Electrical and Instrument Engineers, Supervisors and Technicians who need to develop and
demonstrate their competency in the selection, installation, inspection and maintenance of electrical
apparatus in potentially explosive atmospheres.
Course Pre-Requisites
Course delegates are required to possess relevant electrical/instrumentation qualifications and are
practising electrical craftsperson.
Course Overview
This course has been designed to train and examine the competence of electrical personnel working
in potentially flammable atmospheres. Course delegates will gain knowledge, understanding and
practice in the installation, inspection and maintenance of electrical and instrument equipment
installed in potentially hazardous areas.
The course covers the standards for the manufacture and installation of electrical/instrument
equipment and their protection concepts, which may be exposed to a potentially flammable
atmosphere.

Aims
The aim of the course is to provide delegates with knowledge and understanding on terminology and
protection concepts for electrical/instrument equipment utilised in a potentially flammable atmosphere.
Objectives
Select the protection concept, enclosure/equipment, glands and ancillary components and
install correctly in hazardous areas.

Understand the concept of area classification and the need to zone flammable atmospheres
accordingly.
Understand the various protection concepts namely EExd, EExe, ExN, EExn, EExia & EExib,

Protection concepts
Mandatory Requirement
Course delegates must complete the JTL Registration Form and bring to the course along with
evidence of Electrical/Instrument (or relevant trade) qualifications and photographic identification (ie
passport).
Results
Results should be received approximately 5 weeks after the last day of the course.
Certification
Successful course delegates will receive a UK JTL Certificate of Core Competence valid for 5 years.
