September Newsletter

2015
Dear parents,
Welcome to Senior Kindergarten at South March Public School. We hope you
all had a nice summer together and we are looking forward to an exciting
year filled with fun learning opportunities and lots of personal development
for your child.
We have a wonderful team who will be working closely with your child this
school year:
Mme. Angela Garneau and Mme. Helen Hamilton in the French class
Mrs. Allison Theobald and Mrs. Sarah Zong in the English class
During the course of the year we will be covering the six curriculum areas
(Personal and Social Development, French Language, Math, Science and
Technology, The Arts and Health and Physical Education) through play-based
learning and some teacher directed activities. The Ontario Kindergarten
Program can be found on the web at www.edu.on.ca should you wish more
information.
Please read the following important information:
1. Note Totes and Communication Books: We will be sending home with
every child a Ziploc Bag with a communication book. This bag will travel
back and forth (between both classes and home) with your child on a daily
basis. Please ensure that you check it daily. We will be placing all
newsletters, field trip forms, announcements and any of your childs work
in the bag. If you have a note for us, please leave the communication book
open to the page with the note and we will do the same. If the book is
closed, there will be no need for either of us to check it. All information
sent home in the bag is important for your childs school participation.

2. Alternating classes: The Senior Kindergarten EFI program is based upon

receiving 50% of French Instruction and 50% of English instruction
throughout the year. The children will be alternating classes every day.
One day they will be in French class and the next day they will be in
English class. For example, if your child were to start in Mme. Garneaus
French class, he/she will be in Mrs. Theobalds English class the next day.
A calendar is attached for your homerooom. Both Mme. Garneau and Mrs.
Theobald will be sending their own homeroom calendar monthly.
3. Mme. Garneaus and Mrs. Theobalds website: We are planning to have
it up and running by October. We will be posting what is happening in the
classroom every alternate week (one week Mme. Garneau will post things
that are happening in the classroom and the next week Mrs. Theobald will
post something), as well as, our monthly newsletters, calendars, and
important links. We will provide you with the link in the upcoming weeks.
4. Contact: If you wish to contact us, you may do so by e-mail,
communication book or by phone. Our e-mail addresses are:
[email protected]
[email protected]
5. Student Information Sheet: Could you please fill out the important
information sheet and return it the next school day. This sheet will be
stored in the classroom for quick access when needed.
6. E-mail address: On the important information sheet is a spot for your email address. We will be sending all monthly newsletters via e-mail and
any other quick notes or updates we need to give to you. We would
recommend checking your e-mail daily to check for any messages. If you
do not have an e-mail address, please let us know and I will make sure to
get you a copy of the newsletter.
7. School Supplies (voluntary): Each year we ask for a voluntary school fee
of 15.00$ per child. As well, if you have any extra medium and large
Ziploc bags, our classes are always in need of them. If you are able to
provide this it would be very useful to the classroom. Thank you.

8. Indoor shoes and a change of clothes: It is recommended that the

children keep:
a) A pair of indoor shoes at school that they can change into every
day. This helps keep the sand and dirt off the carpet. Velcro or stepin shoes that they can take off independently are the best choice for
school.
b) A change of clothes (shirt, pants, socks and underwear) in a Ziploc
bag. These too will be left at school for the year. Please label all
items with your childs name.
9. Bus tags: If your child rides on the bus, we have attached a tag to your
childs backpack indicating what bus they are on. Please leave this tag on
throughout the school year.
10. Toys: Please do not send toys to school with your child as we cannot
guarantee the safety of toys brought from home. Anything brought for
Show and Tell will be put in a special place and returned home.
11. Volunteers: We will soon be looking for volunteers to help out in the
classroom but not the first month or so. We would like to get the
children settled in and used to the classroom routines before parents
start coming in on a regular basis. We will be sending a note home,
probably in the middle of October which can be returned if you are
interested in volunteering your time this year.
12. Scholastic Book Orders: Please note that you are not obligated to
buy from these catalogue but the prices are very reasonable and the
selection of books are usually quite good. Should you wish to place an
order, please send a cheque made payable to Scholastic Canada and NO
cash please. Please ensure that you have used the prices listed for
Ontario residents. Any orders from the September catalogue are due
Monday, Sept. 21st, 2015.
13. Weather: Every day the kindergarten students have outdoor playtime
and will have exploration outside (small groups) for approximately 20
minutes (it is part of the Kindergarten program). The children will be

playing if it is drizzling, if its wet snow and if its -20 degrees or warmer.
Please have your child dressed accordingly.
14.

Drop-off-Pick-up:
Drop-off: When dropping off your child, please bring them to the
Kindergarten yard (at back) between 9:00 -9:15 am. A duty teacher
will be present. If you do not see a duty teacher, please wait to say
goodbye to your child until one is present. No child is to enter the
school yard, unless instructed so by a teacher.
Pick-up: This year, both Mrs. Thebald and Mme. Garneaus class will
have their pick-up in the back Kindergarten yard. To avoid the large
crowd of children being dismissed at 3:45, we would like you to pick
your child up at 3:40 pm and not 3:45pm. It is very important that
you arrive at this time to allow siblings in other classes to be picked
up at the bell.

15.

NO Beach towel/small blanket: we will be having a quiet time this

year but the children are not required to bring a towel or blanket into
the classroom. Please leave this at home.

16.

Birthdays: We like to celebrate each childs special day. Parents may

wish to send in stickers or pencils but NO FOOD due to allergies. If
your childs birthday falls on the weekend, we will celebrate it on the
Monday or the Friday. If you do not wish to celebrate a birthday,
please let us know. I will be setting up a class email list to help with
arranging parties.

17.

Reporting:
There are 3 formal reporting periods during the Senior Kindergarten
year:
In November a parent/teacher interview
In February a written report
In June a final written report.

18.

Library: Once a week, your child will participate in a scheduled library

period, which will be every TUESDAY. A book may be checked out and
taken home for enjoyment. The librarian is asking that you please
bring in a LARGE ZIPLOC BAG to place their book in. Please write
your childs name on the front on the bag. This will avoid any damage
to the books. Library will begin the 3 rd or 4th week of September.

19.

Snack and Nutrition Breaks

Our school is a NUT FREE environment. Please DO NOT send any
products containing nuts. Ensure you read labels on packaged crackers
and granola bars. We encourage healthy eating and good nutrition.
The students will be free to eat snacks during our large blocks of
uninterrupted play and will sit down to 2 nutrition breaks throughout
the course of the day. It would be beneficial to discuss with your
child a suggested eating plan. Discuss which foods you would prefer to
eat first (i.e., lunch) and what they should eat second.

Thank you for all your assistance and cooperation! We are looking forward to
getting to know you and your child this year! Its going to be a great year!
