Mitosis

How cells divide

Why do cells divide?

1. So we can grow and
get bigger
2. To fix damaged or
missing cells when we
get hurt

Phases of Mitosis
-There are five stages
during Mitosis, and
one phase that occurs
before, or in-between,
the phases of Mitosis.
-The in-between phase
is called Interphase.

Phases of Mitosis continued...

-The five stages of Mitosis include
a. Prophase,
b. Metaphase
c. Anaphase
d. Telophase
e. Cytokinesis
-Some biologists do not include
Cytokinesis in the stages of Mitosis since
it is very similar to Telophase.

Interphase
-The cell is doing its normal
thing; organelles are all
doing their jobs.
-Resting state between the
process of cell division.

Prophase
-First part of Mitosis
-The cell starts to prepare for cell division
-The DNA uncoils and starts to look like
spaghetti, then turns into chromosomes

Metaphase
-The second phase of Mitosis
-The DNA lines up along a central
axis and the centrioles send out
specialized tubules that connect
to the DNA. The DNA (chromatin)
has now condensed into
chromosomes.

Anaphase
-Third phase in Mitosis
-The separation begins. Half of
the chromosomes are pulled to
one side of the cell; half go the
other way.

Telophase
-The fourth phase of mitosis
(sometimes considered to be
the last phase).
- Cell membrane starts to form
between the cell

Cytokinesis
-The final stage in Mitosis
-The cell divides its
cytoplasm and pinches off
into two separate but
identical cells.

-Lets test your knowledge
-When you see the following pictures, you
need to be able to identify what phase it is

Now tell me which phase
