Topic: Addition and Subtraction within 20
Content: This lesson plan is for a 1st grade inclusion class. This lesson
plan includes a few strategies to get to the same solution. This is great
for targeting different learning styles in the classroom.

The students will be able to model addition and subtraction within 20 to

solve problem by using a number line (adding on or counting back), and
drawing cubes to illustrate their work.

1. Use addition and subtraction within 20 to solve word problems

using objects, drawing, and equations with a symbol for the
unknown number to represent the problem.
2. Solve word problems that call for addition of three whole numbers
whose sum is less than or equal to 20, e.g., by using objects,
drawings, and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to
represent the problem.
1. Students will be able to add and subtract within 20, by adding on,
taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with
using objects, drawing and equations to represent the problem.
2. Students will be able to add and subtract within 20 by counting on
or back, using a number line (e.g., 14+5= will be demonstrated by
going to 14 on the number like and counting on 5. Student will
stop on the number 19 on the number line and that would be their
answer.)

Introduction:
The students will be introduced to a 1- 20 number line to add and subtract

whole numbers by counting on to add or counting back to subtract. The
student will then create their own number line in their notes to use to help
them with this lesson. Along with using a lesson plan students will draw
cubes to demonstrate their understanding of addition and subtraction.
Addition and subtracting negative numbers will not assessed but it will be
introduce to students. It Is important to introduce it to students for them
to feel comfortable working with a number line.
I will demonstrate a couple of addition and subtraction problems to help

the students grasp the concept,
For example, 4+7=, students will start on the number 4 on their number
line and they will count on 7 to get the answer 11 for this problem.
The students will also draw (cubes) to show their work.
19-6=, the students will start on the number 19 on their number line and
they count back 6 to get the answer 13 for this problem.
The students will also draw (cubes) to show their work.
This is a complicated concept for students to understand therefore, a

PowerPoint presentation will be prepared to help students grasp addition
concept of this lesson. The PowerPoint presentation will also go over prior
knowledge that was already taught, but in a more visual presentation. The
power point presentation will further explain how to using number line
and drawing cubes to solve addition and subtraction problems.
After the presentation, students will work on a class worksheet. (Attached)
Conclusion:
Students will be introduced to a fun way to add and subtract numbers. On

the board I will write numbers 1-20. Then I will choose a number 1-20,
and students will try to guess how they could get that number by either
adding or subtracting. For example, if I choose the number 10. A student
could write on their white boards the number sentence 20-10=10. Each
student will have manipulator to help them understand the concept of 2010=10. Manipulators (objects) are a necessary visual aid for students.
Follow-up:
For homework students will create 20 of their own equations. Students

will solve the equation they created by using a number line and objects.
Student will also needs to demonstrate their work by drawing cubes.
Differentiation:
This lesson involves differentiation instruction, which is an approach to

teaching that advocates active planning for and attention to student
differences in classroom. This is necessary for a high quality curriculum.
This lesson activates all learning styles, visual, auditory, and kinesthetic.
Students are able to visually and kinesthetic understand how to add and
subtract by using a number line, objects, and drawing cubes. Students will
listen to the teachers instructions and the auditory PowerPoint
presentation to help them understand how to add and subtract using a
number like and drawing cubes.
Students will be assessed on their ability to add and subtract numbers
within 20 using a number line, objects and drawing cubes in a test. While
students are working on the test, I will walk around to assess that
students are using objects properly to solve each equation. (The test will
be attached. )
