He rang and called the police. Aryan and Aneesha
too were perturbed by the theft of the necklace.
Where has the bearded stranger disappeared?
He must be around. Papa has requested everyone
to stay and not to go out.
No Aneesha he has disappeared. All the other
guests are here except him. This means he has taken
the necklace .
Aneesha, give me the sketch book quickly.
A
ryan took out the bearded mans sketch from the
sketch-book and looked at it carefully.
I do not know why but I find the face very
familiar. Where have I seen it?
Suddenly a thought occured in Aryans mind. He
took an eraser and erased the moustache and beard
from the sketch. Then he showed the sketch to
Aneesha.
Raghu! Aneesha recognized in surprise, but he
had left at 7 after taking the days pay from mom and
saying that he had to catch the train to go home.
He did not leave but changed his appearance and
came back to the party. He wore a suit, fixed a beard
and moustache, then mingled with the crowd. Our
parents were busy concentrating on the party.
Finding an opportunity he took the necklace and
July (Second) 2011 29
went away. We have to get him arrested
immediately.
Aryan narrated everything to Inspector Sharma,
who was present at the party. Sharma at once rang the
police at the railway station from his mobile, gave
Raghus description and alerted them.
Within a short while news of Raghus arrest was
heard. In the search conducted the necklace was
found.
Raghu admitted that he had committed many
thefts by posing as a household help. But he had never
been caught. The police was sure that they would be
unraveling many thefts with the arrest of Raghu.
Chitra Aunty was impressed by Aryans and
Aneeshas investigation. Their parents too were
proud of them.

OW THE GERMAN army will reach our
village in two weeks, one day an old
man told the villagers. He had come to
know of this from somewhere.
Jacob, Yahoba and other villagers were worried.
They did not have any arms, to fight the German
army.
In 1940, Dictator Hitler of Germany, an European
country, had started conquering the whole of Europe

under him. By 1945 Hitler had started losing control
but his army tried to capture new countries in order to
boost their failing courage.
According to news, two big German tanks were
coming. Some of the villagers trembled in fear.
Friends, first of all we should stop these tanks from
entering the village, brave Jacob explained to them.
But how will we stop the tanks? inquired a
young man.
July (Second) 2011 37
By digging trenches, Yahoba promptly replied .
Wow! What a good plan. We can stop the
German tanks easily in this manner, uttered a man
standing close to him.
No. No, the German tanks cannot be stopped by
small trenches and they have a small army with them.
We have to plan something else, Jacob said in a wor-
ried tone.
But we have no option except to dig the trenches,
for we do not have arms and ammunition to fight,
retorted Yahoba.

We have to use our brain, Jacob explained.
Then you think of a way, said Yahoba.
I have a plan. We will defeat them with our
brains, replied Jacob.
Then Jacob explained his scheme to all the vil-
lagers. Everyone started making the Russian flag.
They made 150 flags with cloth and bamboo.
Now we should place the flags in such a manner
that the soldiers are misguided, said Jacob.
A group of children and youngsters went off on
cycles. They fixed the flags at an interval of 100 metres.
In this manner a strip of more than 10 kilometres
was covered. This road led to the desert which was
further away from the village.
A
fter a few days a small section of the army with 2
tanks came and settled at some distance from the
village.
Look at the Russian flag, there must be a village
ahead, said the soldier a top one of the tanks.
Come let us go in that direction, said the other
soldier.
The German soldiers were misled by the flags.
They rolled on the flags one by one with their tanks as
they proceeded towards the desert which was in the
wrong direction.
The villagers took a sigh of relief. Everyone
praised Jacob.
After two days American and Russian fighter
planes reached the desert pursuing the German tanks
and destroyed them.
In this way Jacob the Jew boy was able to save his
village from the powerful German army.

Now let me enjoy a cold drink sitting under the
fan, muttered Bhola, troubled with the sweltering
heat. He took a glass of cold drink and sat near the
window.
Oh, I forgot to put ice in my glass, thought
Bhola, as he went to fetch some ice from the other
room leaving the glass on the table near the window.
After sometime when he came back he found the
glass empty.
It seems I drank the cold drink. How forgetful I
have become, Bhola muttered as he struck his head
with his hand and became busy in some other work.
Next day when Bhola left the glass of buttermilk
on the table, he found it empty. On the third day
when he found that the jug of orange juice was empty,
he suspected someone had taken the juice.
When Bhola went out of his house in search of the
thief, he found Happy Elephant walking away
from his house.
Happy did you drink the juice?
Yes, I enjoyed the juice.
Happy, are you not ashamed of
yourself? First of all you drink my
orange juice, then you laugh and say
you have enjoyed it, Bhola yelled.
Which orange juice? I drank
some pomegranate juice from the
Thief of the Locked
Window

bazaar, said Happy waving his trunk.
Then who has taken my orange juice? Bhola
muttered surprised.
I do not know, said Happy and went away.
Worried, Bhola looked around. He spotted Beeju
Tomcat.
Beeju did you drink my orange juice? Bhola
asked.
Now that is odd. I have not been near your house
so how can I drink your orange juice. I think this is
the work of some ghost or spirit, that was thirsty and
drank your juice, Beeju said making
fun of Bhola and went away.
I am worried and Beeju is joking.
When there are no ghosts or spirits
then how can they drink my orange
juice? Definitely someone has
entered from the
small hole,
because the rest
of the window
is covered
RAMENDRA NATH
with a strong mesh, said Bhola and started looking at
the hole in the mesh. He could not understand how
anyone could come in through such a small hole.
Gangu Donkey who was passing by saw Bhola gazing
at the window and stopped.
Bhola, why are you gazing at the window?
Gangu, I am not looking at the window but at the
small hole in it and thinking how one can go in
through it.
You will go in through this small hole? Bhola, I
eat grass but it seems your mind has gone to eat grass.
You cannot enter through this small hole. In fact no
one can go in through this hole.
Then where did my Juice go, that was lying on the
table? said Bhola and then told him everything.
I
think you yourself had gulped down the juice
and forgotten about it. Then you thought
someone has finished your juice.
Surprising! Have I really become so forgetful?
May be, Gangu laughed and walked away.
Bohla too went inside the house scratching his head.
That evening Bhola had just made some cold drink
and kept it on the table when the phone rang from the
other room. He went to receive the call.
As soon as Bhola went from the room a straw came
from the hole in the mesh and reached the glass.
Gradually the contents of the glass started
disappearing.
After sometime someone yelled from outside, Oh
God, from where has this red chilly drink come.
Bhola ran out of the house when he heard this. He
went to the back of the house where the window was
July (Second) 2011 49
situated. Gangu and Bantu Monkey were already
there.
Bantu was shouting for water.
Come Bhola, this was Bantus mischief. He used
to drink your juice and cold drink from the straw
passed through the hole in the mesh, said Gangu.
But why did Bantu do this?
Actually I wanted to play a prank on you, so that
you would wonder where your juice and cold drink
disappeared every day, said Bantu.
But my plan backfired your prank, Gangu
laughed and said.
I am unable to understand one thing. When I
overheard the conversation that took place between
you and Bohla, you did not say anything about a
plan, Bantu said astonished.
G
angu explained, When I came to know from
Bhola that the cold drinks kept near the window
disappeared I understood that it could be done only
by someone living somewhere close, who would
drink anything kept on the table whenever he got a
chance.
Gangu did not tell me his plan at that time fearing
that the thief would cometo know it for he lived
nearby. He rang me later and explained the plan in
detail. Therefore today instead of the juice I mixed
chili powder in water and kept it, Bhola completed.
I did not know my mischief will back fire and I
would have to drink a mixture of water and chillis.
Please forgive me and give me some water to drink,
Bantu said. Bhola gave him sweet buttermilk to calm
the burning sensation.

NE DAY, AS was his
habit, Charlie Ape
was busy reading in
the class. At that moment
Beenu Jackal came up to him.
Charlie Ape inquired, Beenu,
why have you come? Do you
want to seek admission for
your child?
NNo, I am looking for a
job. I will be grateful if I can
work here, said Beenu Jackal with folded hands.
All right, there is a vacancy of a peon in the
school. If you like you can work, said Charlie Ape
nodding his head.
Thank you very much. I will start coming to the
school from tomorrow, Beenu Jackal said happily.
Early next morning he reached there before the
school time and started working with whole
heartedly. Charlie Ape was very happy to see him
working so hard.
Beenu worked for the whole month with great
diligence. As soon as he got the salary he started
spending on his various expensive hobbies. He spent
his entire salary in a short time and then sat empty
handed.
Gradually many months passed. One day Beenu
Jackal muttered to himself, My salary is over within
15 days. I do not know how to earn enough money
that would last the whole month? On top of that this
Charlie Ape is not willing to increase my salary.
He thought, This will not work. I will have to rob

in the school in order to meet my expenses. I have
already accomplished small thefts. I will do this in
such a manner that no one will suspect me.
After this, Beenu started pilfering in the school.
Sometimes he would pick the pencil box of a child
while at other times a tiffin box. He would then sell
the pilfered article in the market and take care of his
expenses.
July (Second) 2011 59
There was
a big commo-
tion because of
the sudden
increase in thefts.
The children were
constantly worried
about their bags.
Nobody sus-
pected Beenu
Jackal. Since no
one suspected Beenu
therefore he thought of
robbing something big.
One day he robbed the
cycle of Jaffry Deer and hid it in the caves far away
and quickly resumed work on his return.
When the school got over Jaffry did not find his
cycle in the parking area. His heart skipped a beat.
He looked for it everywhere but could not find it.
Then he sat down and cried his heart out. Charlie
Ape came there and inquired, Jaffry, why are you
sitting here and crying? Did anyone fight with you?
No Sir, my cycle has been stolen. My father had
bought this cycle with great difficulty. If I do not find
it my father will thrash me mercilessly, he said and
cried afresh.
Again a robbery. I cannot understand who has
the courage to rob during the day. I will have to do
something. Jaffry, you go home. Tomorrow, I will
buy you a new cycle. Then your father will not
beat you, said Charlie Ape and his face grew
P.S.MICHRA

red with anger.
When Jaffry heard this, he wiped his tears and
started for home.
Charlie Ape called Beenu Jackal to his office and
asked him angrily, Beenu, it seems you are not taking
interest in your work. Robberies are taking place in
the school . every day and you are doing nothing
about it. Why do you not catch the thieves.
How can I catch them? I do not know who is
robbing? said Beenu Jackal uncomfortably.
Charlie Ape was contemplating how to catch the
thief when his friend Inspector Cheeku came to his
house.
As soon as he arrived the inspector
said, Charlie, why is your face so
downcast? Tell me what is
troubling you? Maybe I can
help you.
Yes, yes why not. It
is only you who can
help me. Listen.
And Charlie Ape
narrated the whole
thing.
I n s p e c t o r
Cheeku heard
the whole
story, took a
deep breath
and then said,
Hmm so
this is the
July (Second) 2011 61
problem. Charlie , do you
suspect anyone?
In the school there are
only children except me. And
children are clean at heart.
Therefore one cannot suspect
them.
Yes, one can suspect Beenu
Jackal, the school peon, who joined
the school a few months ago. Moreover his behaviour
is not good these days. He is absconding during
work, replied Charlie Ape.
Charlie, install an electronic device to warn
against thieves in the cycle that you are giving to
Jaffry Deer. Then you park it in the parking lot and
wait for the thief.
The moment the thief lays his hand on the cycle,
it will itself help in catching the thief, Inspector
Cheeku showed a way to catch the thief.
Wow! What a good idea. I will immediately go
and buy a new cycle and fix an electronic devise. I am
sure the thief will definitely be caught, said Charlie
Ape, jumping with joy.
Next day Charlie went to the market, bought a
cycle and got an electronic device fixed on it in order
to catch the thief. Then he rode the new cycle to
school and parked it in the parking lot. In the school
Jaffry Deer was the only one who came to school on
the cycle. Therefore there were no other cycles on the
grounds.
Beenu Jackal saw the new cycle and his eyes shone
brightly. He thought he would be able to get a lot of
62 Champak
money by selling the new cycle. He therefore resolved
to steal the new cycle.
At 10 in the morning when all the children were
studying in the class, Beenu Jackal went to the
grounds as soon as he got the opportunity. He looked
around; when he did not see anyone he stretched his
hands to take hold of the cycle. As soon as he touched
it the electronic devise started sounding,
Thiefthief catchcatchthiefthief
No sooner did Charlie hear it he ran to the grounds
with the children at his heels. There they saw the
cycle in Beenu Jackals hand who was trying his best
to stop the sound coming from the device.
Charlie Ape shouted when he saw this, So you are
the thief. I have made a big mistake giving you the
job.
II am not a thief. I was just looking at the
cycle, said Beenu Jackal in fear.
Keep quiet. You have been caught red-handed.
Now come out with the truth of the earlier robberies,
otherwise said Charlie Ape as he lifted his stick
threateningly.
Beenu Jackal took fright when he saw the red eyes
of Charlie Ape and the heavy stick in his hand. He
knew his secret was out. Therefore he admitted to his
crime, inorder to save himself.
Then Charlie called Inspector Cheeku and sent
Beenu Jackal to the prison.
As soon as Beenu Jackal was sent to the prison, all
the thefts stopped. The children stopped worrying
about their goods and concentrated on their studies.

T WAS SPRING season. Champakvan looked
green and colourful with green grass, plants and
flowers everywhere. The whole forest smelled
sweet with fragrant flowers. The weather was cloudy
but pleasant. The trees and plants swayed gently in
the breeze. Birds and animals danced in joy.
Peehu Peacock was dancing gracefully along with
Keeshu Peahen near the fresh water lake and was
enjoying the rainy weather. Just then they saw a flock
of cranes passing through Champakvan. They were
heading towards their neighbouring forest
Nandanvan. Of the flock, 2 cranes flew down and
perched on a tree near the lake.
Peehu went near them and asked, What is your
name?
One of the cranes replied, Im Shwet and this is
my friend Shweta and what is yours?
My name is Peehu and this is my friend Keeshu,
introduced Peehu and asked, Where are you coming
from?
Shwet said, We live on the other side of this for-
est. Due to heat, the rivers and lakes have dried up and
now we are migrating to Nandanvan.
Peehu said, You may stay here at Champakvan
with us. This fresh water lake never dries up.
Shwet said, Thank you friend. I will have to ask
my companions who have already flown to
Nandanvan. I cannot stay here alone.
Just then Keeshu Peahen came there and com-
mented, You have tiny feath-
ers. Look, we have long beau-
tiful feathers.
Shwet replied, Hey,
your feathers are long
SUSHIL
and beautiful but can you fly high like us? Nature has
bestowed everyone with a unique quality and charac-
ter.
While they were talking, Cheeku Rabbit came
there and joined them in the conversation. Cheeku
said, Very true. Each one of us has a special charac-
teristic feature and we should not be proud about it.
Beauty lies in our actions not in our physical appre-
ance.
Keeshu felt sorry for her comment. She requested
Shwet to forget and forgive her for her hurting words.
Shwet said, Keeshu, you are very young. I did not
take your comment seriously.
It started raining. Everybody danced around in the
rain. Cheeku had a bag full of sweets and he distrib-
uted them to all his friends. They all enjoyed together
for a long time. When the rain stopped, Shwet and
Shweta got ready to move and said goodbye.
C
heeku said, Friend, go and tell your companions
and bring them all here. We can live together at
Champakvan. Look, there are lot of trees and fresh
water lake for you to live comfortably.
Shwet said, Thanks a lot for your kind words. I
will surely tell my companions and bring them all
here soon.
Shwet and Shweta went to Nandanvan. They met
their friends and narrated their experience and
Champakvan and they were all excited. All the cranes
decided to go to Champakvan.
When they reached Champakvan, Cheeku was
there with his friends to greet them and they all lived
together happily.

An Adamant Lock
C
HAMPU MONKEY and his family went on a
pleasure trip. They locked their house to
secure it as they would be away for a long time.
After several days, the lock that was securing the
door was bored. He said, I cannot hand here any
longer. I want to go for a stroll.
The door immediately replied, Hey, you cannot
do that. You are meant to stay here and secure the
house from thieves.
The window also said, Yeah, the door is right. You
cannot leave this place.
But a thief can enter into the house from
anywhere. He can break the door, he can break the
window and even me to enter the house. So it would
not make any difference if I leave this place.
Do you mean to say that all the people who lock
their homes are crazy? Try to understand. It is risky to
leave the door unlocked.
But the lock was not ready to listen to their words.
Despite their best efforts to convince, the lock
detached himself from the door and went out for a
walk. The door sealed tightly and stayed in fright. The
window also closed tightly and waited impatiently for
the lock to return.
On the other hand, the lock was enjoying his
outing. He was excited to see a lot of new things
around. He thought, They are fools. They do not
know to enjoy life and were trying to spoil my plan
too.
On the way, the lock met Chinku Squirrel. Chinku
was Champus good friend. When the lock went near
Chinku, he said, Hey Chinku, how are you?
July (Second) 2011 69
Chinku was surprised to see the lock there. She
was silent for a while and replied, Hey, you are
Champus lock, right? What are you doing here? You
are supposed to secure his home.
Ah! The door and the window are securing the
house. You dont have to worry about that.
But they will not be able to secure the house
alone. You return home just now, said Chinku.
The lock did not listen again and walked deep into
the forest. He was just not bothered about the house
and its safety. He enjoyed his day out in the forest. It
was soon dark and the forest was looking scary in the
night.
At Champus home, the door and window were
trembling in fear and held together
tightly. Just then, they saw 2 people
RAMENDRA NATH
walking that way. The window whispered and told
the door, Our fear is coming true. They are thieves.
Lock has not returned yet.
The 2 strangers were actually thieves. They were
glad to see Champus house shut without a lock and
they easily opened the door and entered the house.
They collected all the valuables from Champus house
and put them in a big bag. After sometime, they
carried the bag loaded with money and other
valuables and went away happily.
After some time, the lock returned leisurely. The
door and the window narrated the whole incident.
Look, what had happened. We told you not to leave
the house but see thieves have stolen everything from
the house. What will Champu do now? If you had
remained on the door, the thieves would not have
entered the house.
T
he lock realized his mistake. He could do nothing but
feel bad. He pleaded sorry but that did not help. Im
really sorry. I will not do this mistake again.
The window said, Oh! You have understood your
mistake. Now we cannot do anything as the thieves
have taken away all the things from home.
The lock went back and latched on the door.
Champu returned from his trip and was shocked to
see that the house was robbed. He registered a
complaint with the police. But nothing happened for a
long time. Finally, the police caught the thieves and
returned the things to Champu that were stolen from
his house. The lock was happy and relieved. He
promised not to do that mistake again.

Suddenly she saw a bright object from the win-
dow. She went out to the garden to look at it. It had
alighted in the garden. She saw that it was a space
ship.
At that moment the door of the spaceship opened
and a unique creature stepped out of it. The creature
had on a gas mask and on his suit was written Jovian.
It looked just like a child but spoke like a grown up.

He inquired, Little doll, today is your birthday?
Yes, answered Pinky. But she was surprised
how he came to know that today was her birthday.
Jovian said to Pinky, Come with me. I will take
you to my planet Jupiter, where you can celebrate
your birthday once in every 12 years.
How come? Pinky retorted in surprise.
Because our planet completes one full circle
round the sun in 12 years. Therefore a person who is
12 years old on earth is actually of one year on our
planet, replied Jovian.
First tell me why are you wearing this mask?
KHALIL-AFTAB
74 Champak
asked Pinky.
Oh, I am wearing this because we cannot breathe
oxygen gas like the earth beings. We require other
chemical gases like methane, ammonia, helium,
hydrogen, etc. Our atmosphere is composed of a mix-
ture of all these gasses, Jovian explained in detail.
All right that is fine. But bring a similar mask for
me so that I can accompany you to the space, said
Pinky.
Soon Pinky was far out in the space. No sooner the
spaceship was over Jupiter, then Pinky was surprised
to see the colourful clouds.
Before entering the spaceship Jovian gave Pinky a
warm and heavy suit to wear. The temperature out-
side was 10 degrees Celsius. He informed that the
weather outside was cold.
Pinky asked, Why is it so?
Jovian said, We get only 1/25 th part of the suns
rays, which reach the earth.
T
hen Jovian warned her, You will have to tie these
gas balloons, so that you do not fall. Jupiters
gravity is two and half times stronger than that of the
earth.
When Pinky came out of the spaceship she found
Jovian to be like a small child who was walking leav-
ing balloons.
At night 17 moons were visible in the sky. On see-
ing them Pinky remembered the story of Moon Uncle
that her Nani Granny used to tell her.
The sight of the moon reminded Pinky of her
birthday cake and she felt extremely hungry.
July (Second) 2011 75
I would like to eat some food, Pinky requested
Jovian.
Jovian went inside the space ship and brought a
bottle and some pills, These are pills for your vita-
mins, carbohydrate and fat. We eat these to live,
showed off Jovian. We do not grow vegetables or
bread. The atmosphere here is not conducive for this
and then he laughed loudly.
Pinky was frightened when she heard this. She
quietly took the pills. Her eyes filled with tears. Now
she missed her parents.
She thought, What kind of life this is, where one
has to survive on pills. Always wear warm spacesuit
and at the same time put on the gas mask.
Then Pinky said, Mr. Jovian, I think we should go
back to earth.
We have just spent two hours here. Our next
flight to earth will be only tomorrow, Jovian said.
P
inky quickly calculated and said, when Jupiter s
one year is equal to earths 12 years then its one
day is equivalent to 12 days of the earth. She did not
want to stay there any longer. But she had no option.
Suddenly Jovians antennas on his headgear
received a signal that his planet was going to attack
Shoemaker Levy comet, therefore he would have to
leave this planet quickly.
Pinky took a sigh of relief that the space ship was
returning to earth.
But Pinky was afraid that she would be late for her
birthday party.
Pinky, come soon, all the guests have arrived,
76 Champak
she heard her mothers voice. She heard her mother
call and got up flustered, and said, Am I late?
No, you are not late. You were again in your
dream world, her mom said laughing.
When Pinky was about to blow the candles on the
cake, she found one missing.
Where is the candle? she shouted.
Her elder brother Mimi was standing behind her
hiding the candle. He said, I thought you will be
happy to know that you are one year younger.
Pinky happily replied, I am very happy after the
ride to Jupiter and I have grown.
Everyone was happy that there was a change in her
thinking.
But only Pinky knew that the change had come
because of her ride to Jupiter.

A
RACE WAS going on among Jumbo Elephant
and his friends In Champakvan School , dur-
ing P.T. period. Suddenly Teena Deer shout-
ed, Look at fatso, how forcefully he is running. He is
still unable to run fast. HaHa.
Everyone laughed. Jumbo became conscious. He
stood fourth.
When he was relaxing under the tree other friends

teased him again, Poor Motu, he cannot run due to
his obesity.
Jumbo was not fat but in comparison to his friend
he was heavy.
The bell for lunch break rang. All the students ran
to their respective classes. They brought out their
lunch boxes and came to the tree. But Jumbo did not
go there. He knew like always someone must have
taken away his lunch box.
He was just thinking this when Teena again teased
him, Motu, your noodles were really very tasty.
When Jumbo came home he told his mother, I
will not eat food.
Why? What happened? mummy asked.
I am not hungry. You gave too many noodles in
the tiffin.
Noodles? But I kept sandwiches, mummy said
surprised.
Jumbo was surprised too. After listening to
everything his mom laughed and said, They just
tease without meaning it. You are not fat but stronger
than them. Do not pay attention to their teasing.
Jumbo was furious at Teena. He resolved never to
speak to Teena.
One day all the students went for a picnic to an old
fort outside Champakvan. All his friends went to
explore the different rooms of the fort.
Jumbo stood quietly. Suddenly a painful shriek
broke the silence. Jumbo carefully moved towards it.
He saw Teena squirming on the floor of a room. A

portion of the fort had suddenly slipped suddenly.
Here Teena was pinned down under a wooden pillar
and some bricks. Jumbo went near Teena and
removed the bricks.
Are you all right?
Yes, but I am unable to lift one of my legs.
Teena said groaning in pain.
Do not worry. The wooden pillar did not fall on
your leg because of the bricks lying there. Your leg is
just stuck, Jumbo consoled her.
Then he tried to lift the pillar but it did not move
at all.
Oh it is very heavy, Jumbo said taking a deep
breath.
He again tried. Teena quickly removed her leg
from under the pillar.
Come let us go, Jumbo said. Leaning on Jumbo
Teena managed to somehow came out.
B
y then the other friends too came out of the fort.
Teena sat on one of the stones there and told
everyone of Jumbos courage.
But why did you pick up the pillar all by yourself.
You could have called us, Neetu inquired.
The rubble was falling there. I did not want to
endanger all of you. Therefore.
You saved me. Jumbo, please forgive me. I have
always teased you. From today you are not Motu but
our loving Jumbo. Sturdy, lovable and strong, friend
Jumbo.
Teena had understood, it was not good to make
fun of anyone because of the shape and size of
their body.
