also feel that the studies I was able to find didnt offer me any new insight.
Perhaps that is the fault in choosing a subject of which I had already
scratched the surface. The revisions I made for the final draft were
minimal. I included subject headings and edited the paragraph on social
media users to be more on point. I can honestly say that I am pleased with
the final draft of my issue summary and consider it to be a solid example of
my writing capabilities.
The writing process for the blog post was drastically different from
the issue summary. I was wrapped up in finals for other classes and did not
focus on the piece as much as I should have. Following the assignment
guidelines, I wrote from the point of view of an annoyed secular media user.
I later went back and revised some of the content that I felt was a little too
inflammatory and controversial and scaled the tone way back. Because I
wrote this piece rather quickly under the impression of a social media user,
I did not use any citations. Viewing a couple of blog posts from my peers
inspired me to really consider the layout of my final draft. I researched
some blog layouts on Google images and created a mock page that would be
found on a blog site.
The rhetorical goal of the issue summary was to inform and inspire
reflection on the powerful role of the media in shaping our worldview. The
paper did not seek to persuade the opinion of the reader about
fundamentalism as a stand-alone concept. It was written in an academic
tone for an academic audience and focused on an appeal to ethos.
My intention for the blog post was to reach secular social media users
by catching their attention with agreeable content and an appeal to pathos.
Next, I went about informing my readers about the anthropological,
psychological, and sociological implications of rigid belief with appeals to
logos and ethos. At the end, I returned to the pathos appeal and their sense
of humanity with a plea for tolerance and leading by example.
In all, this class helped to expand my horizons as a writer. The
research assignments, especially, helped me to organize my ideas and make
my paper more streamlined. All of the peer reviews and revisions taught
me how to scrutinize my work, what to look for, and how to improve my final
draft. I am usually uncomfortable sharing my work with others, but I will
use this strategy in my personal writings so I can continue to grow as a
writer.
