Lesson Plan:
ENGAGE/CONNECT
Write the word Turkey on the board and say:
The answer is Turkey. What might the question be?
You may have to give the students some example questions such as: What do people eat on
Thanksgiving?
What kind of bird says "gobble, gobble?"
Write student responses around the word Turkey in a web.
Lead the students to start talking about Thanksgiving.
EXPLORE/CONNECT
Explain that Thanksgiving has been celebrated for many years in our country, and that we are going
to learn how different people celebrate this holiday.
Share with the class how you celebrate Thanksgiving. Then ask questions such as:
How does your family celebrate Thanksgiving? Have them share with a partner.
How are their celebrations similar?
How are they different?
Have students pick their favorite Thanksgiving tradition (if they dont celebrate, they can share a
favorite Fall tradition). As a shared writing activity, have students add their answers to the class
Thanksgiving Traditions chart.
What would the 1st Thanksgiving have been like without the Pilgrims or the American
Indians?
How did each of them influence the traditions that still carry on today?
In your mind, create a picture of what would be different about Thanksgiving today if one of
those groups would not have been there.
Draw a picture of what Thanksgiving would look like today if the Pilgrims or the Indians were
missing from the very 1st one. Write a sentence or two explaining the big difference.
CLOSURE:
Show students plantation book to give them ideas to dress up as for pioneer day!
