Use the Internet to determine the purpose/uses of FTP and Telnet.

Write a short paragraph

explain the purpose, pros, and cons of each application.
File transfer protocol is a standard protocol used to transfer data or files from one computer to
the other over a TCP based network. For the transfer of files an FTP server and an FTP client are
required. You can know whether you have FTP client or not by simply typing FTP on the
command prompt.
Telnet is also a protocol of a TCP/IP network which is used to access remote computers. Telnet
program runs on your computer and connect you to a server on the network. Then by entering
different commands you can control the server and communicate with different servers on the
same network.
FTP is more concerned with the transfer of file along with some additional privileges of creating
and deleting directories. Telnet on the other hand has a greater control over the network. Once
a connection is established, the user can issue commands to the server and study the response.
FTP is widely used for file transfer as it is a simple and easy protocol to transfer files to the web
server. Use of Telnet has been reduced after the introduction of SSH and it is mainly used as a
diagnostic tool now-a-days.

What is SSH?
SSH stands for Secure Shell. It was developed by SSH Communications Security Ltd. SSH is a
cryptographic protocol used for secure data transfer, remote command execution and log in
and other secure network services between two computers on the same network.

Why is it always better to SSH rather than telnet to access remote devices?
Both SSH and telnet are used to connect to a remote server to facilitate some sort of communication but
the most prominent difference between the two is security measures. Telnet has no security mechanism
whatsoever. While SSH is a cryptographic protocol and provides great security when accessing a remote
device as it protects the user from any malicious intent on the network. SSH has replaced Telnet in great
majority and telnet is mostly used now a days for debugging and testing purposes.
