Lesson Cycle
Lesson Title/Topic: Water Cycle Dance Off
Target Concept: To help students distinguish between the four stages, they will be asked to participate
in a water cycle dance. It will aid the students in remembering what happens during each stage of the
water cycle.

Standards/Rationale: 112.13. Science, Grade 2, 8 (C) explore the processes in the water cycle,
including evaporation, condensation, and precipitation

Lesson Objectives: To use body motions

to link to definitions of each stage in the
water cycle.

Assessment: Students will be in groups of

3 to 4 students to create a song or rap about
the water cycle and will perform it in front
of the class. Individually the students will
write out two complete sentences briefly
explaining each stage in the water cycle.

Materials:
-Prezi
-Science Textbooks
Lesson Cycle: (Direct instruction)

The teacher will:

Focus/Mental Set: Start with a question:
Today we are talking about the water
cycle. The water cycle is the earths natural
way of recycling and filtering water.
Who likes to go play at water parks?....
Did you know that the water that we play
in, is the same water that the dinosaurs
played in when they were around long long
ago before you were even born?...
This is made possible by the water cycle!!
Now on Prezi (slides are in order):
-show picture of the water cycle and
expose kids to the four terms Evaporation,
Precipitation, Condensation, and run off.
-Play about a minute of the video for kids
to get an idea of why this is a dance off!
-while the video is playing, teacher does
the dance moves.

The student will:

-Listen actively and quietly as the teacher
grabs to students attention with the
relevance of the water cycle.
-Student will be exposed to the four steps
in the water cycle while looking a picture
helping the student visualize the process.
-Student will be exposed to a video where
the dance moves are that we will learn.

Teacher Input:
Go to the next slide on Prezi which
explains the first stage: Evaporation.
Explain evaporation and pair it with its
dance move. (Flutter you fingers and bring
your arms up)
Next slide: quick look at a picture of
evaporation
Next slide: Explain Condensation and pair
it with its dance move. (Cross your arms
like youre cold)
Next slide: Explain Precipitation and pair it
with its dance move. (Flutter your fingers
and bring your arms down)
Next slide: quick look at a picture of
precipitation.
Next slide: Explain Run off and pair it with
its dance move. (Basically whatever you
want to do, but make sure the move sloped
downward)
Next slide: quick look at a picture of the
whole water cycle again.
Next slide: Watch the video while asking
all students to partake in dancing-its a
dance off after all!

-The students will actively listen to the

explanation of each stage and will stand up
when asked to practice the dance move.
-allowing the students to get up and move
will help them stay focused and have fun
learning
-When video plays all of the students will
be asked to stand up together and dance as
the song plays.

Guided Practice: Call on four students to

show a particular dance move for a step in
the cycle and to briefly correlate the move
to the definition.
Ask students to get in groups of 3 or 4 to
make their own rap, song, or poem about
the water cycle using their textbook and
knowledge they just learned. Give students
15 minutes to do this. Students will then
perform their skit in front of the class (each
should take no longer than a minute)
Teacher will walk around to make sure
information is correct and answer any
questions.

-four different students will be called on to

recall specified dance move and to briefly
explain that stage.
-students will be instructed to get into
groups of 3 or 4 to make a song, rap, or
poem about the water cycle like the one we
just watched and danced to.
-students are given 15 minutes to create a
song (its okay if its not finished)
-song should be 30 seconds to 1 minute
long
-Each group will present their song.

Independent Practice: Students will be

asked to write two complete sentences
classifying each step in the water cycle
including evaporation, condensation,

-Students will be asked to go to individual

seat and work independently to write two
complete sentences about each step in the
water cycle that we had learned.

precipitation, and run off. Walk around and

monitor answers to examine whether a
reteach is needed.
Closure: Ask all students to stand up and
go through all of the water cycle dance
moves while stating the name of each step.

Options:
Enrichment: If students easily understand
the material I will ask the student to
compare and contrast between the steps or
ask them to create a model of the cycle for
other students to be able to see. (I can use
this model to aid in reteach)
Modifications/Correctives:
Follow IEPs for specific students.
References:

-All students will stand up and go through

all of the water cycle dance moves while
reciting all of the steps according to each
move.

Reteach: If the student requires a reteach I

will draw out the water cycle for them to
help them visualize the process in order
and why its in that order.
