Aural Training Lesson

My Students are 12th Grade in my Advance Placement Music Theory


Course. Enrolled in the schools Advance Placement Academy Program.
Have all taken and passed the prerequisite course Fundamentals of
Music Theory. All the students have been enrolled and participating in
either Band, Choir, and/or Orchestra for more than 2 years. Class
received a grant that provided each of the students enrolled in my
Advance Placement Music Theory class a personal iPads and laptops
that allow them each individual access to the software SmartMusic,
and to be able to answer questions presented on the promethean board
in the front. School also has access to many instruments from all over
the world since its a performing arts school.

Carefully review the lesson plan. Identify the objectives. If the lesson plan has
learning objectives that do NOT meet the ABCD criteria, rewrite them. You
should have at least 3 learning objectives that meet the ABCD formula.

A=Audience; B=Behavior; C=Condition and D=Degree.

12th grade AP Music Theory students will identify aurally pitch and
rhythm errors in music from given aural examples, getting at least 3 out
of 4 errors in music per example.
12th grade AP Music theory students will be able to notate melodies from
dictations, with at least jotting the soprano and bass lines per recording.
12th grade AP Music Theory students will discern the different types of
nonharmonic tones, labeling at least 60% of the nonharmonic tones in a
given aural excerpt.

How are the materials used?

Laptops that have access to the software SmartMusic.


IPads compatible to question answer system with classroom
promethean board.
Print outs of varied music excerpts, and staffs to dictate music.
Recordings of varied excerpts.
Class promethean board
PowerPoint with assignment(s) instructions.

PowerPoint contains the class notes and assignment instructions to


present in a more interactive and attention catching manner to increase
retention of the concepts of the lesson to the students.
Promethean board will be used to present PowerPoint and used with
compatible iPads for practice with students before letting them get into
the assignment and practicing individually.
Print outs and recordings of excerpts are part of the assignments where
the students will hear the recording(s) played 3 times and will identify
any errors the music has compared to the recording(s) they just heard.
Recordings will also contain music that will be needed to dictate on staff
paper and compositions where nonharmonic tones will need to be
identified and labeled.
Laptops with the software SmartMusic will be used to practice the
concepts individually on the computer and with varied examples ranging
from easy to harder examples for further practice and practice

R = Require Learner Participation


Explain what the students are doing. How will they use technology in this
lesson?

Students will take notes based on the lecture prepared in the


PowerPoint. From there the students will have examples on the topic
covered in the lecture where some are strictly for the instructor to model
and some are geared to have the students participate and use the
information learned to solve. Students will then take the worksheet
provided and will begin the classwork. Instructor will set the recording up
and will tell the students to read the instructions once all the students
have their heads up after reading the instructions the instructor will press
play and the recordings will start to play that coincide with the
assignment given. In section 1 Students are to listen to recordings and
looking at the excerpts provided (the assignment sheet) will hear the
music played and will try to find the problems such as pitch and rhythmic
errors on the music provided compared to what was heard. The
recording will play each excerpt for this section twice and their will be a
30 second gap in-between each replay Then the recording will read the
instructions for section 2. In section 2 students will listen to the provided
music and will dictate the soprano and bass lines from the recording.
This recording will be played over 4 times with a 1 minute gap inbetween each playback. Lastly will be section 3. The students for section
3 will be provided an excerpt of a piano composition, they will hear the
composition and will identify and label all nonharmonic tones on the
music by circling and labeling on the side margins based on what they
hear. The expert will be played 3 times and is about 5 minutes long with
a 30 second gap in-between replays. After 30 seconds of the last playing
of the piano composition the recording will state the students to put their
pencils/pens down and to stop writing and stop working. The instructor
will then collect the assignments. Then the students should have
approximately 15 to 20 minutes left in class. They are allowed to relax
and convers about the lesson and such or just talk amongst each other
or can practice the skills they learned in the lesson by going to the
furthering skills section on the Student activities page. They can click on
the link to musictheory.net and can practice all the ear training skills and
aural skills covered in the lesson.

E = Evaluate and Revise


How do you assess student learning?

Students comprehension will be assessed by during the note taking


portion of the PowerPoint their will be moments to ask the students for
any questions they may have and to ask for their comprehension so far
by the 5- finger class rule. 1 finger- student is completely lost. 2 fingersstudents is understanding a portion but is still puzzled by some of the
information. 3 fingers- student understand the concepts of the lesson but
is not able to apply them to other means besides the notes. 4 fingersstudent understand the lesson and can apply it to assignments. 5
fingers- student fully understand the lesson and is confident enough to
teach it to others.
Students will be assessed by the results from the assignment
completed and collected the day of the lesson. The assignment will be

graded and will follow the AP grading format and based on scores the
instructor (myself) will be able to better understand what concepts in the
lesson to breakdown further or what to have more examples of and just
research other ways to help the students understand the concepts to be
the most successful they can be.

Each time you use a lesson with your students, it's an excellent idea to write
yourself notes, so that you can revise the lesson if needed. For this assignment
because you haven't actually taught the lesson, you do not need to add anything
about revision.
