April 25
VARANASI
2010
The river Ganga is considered to originate from Gangotri, a
place in the mountain range Himalayas just about two
miles away from Mount Kailas, the abode of lord Siva of the
Hindus. Flowing from a height of about 12 thousand feet
and all along the Gangetic -Plane into the Bay of Bengal in
the East, Ganga brings clear and mineral rich water and
-The boon
blesses the entire region with bountiful crops and became
the Water of Life for all the living on its banks. In the city of granter
Varanasi or Kasi, on the banks of Ganga is located one of
the main temples of Lord Siva. Thus, traditionally has been
a sacred and holy place of worship for Hindus all over the
world. The verses here-in were written by my father (late)
Sri. V.S. Sastry on one of his visits to this holy place.

VARANASI

Holy is Lord Siva’s abode, sweet Varanasi

Heaven is it to me on earth, my Kasi

So also to most of the Hindus wherever

Situated on the banks of Ganga

That flows from Gangotri, Bhujanga

Just about two miles south of Mount Kailas

Worshipped as the holiest of all rivers

For Hindus from birth to death whatever

Hardly a ritual is complete without thy water

Crystal clear and sacred being thy water

Another dip into Thee, Oh, merit giver

One dip more I say, not satisfied yet

Mortals and immortals in Thee ever wet

Hour after hour, day after day for ever

All sins removed, washed by Thy water

Cleansed by water of sacred Ganga

Holy is my body, and Thou art the potter

Mould Thou this clay into form different

Lay Thou Thy Self into this frame current

Let the Soul of mine become the Self omniscient

- (Late) Sri. V.S. Sastry
