Literature Circle Procedure Explanations

Preparation
1. All group members should have their packet open to their completed role sheet, ready to be
checked by the teacher.
2. All group members should have their novels ready for reference.

Participation
Share roles in this order:
Summarizer
a. Share the information that you recorded for each question.
b. Refer the group to pages in the novel for discussion.
c. Record notes under Group Observation from the Discussion.
Word Watcher
Read the first word that you identified.
Ask your group if anyone has heard the word before or knows what the word means.
Ask the group to find the word on the page you have identified and read the sentence it is used
in. Do the definition guesses they shared make sense?
Share the real definition. Repeat for at least two other words.
3. Literary Luminary
Read the question or observation you have written and ask your group to find the passage in
the book.
Ask group members to respond and comment.
Record the groups answer under Group Observation from the Discussion.
4. Connector
Share the connections that you made with the story.
Ask other group members to share any personal connections that they made while reading.
Ask whether this story reminds anyone of another book they have read or any events they have
heard of in the news/world. Discuss.
5. Discussion Director
Ask question #1 and take notes on group members responses.
Opinions/answers, should be supported by details from the text. Add your own thoughts to the
discussion.
Record notes under Group Responses. Repeat with questions 2 - 5.
