Deforestation : The main cause of soil erosion is the removal of vegetation or plants from the
surface of the soil which is called deforestation .
Soil erosion by water : Heavy rains and running water remove the top soil.
Soil erosion by wind : Strong winds blows aways particles of soil with it.
Q8. What are the advantages of building embankmebments along river banks?
Ans.1. Building embankments along river banks and bunds around fields prevents soil erosion .
2. Bunds arounds field help water to seep into the soil and raise the water table.

into the funnel with the help of a glass rod. The insoluble particles settle on top of the filter paper and the
clear water is collected in a container kept below the funnel.
1.
Distillation
The process of purifying water which involves boiling the water and then condensing the steam is called
distillation. It involves two processes evaporation and condensation of water. This method is used to
separate soluble impurities from water. Impure water is heated till it boils. On boiling, water evaporates
leaving impurities behind in the flask. The steam is passed through a condenser which is kept cool by
circulating cold water around it. The steam cools down in the cool condenser and changes into water which
is collected in another flask. This water is absolutely pure.
2.
Sedimentary rocks
Weathering of rocks takes place because of the effects of sun, wind and rain. The rocks break down in to
small pieces settle together, they are called sediments. These sediments are carried to different places by
wind, water and gravity. As the layers of sediment settle down on top of each other, their weight squeezes the
pieces together. The dissolved minerals fill in the spaces between the sediments and cement the layers
together, forming sedimentary rocks.
3.
Limestone
Limestone is made from shells of tiny creatures living in oceans. Their shells are made of calcium. After the
death of these creatures, the shells fall in to the bottom of the oceans. The shells change in to a mineral called
calcite which is the main substance in the limestone. It forms chalk which can help you to write on the
blackboard.
