Imperfecto

A) There are two simple past tenses in Spanish: the preterit and the imperfect.

Notice that the endings of -er and -ir verbs are the same. Notice also that there is a written
accent mark on the final of -er and -ir verbs.

1) The imperfect tense in Spanish is equivalent to three forms in English:


a) I used to live in New York.
Yo viva en Nueva York

b) I was living in New York.


c) I lived in New York.

2) The Spanish imperfect is used to refer to habitual or repeted actions in the past, with
no reference to when they began or ended.
De que te hablaba Pedro?

What was Pedro talking to you about?

Me hablaba de la inflacin.

He was talking to me about inflation.

Yo siempre depositaba todo mi dinero en el I would always deposit all my money in the
banco.
bank.

Yo tambin ahorraba mi dinero, pero ahora


lo gasto.

I used to save my money too, but now I

3) The imperfect is also used to describe actions or events that the speaker views as in
the process of happening in the past, again with no reference to when they began or
ended.
Empezbamos a estudiar cuando l vino.

B) There are only three irregular verbs in the imperfect tense: ser, ir, and ver.
