HW6

This document summarizes the results of homework problems calculating defects per million (DPM) under different process yield and fault coverage scenarios. It finds: 1) DPM of 105.355 for 90% yield and 99.9% coverage, and DPM of 692.907 for 50% yield and 99.9% coverage. 2) 99.9848% coverage is needed to achieve the same 105.355 DPM with only 50% yield. 3) DPM decreases from 63.342 to 0.5733 to 0.0019 as standard deviation increases from +/-4σ to +/-5σ to +/-6σ. 4) Motorola's reported 6σ value of 3.4

a. Why is this value different from Motorolas 6 value of 3.4 DPM ?

Studies have shown that the processes do not perform the same way in the long terms and in
the short terms. To account for this real life increase in process variation, an additional 1.5 shift
was introduced. This means that the process that fits 6 in short term will fit only a 4.5 process
in the long term because the process mean will move over time or the standard deviation of the
process will be greater than the standard deviation observed in the short term.

b. What is the 3.4 DPM equal to in terms of __+/- for a standard Gaussian dist. ?
