About the NTU Cat Management Network

2014 and 2015 marked a new beginning for the

Cat Management Network as it celebrated its
10th anniversary with a fresh start.
The original 2014 Main Committee expanded
its Main Committee lineup to include 4 additional roles, to keep up with the changing cat
management landscape and maintain its
volunteer base. We convened an Extraordinary
General Meeting to announce our new efforts,
as part of a plan to better care for our campus
cats.
In AY2014/2015, NTUCMN recruited an estimated 52 members, 9 associate members, and
2 faculty advisors. Our cat population has
been declining, however, as an estimated 28
cats have been documented on campus. This is
in stark contrast to the estimated 100 cats
NTUCMN managed when it rst began in
2004.
The cat population in NTUCMN is now estimated to be around 7-10 years old on average,
and we have seen a corresponding shift to
their needs. We have spent over $4,564 in 12
vet bills this year, mostly on slow-healing
injuries, kidney and liver problems, and other
illnesses commonly associated with old cats.
The Cat Management Network began to amp
up its outreach efforts in 2014 and 2015, with
a revamped Tumblr blog, Facebook page and
Instagram prole. We also sought to reach out
to residents through the use of posters of our
cats, as well as with our fundraising efforts
with Love Kuching Project.

We also sought to facilitate ideation within

the cat welfare community by setting up the
Cat Talk 2015, which featured cat rescue group
Love Kuching Project, Cat Welfare Society, app
developer Pete, satirical Facebook page Cats
of Singapore and photographer Nicholas Lee.
NTUCMN understands the changing attitudes
toward our campus cats, and that the changing cat management landscape will necessitate a very different approach to what was
once a Trap-Neuter-Return Manage program.
We must be ready for the challenges that the
future will bring, so that we prosper in the
decade ahead.

President
NTU Cat Management Network

6 cats were sterilised in 2014/2015

Early 2014 saw several cats
enter the cat population in
NTU. 6 of them have been
sterilised, with 2 missing, 1
killed and 1 adopted.

2013/2014.

is the second-last batch of
kittens born in NTU, as the
last batch - by Sunshine, was
sent for adoption in AY

-ing to continue to integrate

sterilised cats with existing
cats on the campus cat
colony.
We will also continue our
pro-life policy in AY
2015/2016, and only abort a
pregnant cat if the situation
requires it.

5 cats remain undocumented

Late 2014 saw certain issues
develop between previous
volunteers and hall coordinators that resulted in a loss
of data.
Following a restructuring
and revamp of the blog and
club website, demographic
data regarding the cats was
lost. This was worsened by
missing hall coordinators
and feeders, which was the
cause of a delayed response
by our team with regards to
Hall 16s injured cat (see
above).

Measures to ensure that loss

of data between handovers
and a loss of management of
campus cats have been
implemented to ensure that
this does not happen again,
such as:
1) The creation of the Operations Manager role for oversight of all hall coordinators;
2) The consolidation of halls
into clusters;
3) An annual cat census.
Despite that, 5 cats remain
undocumented. They are:

(1) One unnamed ginger, at

Hall 13 (sterilised)
(2) One unnamed black cat,
at Hall 15 (sterilised)
(3) One unnamed tabby, at
Hall 3 (sterilised)
(4) One unnamed black cat,
at Hall 2 (Unsterilised)
(5) Terry, a tabby at Nanyang
Heights (sterilised)

8 cats went to the vet in AY2014/2015

12 vet bills were incurred by
8 cats in the last AY, which
cost NTUCMN $4,696.71
As most of the cats are
around 6-10 years old, they
required treatments for
illnesses more common for
old cats.
Two, Midnight and Ginger,
were boarded at Love Kuching Project, who became an
unofcial partner of
NTUCMN this year.

NTUCMN is enhancing its

relationships with other cat
rescue groups and recruiting
new fosterers so as to obtain
more support in case of
emergencies.
The 8 cats that went to the
vet are, from top to bottom:
(1) Cola, Hall 4, forwound on
paw
(2) Robbie, Hall 2, for pancreatic problems
(3) Charlie, Hall 10/11, for

gum problems
(4) Sky, Hall 2, for an infected wound on the paw
(5) Champion, Hall 10/11, for
persistent dermatitis on the
ear
(6) Millie, Hall 2, for an
infected wound on the paw

Activities

AY 2014/2015

Learning about
signs of sickness
NTUCMN started the year
with a small members-only eld
trip to Love Kuching Project, a
cat shelter located at Ubi. 11
members learnt how to spot for
possible signs of injury and
sickness in their daily operations.

Photographing the campus cats

A live demonstration was

performed by Elaine Chiam,
founder of Love Kuching. Members learnt how to identify
dehydration in cats, and how to
break up ghts between cats.
Members also learnt about
cat rescue in Singapore through
interactions with fostered cats;
they learnt the stories behind
each of the fostered cats and
how they were treated. They also
learnt about the cat welfare
community in Singapore in
general, and how a small-scale
cat shelter worked.

14 volunteers took part in

a three day phototrip around
campus to document all the
campus cats during the
winter break.

Activities
AY2014/2015

The trip, which aimed to

track down all 27 of the
campus cats and photograph
them, served as real-world
experience for volunteers,
who learnt how hard it could
be to track down individual
campus cats.
Some elusive one evaded
capture, and members had to
wait up to two days for
another sighting of the cat.

A total of 19 cats were

photographed, out of the 27
cats on campus. Hall residents were polled on the
names of the cats, in order
to create posters that will be
put up in hall noticeboards.
The posters are part of an
outreach program by
NTUCMN, to help residents
identify their campus cats
and know about their presence.
Members were assisted
by senior members of NUS
Cat Cafe, who took part in
the phototrip.

We eventually produced a
blog post educating campus
residents about these signs of
sickness, which include:
(1) conjunctivitis, a sign of cat
u
(2) behavioural changes
(3) fur loss and itching
(4) drooling, an indication of
gum disease
(5) discoloured gums.
Future training sessions like
this are planned to equip volunteer caretakers and coordinators
with the knowledge to better
take care of our cats.
The blog post can be found
on ntucmn.tumblr.com.

NTUCMN raised $317.53 for

Love Kuching Projects Impossible Fund in 1st and 2nd of April
this year.
The cat shelter was seeking
funds for an expansion to its
current Joo Chiat location. It
formerly assisted us with fostering Bowie, and helped us with
Gingers boarding and hospitalisation care.
12 volunteers assisted in
running a fundraising campaign
on campus through this two
days, which tied-in with the Cat
talk, a symposium to discuss
ideas for cats.

Some of the
merch sold
included
notebooks
and
coasters.

NTUCMN was fortunate

enough to obtain two sponsorships from Axxel Marketing and
The Coaster People for our
notebooks and coasters respectively.
We also launched pre-orders
for tote bags designed by Gary
Khoo, a year 2 ADM student.
In total, we sold 70 coasters,
32 notebooks, 47 Macbook
stickers, and 20 tote bags.
$240.00 was donated to Love
Kuching as per agreement.
NTUCMN is planning to hold
more of such events to aid the
cat welfare community.

Sharing is caring, for

our community cats
NTUCMN held a symposium for members of the cat
welfare and rescue community to discuss innovative ideas
to help cats in Singapore.
Called the Cat Talk, the
symposium, themed around
social media and cat welfare,
saw participants from six
organisations detail how they
used social media to fundraise for cats.

NTUCMN

Turmeric.

Among the invited guests

were pet photographer Furry
Photos, cat shelter Love
Kuching Project, satirical
Facebook page Cats of Singapore, social startup Pete,
and Cat Welfare Society.

a Love Kuching Project

rescue, who graced the event
with his monkey-like antics.
Turmeric soon became the
centerpoint, as many sought
to take photos with the boisterious little boy.

28 participants discussed
various aspects of fundraising
for social media, including
blogging, maintaining Facebook pages and Instagram
photography. Students also
got to interact with leaders of
the cat welfare community.

The Cat Talk was held

concurrently with a fundraiser for Love Kuching Project,
which managed to raise $317
for the cat shelter for an
expansion project.

The star who stole the

show, however, was Turmeric,

NTUCMN is aiming to
hold events annually as part
of its outreach to the campus
community.

and students on cat care and
cat behaviour; this involves
mediation of disputes relating to cats on campus.

The NTU Cat Management Network aims to:

We currently have 6 cat

cafs on campus - feeding
grounds for our community
cats, which are each led by
their own coordinators. Cat
coordinators manage the cats
within their designated hall
areas and report to the main
committee any emergencies
that happen.

(1) ensure that cats on

campus enjoy an environment that is safe and away
from harm, through the
establishment of cat cafes feeding grounds for community cats on campus.

(4) rescue community cats

that are injured or sick on
campus.

The 'cat caf concept which also exists in NUS stresses humane control of
cat population through
trap-neuter return programmes, and veterinary care
for cats when they are ill or
injured. It emphasises
responsible feeding practices
- allowing cats access to clean
food and clean water, which
are cleared after the cats are
fed.
We also educate residents
and students on campus on
cat care and cat behaviour;
we mediate disputes related
to cats on campus.
Our volunteers are mainly
undergraduates, graduate
students and alumni from the
school who are passionate
about cats.
