John the Baptist preached in the desert of Judea, baptizing people and telling them to prepare for the coming of Jesus Christ. He lived simply in the wilderness, eating locusts and honey. When Jesus came to be baptized, John tried to refuse but baptized Jesus when he insisted. Later, John was imprisoned by Herod, who had him beheaded at the request of Salome during a dance at Herod's birthday celebration. John's disciples told Jesus of his death.
