An Introduction To A New Topic : Bushara Abdulkareem NO:37 1 Semester B.Ed Physicalscience

This document introduces the topic of forces, including different types such as magnetic, electrostatic, gravitational, and frictional. It discusses frictional forces in more detail, explaining that friction occurs between two surfaces in contact or sliding across one another. The surface of any object is rough at a microscopic level, and friction is the force that opposes motion between surfaces due to the interaction of these surface irregularities. There are two types of friction: sliding friction when an object slides across a surface, and rolling friction between wheels and a surface or when an object rolls. Friction causes disadvantages like wear and tear, energy waste, and resistance to motion. Methods to reduce friction include polishing surfaces, using lubricants between surfaces, and employing

AN INTRODUCTION TO

A NEW TOPIC ;

BUSHARA ABDULKAREEM
NO:37
1ST SEMESTER
B.ED PHYSICALSCIENCE

FORCE
In

science, a force is a push or a pull.

All force have two properties : Direction
and Size
A newton (N) is the unit that describes the
size of a force

DIFFERENT TYPES
OF
FORCES
MAGNETIC

FORCE
ELECTROSTATIC FORCE
GRAVITATIONAL FORCE
MECHANICAL FORCE
FRICTIONAL FORCE

FRICTIONAL FORCE
Frictional

force can exist when two

substances contact each other.
Friction is a force between two surface that
are sliding , or trying to slide across one
another.
Eg : You try to push a toy car along the
floor.

CAUSE OF FRICTION
The

surface of any object is rough.

Friction is the force that opposes the motion
between two surfaces that touch.
Even an object that feels smooth is covered with
tiny hills and valleys.
The contact between the hills of valleys of two
surfaces causes then to stick , resulting in friction.

Cause of friction

DIFFERENT TYPE
OF FRICTION
Sliding Friction :

Pushing an object across a surface .

When a body slides on the surface of another body

the force of friction which originates is sliding
friction .

SLIDING FRICTION

Rolling Friction :
Between
When

wheels and a surface

a body rolls over the surface of another body ,

the force of friction which originates is rolling friction

ROLLING FRICTION

DISADVANTAGES
OF FRICTION
1.
Friction produces wear and tear .
2.
Causes wastage of energy .
3.
Offers resistance to the motion of vehicles and hence speed is reduced
.
4.
Heat is produced between moving part in contact .

METHODS TO
REDUCE FRICTION
1 . Polishing the surface in contact :
The hills and valleys are to be minimized

POLISHING THE SURFACE

2. USE LUBRICANTS :

Proper lubricants like oil, grease,

graphite etc can be used . A thin layer
formed between the surfaces helps to
minimize friction.

LUBRICANTS

3 .USE BEARINGS :

Ball bearings and roller bearings are usually

used .Here sliding friction is converted into
rolling friction.

BEARINGS

QUESTIONS :
1 . What is FORCE ?
2 . What is FRICTIONAL FORCE?
3 .What are the different type of FRICTIONAL
FORCE ?
4 .Write the REASON for GREASE is applied
between moving parts of machines .
