Fall 2015

Homework No. 3
(Due Tuesday, September 22, 2015)
Problem No. 1 (25 points)
Solve
y + 2 y + y = 2u (t ) given: u(t) = sin(3t), y(0) = 1, y (0) = 2 . (You will get ZERO credit if
not using Laplace Transform)
1) Find the Laplace Transform of the output Y(s). In general, the output consists of the forced
response and the free (initial-condition) response, i.e. Y(s) = YF(s) + YIC(s). Please write
clearly what YF(s) and YIC(s) are respectively.
2) Based on the results in 1), use partial fraction expansion technique to find the time-domain
solution yF(t) and yIC(t), respectively. Then please give the total response y(t).
3) Please evaluate the expression of y(t) for very large t (i.e. t ).

Problem No. 2 (25 points)

Write the differential equation for the two-mass system in the figure below. Then find out the
transfer function from actuation force f(t) to x1(t) and x2(t), respectively, i.e. X2(s)/F(s) and
X1(s)/F(s).

Problem No. 3 (25 points)

Textbook Problem P2.26 (Spring-mass-damper Model of a Robot Arm).
1) Find the transfer function from input force F(t) to the displacement y(t) of mass m, i.e.
Y(s)/F(s).
2) Find the transfer function from input force F(t) to the acceleration ay(t) of mass m, i.e.
AY(s)/F(s).
3) Assume M = 10 kg, m = 2 kg, b = 10 N-s/m, k = 500 N/m. For AY(s)/F(s), use Matlab to plot
impulse response, step response with unit step input and zero initial conditions.

Problem No. 4 (25 points)

1) Develop a model for the heights h1 and h2 in the liquid level system shown in the figure
below. The input volume flow rate qv is given. Assume that laminar flow exists in the pipes,

and the laminar resistances are R1 and R2, respectively. The bottom areas of the tanks are A1
and A2.
2) Suppose the resistances are equal, i.e. R1 = R2 = R, and the bottom areas are equal, i.e. A1 =
A2 = A. Obtain the transfer function H2(s)/Qv(s).
3) Suppose the change in inflow rate qv follows a unit-step function. Find the steady-state
response for h2 using the Final Value Theorem.
