Picking Leaves and Tree Bark

The document describes collecting materials and constructing the main structure for an art installation. The author picked banana tree leaves and tree bark, which they placed in plastic bags. They also decided the form of branches for the installation and constructed them by inserting fiber optics and copper wires. The main trunk structure was built by attaching leatheroid circles inside to hold various electronics like an Arduino, breadboard, sensors and microphones. Velcro was used to allow opening the structure for checking after decoration.

Picking Leaves and Tree bark

I found that the dried leaves of banana tree are such a good material that their
sizes are large and their texture is as similar as a trunk of tree. I picked many
of them in village.
After ripping the leaves from branches, I put them into a plastic bag.

I also picked up some tree barks from the ground.

These two bags will be used later.

Making the final branches

In February, I had deiced the form of the branches of the
installation. Now I started to make the final branches.
I turned the role of fibre-optical from willow leaves to aerial roots.
And that would be better for audiences to know its color changing
while come closer to the tree hole.
I horizontally cut many small scars on the plastic tree branches. The
fibre-optical would extend through the scars.
A copper wire would also reach out to connect the copper wires on
the glass bottles.
Then, I took apart the adhesive papers which were used to fix the
shape, put the fibre-optical and conductive copper wires into the
branches, and folded the triangles again.
I fixed the form of all branches and stuck the dried leaves on the
branches by glass glue. I was waiting the solidification of the glue. I
will follow up them tomorrow.

Establishing the structure inside the trunk

I painted one side of two leatheroid circles(Circle3 & Circle4) black.
They are the parts of tree hole so that audiences could only see the
darkness although they come close to the tree hole.
On the leatheroid circles, there were different holes which were used
to place different materials:

I bent the plastic cushion and stuck the leatheroid circles on it by

hot-melt adhesive.

The small plastic cushion, which was used to fix the ultrasound
sensor and microphone, was placed and stuck between Circle3 and
Circle4.
Since the Arduino and breadboard would be placed on the Circle3, I
cut two straight parallel lines under Circle4 so that the two sides of a
rectangle cushion could be fixed inside the pillar through the two
cuts. That helped to support the weight of both electric materials.
All the fixing was made by hot-melt adhesive.

Since the installation is running by programming, I must ensure that

I could conveniently check the Arduino and wires inside the
installation.
Therefore, I did not absolutely stick the two sides of the plastic
cushion.
I stuck some velcros on its two sides so that I could open the
installation after final decoration.

The building of main structure of the trunk was completed.

I will decorate it later.
