First day of class procedures

Greetings - Greet students at the door, welcoming each student as they enter with a
smile and a handshake. Making the first impression a great one is key. It can set the
tone for the entire year.

Get to know each other activity - Students will

be instructed to stand and say a few things
about themselves: their name, if they have a
nickname, two things they like and one thing
they dislike.
Outline of class rules, policies and procedures Students will be presented with class syllabus
outlining all need to know class policies,
upcoming work, assignments, projects, homework, labs, field trips and outdoor
classes/labs. Class rules and important policies and procedures will be carefully
explained to the class.

Beginning of class procedures

General Classroom Rules - to be posted in the classroom on a large poster in a
highly visible place.
1. Be respectful of yourself and others.
2. Every instruction should be carried out QQ (quickly and quietly)
unless instructed otherwise.
3. Come to class on time and prepared to learn.
4. Keep your electronic devices on silent and out
of sight unless instructed to use them.
5. Clean up after yourselves.
Entry routine- These instructions will be on a
poster. Students will be instructed to check the
board for instructions as they enter the room.
These instructions should be followed closely
and quietly until they are instructed otherwise.
Bell ringer activities- this opener/focus activity
will be posted on the board for the students to
perform as they are entering the classroom
before class actually starts. It may consist of a
group activity, individual work, technology
assignment, or other activity that may require
materials listed on the board. The student will
be expected to gather materials quickly and
quietly, sharing and rotating the supplies with
others if necessary. If activity involves group
work or discussions, the students will be expected to keep the classroom noise to a
minimum.

Attendance- The first day of class the students will decorate a name tent, placing
on it their names (legibly) and anything they like that would make it an individual
self expression, something to make it uniquely theirs. At the beginning of the class
after this first day, the students will be instructed to take their name tents from a
designated place in the classroom on their
way to their desk. This way the teacher can
quickly see who is absent or tardy by the
name tents that are left over.
Tardiness- A late student should enter the
classroom quietly without disruptions,
check the board for work and begin
assigned work or activity. If the student has
slip, hall pass or note excusing tardy, he/she
should bring it directly to the teacher before
quietly taking seat. If the teacher is already
teaching, then the student should leave the
slip, hall pass or excusal note on the teachers desk.

General Classroom Procedures

Journals
All students are expected to maintain a class journal, a 1 3-ring binder with
dividers labeled: Vocabulary, Notes 1, Notes 2, Notes 3, and Extra, in this
order. On top of the first tab (Vocabulary), the student should place the class
syllabus for easy reference. The vocabulary list tab will comprise all
vocabulary lists from all chapters placed behind the tab. Notes 1 tab will
have all notes for the first six weeks placed behind the tab. Notes 2 tab will
have all notes for the second six weeks placed behind the tab. Notes 3 tab
will have all notes for the third six weeks placed behind the tab. At the start
of the fourth six weeks, the notes from the first six weeks will be moved to
behind the extras tab. The same will be done for Notes 2 and 3 with respect
to the fifth and sixth six week periods with each set of notes being placed in
the back of the notebook behind the sections proceeding it. The class journal

will be turned in for inspection by the

teacher before each test and will be
graded for participation.
Note taking
All students are expected to take
thorough notes over the topics covered
in class, noting in their journals where
their weaknesses lie, questions they might have for
the teacher and areas they wish to research further
on their own. Student participation of this will be
monitored by the teacher. If the student was
absent, they should see another student's notes to update their note and
vocabulary journals. The teacher will explain a system of abbreviations that
will be used in class during lecture (example Iemf = induced electromagnetic
field, three dots in triangle shape = therefor or because of). These should be
used as shorthand to make notes more efficient and quick.
Homework procedures
Homework will be assigned in class and posted on the class website. Most
assignments will be listen on the class syllabus as well. The homework
assignments could consist of reading, answering questions, constructing a
project or technology based. Homework is to be turned in as the student
enters the room in the designated class tray on the day that it is due. Late
work will be accepted in alignment with campus policy.
Work requirements
The students should make a heading with their name, class, period, and date
on the top right hand of the page unless there is an alternate place on the
handout/sheet on all documents, notes, homework etc. All work should be
done in blue or black ink, with legible handwriting and minimal spelling and

grammar mistakes. Full answers are expected, unless multiple choice or fill
in the blank, all answers should be given in short essay format.
Test taking procedures
As the students enter the
classroom they will turn in their
journals to a designated area in the
classroom to be inspected by the
teacher during the test. The
students should clear their desks
of all materials except a pen and
remain quiet. As the tests are
handed out, they should be placed face down and left on the desk until all
tests are passed out and they are instructed to turn the test over and begin.
When the teacher is ready to begin passing out the tests, the students should
remain COMPLETELY SILENT from this point onwards. The test will be
given through the remainder of the class period, time is up and tests are due
to be turned in when the dismissal bell rings. Cheating, talking, whispering,
passing notes and looking at cell phones are not permitted once the tests are
ready to hand out. If a student has a question regarding the test, they can
raise their hand and the teacher will come over and address the issue.
Passing in paper procedure
The students will be expected to pass papers in from back to front along the
rows if the seats are arranged in rows. If the seating is in a group
arrangement, then the papers should be centralized among group members,
then the collective group papers will be picked up by the teacher.
Passing out papers procedure
The students will be expected to take one and pass it back or over until all
students have received the page or pages that are being handed out. If there
were not enough papers or packets for every student, the students missing

the papers should raise their hands and the teacher will bring more copies to
them.
Materials
When instructed, the students are
expected to retrieve materials from a
central location quickly and quietly,
returning to their seats as soon as
possible. If the supplies available are
limited, the students are expected to
share and rotate them so everyone has
and equal access. This should be done
without instruction or intervention
the teacher.

Class discussions
There will be times when topics are discussed with the entire class. During
this time, the students are expected to answer questions only when called on.
The student should state all answers and responses in a respectful way
towards the teacher and fellow classmates.

Group work
When instructed, the students should get into the group they are assigned,
quickly and quietly. All group members are expected to participate equally
in the group activity. These activities will be closely monitored by the
teacher, giving input, correcting mistakes and misbehavior when needed.
Early finisher
Those students who finish an activity earlier than their peers should sit
quietly, read ahead or ask the teacher for instructions.
Absentee folder
Students who are absent will have a folder or
binder for them with the work, homework, and
other assignments they missed. The student is
expected to retrieve this information on their
own without prompting, quickly and at the
beginning of class.
Bathroom break procedures
Students will be allowed to take restroom breaks when needed, one at a
time. They must take the
restroom break hall pass and
return promptly.

Hall pass
When a student needs to leave the room for another reason, he/she should
get a written pass from the teacher. On the pass, the teacher will write the
students name, destination, time leaving the classroom and purpose for
leaving. The student can ask to leave the class during free time or close to
the end of class, but not in the middle of instruction or group activities.

Lab procedures
Lab safety rules will be posted in
lab area or room. An entire page
of the syllabus will be dedicated
to lab procedures and an
acknowledgment of the safety
rules and expectations. Students
will be expected to follow all
directions and safety procedures
carefully during lab activities.
Students should be monitored
closely to ensure their safety and
adherence to the lab rules
(shown). The students will be
expected to behave accordingly,
no horseplay, pay attention and
stay on task.

Technology in the classroom procedures

Technology is a useful tool that can be implemented only with permission in
the class. When instructed to
do so, the student can use
their phones, tablets or inclass computers for research
purposes only. No use of
these devices is permitted
without permission or for
use other than the project
assigned.

Field trip procedures

Each school year has two scheduled field trips. All field trips require
permission slips similar to the one below to be signed by parents before the
student will be allowed to attend. Students are expected to behave and
participate in the same way they would in a classroom setting. They are
expected to stay with the group, listen to all instructions, and no horseplay.
There are no glass bottles allowed on school buses. Students should bring a
lunch or money to purchase a meal. For every field trip, the designated
meeting place is the schools front parking lot at least one hour before
departure time. The permission slips for these field trips are due to the
teacher no later than three days before departure time. No late submissions
will be accepted. The students who do not go on the field trip will stay in the
regular class with a substitute and have their own work assignments to
complete.

Outdoor class/lab procedures

Each school year the students will experience four outdoor lab activities. All
outdoor labs require parental permission forms to be signed and turned in no
later than the day of the lab, as per campus policy. The class will meet in the
classroom for attendance, then proceed outdoors in an orderly fashion to the
predetermined area. Students are expected to behave and participate in the
same way they would in a classroom setting. They are expected to stay with
the group, listen to all instructions, no horseplay, take notes and answer
questions/engage in discussions when prompted. Students who do not
receive permission to participate in the outdoor lab will remain in the
classroom with a substitute or teachers aide with their own work to
complete.

Teacher Procedures

Before first day procedures

Contact parents of students via e-mail or phone and meet with them if
possible. Attend school open house to
meet and greet new students and
parents. Arrange classroom furniture,
supplies and decorations according to
class and student needs. Update all
class syllabi, presentations,
assignments, curricula, forms and
websites. Get together with other
faculty members and confer with them
about their ideas and expectations for the new year.
New student procedures

The teacher will welcome the new student to class involving all students in
the classroom. Instruct them all to be welcoming and friendly. Direct student
to new student file that has information, class syllabus, permission slips,
emergency codes, and policies. The new student is expected to read over this
information. They may ask the teacher if there are any misunderstandings
after class.
Substitute teacher procedures
The teacher will leave a folder file
for the substitute with a welcome
letter introducing him/her to the
class. There will be a seating chart
with a roster and a brief explanation
of any difficult to pronounce names,
students with any personal, medical
or behavioral issues, and which
students need extra help or
monitoring (as it pertains to the class directly on a strict need to know
basis). Also included will be a brief description of classroom procedures,
rules, referral slips, and the regular teachers contact information.

Classroom volunteers and visitors procedures

The teacher will create a job list for a variety of available positions in the
classroom and send home a survey to parents asking if anyone is interested
in volunteering at the school. The teacher will provide a calendar of dates
and times they would be needed and an orientation meeting to introduce
everyone to the process. There will also be an appreciation event planned to
thank all the parents that took time out of their days to volunteer at the
school. When a volunteer or other visitor is in the classroom, the students
should be prepared for their arrival, planned or not. The students will be
instructed to keep their focus on the tasks at hand and not let the presence of
the visitor distract them from their work.

Parent-teacher conference procedures

The teacher will schedule the conference
during a time that is convenient for the
parent, be punctual about the time of the
meeting and use the time wisely so that all
topics of interest are covered during the time
allotted. The teacher should present an
organized and professional image that makes
the parent feel welcomed and comfortable.
The teacher will plan and prepare for the
meeting, greet the parent or parents with a
smile and have a place for the parent to sign in. The room should be at a
comfortable temperature and lighting level, maybe some light background
music or scented candles to create a soothing tone. If the parent is worried
or angry, the teacher will lessen any negative thoughts or misunderstandings
to the best of their ability, offering comfort, understanding and plans if
needed. The teacher will take notes on the meeting and confer with the
parent again if needed.
Misbehavior procedures
Much of the time a misbehaving
student has learned a negative way to
gain attention and needs to be taught
how to gain positive attention.
Disengaging with the negative
behavior is usually the best way to
handle acting out, but there are times when a more direct approach is
needed. When a student misbehaves, the teacher will stay calm and in
control of the situation and themselves at all times. When the student raises
their voice the teacher should lower theirs, never responding in anger or
feeding into the misbehavior by arguing. When a student misbehaves or acts
out, thanking them for sitting down or speaking in a low voice can correct

the behavior without taking away from the class. Approach the student to the
side, stooping down at eye level, calmly and firmly asking the student to
engage in better behavior. The teacher should state that they know they can
act better than they are acting today and they expect them to do their best in
everything they can. The teacher will ask a student who is repeatedly
misbehaving if there is something they want to talk about after class.
Sometimes just knowing there is someone to talk to will make the student
respect the teacher more which can lead to a better relationship with the
student in the classroom.
Emergency procedures
The teacher should line out
the procedures and exit
routes outlined by the
schools administrators in
case of a fire. The students
should be instructed to be
mindful of the routes, to
know them ahead of time.
If something happens and they have to leave the building, these are the
basic rules they should follow:
1. Do not panic! Proceed with caution, move quickly but do NOT run.
2. Stay with your class group, do not wander around or try to find others on
your own.
3. Keep an eye out for anyone who might need help along the way, draw
this matter to the attention of an adult or emergency personnel but do NOT
try to save anyone yourself.
4. Listen to the teacher and follow his/her instructions.
Death of student procedures
If the students are dealing with
the recent death of a classmate,

the teacher should allow some time for them to sit quietly. The teacher
should postpone any tests, major projects or field trips that might be coming
up and dedicate a class to a group discussion activity. The teacher will
instruct the students to take a few minutes to write down a few of their
favorite memories about the classmate, how they are feeling and the best
thing they learned from them. They can then share these feelings and
memories with the class, if they desire. This self expressive activity is
designed to get the students to talk about their feelings and work things out
together. They might need time alone to grieve, students particularly close to
the deceased student might need more time than others to adjust and process
the event. Such students might require out of class counseling sessions or
group therapy.

Death of parent procedures

A student dealing with the loss of a parent will
need lot of time to grieve and space to express
themselves if they feel the need. The student
may require space to quietly be alone. The
teacher should meet with the other students of
the class at a time when the student is not in the
class and explain that they may act differently
for a while and we all need to be as
understanding as possible. It is not uncommon for a person facing such a
loss to lash out in anger and they need to understand that if this happens to
not take it personally. The students need to understand that what their
classmate is going through is a very painful ordeal that will not get better
overnight, in a week, or maybe not even in a year. The student also might
miss a lot of school so the teacher should be flexible with their lesson
modifications. The family or guardians should be contacted if the teacher
notices harmful, antisocial or especially odd behavior.
