READING

We have completed the first unit in our Schoolwide reading program. We covered various topics in a
brief overview to prepare us for the upcoming units. Our next unit of study is fiction. We will take a look
at realistic fiction, historical fiction, folktales and fables. Our first story of study will be "Anansi the
Spider." The students continue to read at an independent level daily and conference with us about the
skills we cover and the stories they are reading. The kids are practicing writing down their connections
and ideas about what they are reading in their journals. Please remember to ask your child about
his/her reading goals in order to support this learning.
If you have time to visit, our class has added two new bulletin boards to the second floor hall. Stop up
to view the amazing work the third graders are doing. Their minds are creative, active and thinking
BIG!

MATH
We have come to the conclusion of our first chapter in math, and boy, was it a long one! :-) The kids
learned many new strategies and approaches for solving word problems and gained experience in most
of their multiplication and division math facts. They all performed amazingly on their final chapter test!
Way to go third graders!
The only facts we have left to cover are 6's, 7's and 8's. These will be covered in unit 2. Please continue
to practice the level of facts your child is focusing on daily at home!
If you are looking for computer games, please check out:
The Number Games: Up, Up and Array, Levels A, B, E, G and P
Numberopolis: Carnival Stories, Levels S and T
Country Countdown: Counting Critters, Level W
They can be found on the Think Central website. There is a link on my webpage. Xtramath is a great
way to practice facts. There is a link on my webpage for this as well. Kids may also use DreamBox for
additional math practice at home. Please remember not to help your child when using this program. It
will adjust to his/her level as necessary.

SCIENCE
Wow! Our kids are learning some big words....hover, density, buoyancy, mass, volume. They are making
hypotheses and then testing their predictions. Some kids made amazing inferences about objects when
we accidentally used sugar water instead of regular water....they are really thinking. Our next step will
be putting our knowledge to the test as we create in small groups. Stay tuned!

CREATIVE OPPORTUNITY
The milk carton challenge is underway, and we are making great progress. If your child would like to
help build our milk carton puppy, we welcome extra hands and creative minds. We are currently
meeting Monday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoons during chugim.

300 MINUTE CLUB REMINDERS

Each time your child reads, PLEASE be sure to date the recording sheet, list the accurate number of
minutes, list the title of the book read, and initial that you agree with the entry. Then, at the end of the
month, before turning in a completed 300 Minute Club form, please total the minutes your child has
read. Thank you in advance for your help with this process.

YAHADUT (JEWISH STUDIES)

In Jewish Studies, the third graders have begun the practice of chevruta, a traditional model of learning
Torah though partner learning. In small chevrutot (groups), the students studied different sections of
the second chapter of Bereshit, the story of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. After analyzing a few
lines, the chevrutot created presentations to teach the material to the class, using tools such as
Toontastic, iMovie, and good old play writing. We spent a great deal of time discussing and practicing
what small group work looks like, including written reflection and peer critique. Ask your child about
learning in a chevruta!

IVRIT (HEBREW)
Students have been working on building their vocabulary, question and answer words, and
strengthening their reading skills.

MUSIC
As some of you may know, third, fourth and fifth grades have music class together as a blended group.
We love the mixed ages and the enthusiasm. We are currently learning some new music for Shabbat
Sing and looking ahead to Special Friend Day on Nov. 20. Just a friendly reminder that when early
dismissal starts, Shabbat Sing will move to the 8:05 a.m. time slot.

GYM
Jump Rope for Heart has started, and collection envelopes should be going home soon. Online is the
preferred method of collection; directions can be found on the envelope. All funds raised are due
by December 11.
In class we have been practicing our rolling and throwing skills while focusing on the opposition.

CALENDAR
Monday, Oct. 26: REGULAR school day!
Friday, Oct. 30: Field trip to First Stage to see James and the Giant Peach
Friday, Nov. 6: Shabbat Sing returns to 8:05 a.m.
2 p.m. Friday dismissals begin

CLASSROOM UP AND COMING:

We are so excited to introduce a great way for you to stay connected with your child and our third
grade class. This year we are moving into blogging. The blog will allow you to communicate with your
child, let him or her share what we are learning and also allow the teachers to communicate reminders
and exciting happenings in school.
Soon you will receive an email from your child that includes a link for you to subscribe to your childs
blog and your teachers blog. By subscribing, you should get notifications (very similar to Facebook)
showing that your child has posted to the blog and that he/she would like you to read and even
respond to the blog. You may share this link with other family members if you would like them to also
receive your childs blog.
Please make sure to follow the directions in the forthcoming email to receive notifications when your
child posts to his/her blog. If you need help, feel free to come in, and we will be happy to help you set it
up.
In order to receive notifications when we post to the teachers' blogs, we are asking that you
subscribe to the third grade teachers blogs as well. Simply click the link , click on Gev.
Lansing's picture, and you will see a "subscribe" button on the right. Subscribe to all.

Repeat this process with Gev. Kleiman's blog and Gev. Fox's blog. This way, instead of always
checking to see if we have posted something, you will be notified. Please do not hesitate to contact us
with any questions.
