OS/400 Main Menu - Help
The OS/400 Main (MAIN) menu allows you to select the general task you want to do.
How to Use a Menu
To select a menu option, type the option number and press Enter.
To run a command, type the command and press Enter. For assistance
in selecting a command, press F4 (Prompt) without typing anything.
For assistance in entering a command, type the command and press F4
(Prompt). To see a previous command you entered, press F9
(Retrieve).
To go to another menu, use the Go to Menu (GO) command. Type GO

followed by the menu ID, then press the Enter key. For example, to
go to the User Tasks (USER) menu, type GO USER and press the Enter
key. The menu ID is shown in the upper left corner of the menu.
For assistance in entering the GO command, type GO and press F4
(Prompt). If you do not know the entire menu name you can use a
generic name. For example, GO US* will show a list of all menus
that start with US.
Option 1. User tasks (USER)
Select this option to work with your own jobs on the system.
These tasks include:
o Display or change your:
- Interactive job
- Batch job
- Output files
- Library list
o Display messages
o Send messages
o Submit a batch job
o Change your password
o Change your user profile
Option 2. Office tasks (OFCTSK)
Select this option to process text, handle documents and

folders, and manage other office activities, by using:
o iSeries Access tasks
o Decision support to use database files and graphics
o Office security or the system directory
Option 3. General system tasks (SYSTEM)
Select this option to do tasks related to all jobs on the system.

For example, you can:
o Use communications or security
o Monitor and control system jobs and messages
o Display system or device status, or system operator messages
o Work with user data
o Back up an object
o Restore a copy of an object
Option 4. Files, libraries, and folders (DATA)
Select this option to work with user data, such as:

o Database files, distributed data management (DDM) files, or
source files
o Libraries that contain files, programs, and other objects
o Folders that contain folders and documents
o iSeries Access tasks
Option 6. Communications (CMN)
Select this option to configure and control your communications

network. For example, you can:
o Display communications configuration status
o Communicate with other systems
o Configure communications
o Manage and configure a network
o Verify a data link
o Send and receive files
o Work with communications jobs
Option 7. Define or change the system (DEFINE)
Select this option to configure, install or request information

about hardware devices (such as displays, printers, tape and
diskette devices, and controllers) and communications, or work with
security. For example, you can:
o Configure hardware and communications
o Install licensed programs
o Work with security tasks
o Display or change IBM market support contact information
o Work with the hardware and software resources of the system
o Work with a program temporary fix (PTF) that replaces the
affected objects in your licensed program
o Get technical information from IBM

o Display or change system values which control system
operations
Option 8. Problem handling (PROBLEM)
Select this option to start analyzing and solving problems. For

example, you can:
o Work with problems and analyze a new problem
o Display the history log
o Order, display, load, apply, and remove program temporary
fixes (PTFs)
o Use:
- Alerts
- Performance tools
- Programming language debug
- The market support product to receive technical information
from IBM about the OS/400 system
- The question and answer database
o Copy a screen image to IBM to determine a problem
Option 9. Display a menu (GO)
Select this option to choose the menu you want to display. You can
display menus and select options from them to do your tasks.
Option 10. Information Assistant options (INFO)
Select this option to find out where to look for OS/400 information,
how to comment on OS/400 information, and what is new in this
release of the OS/400 system.
Using this option you can also search for OS/400 online books, start
online education if an online course is installed, work with
problems and so on.
Option 11. iSeries Access tasks (PCSTSK)
Select this option to use the personal computer attached to the

OS/400 system. For example, as a user, you can:
o Copy PC documents to OS/400 system databases
o Copy OS/400 system databases to PC documents
o Work with folders and documents in folders.
And, as an administrator, you can:

o Initialize iSeries Access
o Create users of iSeries Access
o Configure the connection of personal computers to the OS/400
system.
Option 90. Sign off (SIGNOFF)
Select this option to end the job that you started on the display
station when you signed on.
Function keys
F1=Help
Provides additional information about using the display or a
specific field on the display.
F3=Exit
Ends the current task and returns to the display from which the
task was started.
F4=Prompt
Provides assistance in entering or selecting a command.
F9=Retrieve
Displays the last command you entered on the command line and
any parameters you included. Pressing this key once, shows the
last command you ran. Pressing this key twice, shows the
command you ran before that and so on.
F12=Cancel
Returns to the previous menu or display.
F13=Information Assistant
Displays the Information Assistant menu with several types of
assistance available. Press this key to access more information
about the OS/400 system, such as, what's new for this release of
the OS/400 system, how to comment on information, and where to
look for OS/400 information in books and online.
F23=Set initial menu

Changes the initial menu (the first menu you see after you sign
on) in your user profile. When you press this key, the menu
currently being displayed is set as the initial menu in your
user profile.
Enter
Submits information on the display for processing.

Provides additional information about using the display.
Home
Goes to the menu that was shown after you signed on the system.
This menu is either the initial menu defined in your user
profile or the menu you requested from the Sign-On display.
Page Down (Roll Up)
Moves forward to show additional information for this display.
Page Up (Roll Down)

Moves backward to show additional information for this display.
Print
Prints information currently shown on the display.
