Vacuum Casting Pressure Casting

Vacuum casting and pressure casting are two types of permanent die casting processes that differ in how molten metal fills the mold cavity. In vacuum casting, a partial vacuum is used to draw molten metal from an induction furnace into the mold by reducing the air pressure. In pressure casting, pressurized gas forces molten metal upward and into the mold cavity where it solidifies under continued pressure until fully solidified.

CHAPTER 4

a) Contrast the process flow of vacuum casting and pressure casting in permanent die
casting process.
answer

Vacuum casting

Pressure Casting

Mold is immersed partially into molten metal

held in induction furnace-metal melted in air
or vacuum

Molten metal flows into mold cavity by

gravity

Vacuum reduces air pressure inside mold to

2/3 atm pressure

Molten metal is forced upward by gas

pressure into metal mold

The molten metal is drawn into mold cavities

through gate in bottom of mold

Pressure maintained until metal has

completely solidified

After mold filled, it is withdrawn from molten Molten metal may also forced upward by
metal
