Turtlehead Multiplication
( 2 by 2 digit multiplication)

1.Objective:
Students will be able to identify the steps to solve a double digit multiplication problem. Students
will be able to solve double digit multiplication problems using the turtlehead strategy.
2.TEKS:
111.6. Mathematics, Grade 4, Adopted 2012.
(4) Number and operations. The student applies mathematical process standards to develop
and use strategies and methods for whole number computations and decimal sums and
differences in order to solve problems with efficiency and accuracy. The student is expected to:
(C) represent the product of 2 two-digit numbers using arrays, area models, or
equations, including perfect squares through 15 by 15;
3,Materials:

White Board
Dry Erase Markers and eraser
Notebook paper or Printer Paper
Tablets or computers
Handout (Multiplying 2 digit by 2 digit)
Pencil

4.Modeling:
The teacher will show a video about turtlehead multiplication. The video introduce
the turtle head method and how to use. The turtle head method is say you have 27 x 65.
First step is to draw the turtle head around the 27 and 5. Second you then multiply by
what's in the neck which is 5. When you multiply by the 5 to the 7 and 5 to the 2 you get
135. Third step is check off the carried number, draw a collar around the 5, and lay the
turtle egg which is the zero. The multiplay the other number which is 6. You get 1620.
The last step is to add 135 and 1620 and you get 1755. After every step the teacher will
pause the video and talk about the steps and have the kids do the problem along with
the video. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1hcKERTnNi0)
The teacher will show a presentation about 2 by 2 digit multiplication. In the first
slide you will review the vocab Factors and Product. Then the next slide shows aproblem
26 x 12. The teachers will shows the regular method without the 2 by 2 digit. First you
have to make sure the numbers line up. Then you began to multiply the bottom factors
with the tops factors one place, and then you multiply the one place to the top tenth
place. Next because the next place value is the tenth place you are going to put a zero
for a place holder. Next begin to multiply the 1 in the tens place with the top line factors.
Lastly you add 52 and 260 you will get 312.
The teacher and student will do some practice problem. The practice problems
are at the end of the presentation. The teacher will tell the students to get out a piece of
paper, and tell them they can use the turtle method or the regional method whichever
they choose. There is 6 practice problem the students will solve the problem and tell
them they have 3 minutes to solve the problem and the teacher will call a student to the
board to solve, and the students will put their thumbs up or down to say if the answer
was correct. The next slide shows the correct answer how to get the correct answer.
5,Activity
Students will split up in 2 teams they can choose girl vs boys or you can count
them off. After they get in their teams you will split the white board into 4 sections. After
you do that pass out you white board and dry erase markers. You will pick 2 from each
group go to a section of the big white board and you will give them a problem and who
ever get the answer correct first gets a point to there team. While the four students are at
the big whiteboard the students that are at their desk they will solve the same problem
on there little white board and show the teacher.
After a couple rounds of the game students will be split up into groups of based
on what they know and who is still having trouble. The kids who are having trouble will
come back to the back table with the teacher and the teacher will reteach the lesson to
them and play a kahoot with them. After they get it they will go around to each station.

Group 1 will go on there laptop or tablets and go to
(http://www.prongo.com/math/multiplication.html ). This is a baseball game where they
can practice their multiplication. Single is one by one digit multiplication. Double is 2 by 1

digit multiplication, and Home Run is 2 by 2 digit multiplication. They will have 45
seconds for each problem. They will have to show work for the 2 by 1 and 2 by 2 digit
multiplication there will be a basket in the middle of the table for the end of each station
so they can turn it in.
Group 2 will work on a handout they can use the turtle method or not it is up to
them. They will show work on the paper and the students will turn in the handout to the
basket in the middle of the tables at the end of the station.
Group 3 will play a board game The game will consist of how many players in the
group. Each player will roll a dice to see who can go first the person with the highest
number will go first. They will roll the dice and move that number of spaces. For example
if they roll a 3 they will move 3 spaces and land on a problem like 38 x 66 and they will
solve on a piece of paper, and at the end of the station they will turn in there piece of
paper with all their work on in into the basket in the middle of the table.
The Class will come together and play a jeopardy. You can spleat them up how
ever you want. When you have your team you can choose one person to say the answer
or have everybody in the group go but each member of the teams have to solve the
problems. (https://www.superteachertools.us/jeopardyx/jeopardy-review-game.php?

6.Assessment:
The students will create their own dream house using from previous lesson area
and 2 digit by 2 digit multiplication. They will either build it or draw it on a poster board.
They then will write about what is going to be in each room and what the room will look
like.
Vocabulary:
Factors:Numbers multiplied together
Product: The answer is a multiplication equation
