The effect 'Impossible' utilizes mathematical principles to allow a spectator to arrange three objects in any order and then rearrange them based on the performer's mental directions to match a predetermined arrangement. A folded lottery ticket is used to reveal a message corresponding to the predetermined arrangement.

The performer tables a coin, keyring, and folded lottery ticket. They have the spectator arrange them in any order while their back is turned. The performer then gives mental directions to 'switch' the positions, ultimately arranging them in the predetermined order and placing two in pockets and holding one in their hands.

Variations mentioned include using different value banknotes with messages printed on them, using keys of different sizes, or having a photo 'prediction' of the arrangement. Alberto Navarrete suggests performing the effect twice with different messages on duplicate lottery tickets.

You table a coin, a pre-play Lotto ticket and a key-ring, then turn your back. Someone mixes them up and
sets them in a row. You ask that he switch them around, as you direct, then pocket two and hold one in his
hand. You now say that the coin is in his hand, the key-ring is in his right pocket and the Lotto ticket in his
left pocket. This latter revelation is weaker than the others until... you show that it has the words LEFT
POCKET printed on it!
Preparation: Put a single key onto a key-ring, fold a preplay Lotto ticket (or dollar bill) into a small packet (it has the
words LEFT POCKET printed on the inside). You also
need a 1 coin.
Method: Table the 1 coin, the key-ring, and the folded
pre-pay Lotto ticket. Turn your back, and have someone
arrange them, in a side-by-side row, in any order. Next say,
Switch the position of the key-Ring with the item to its
Right. If there is no item to its right... do nothing or, if you
prefer, make a noise with it as if you are switching its
position in the row.
Once they confirm that they have done this say, Switch
the position of the folded pre-play Lotto ticket with the item
to its Left. If there is no item to its left... do nothing or, as
before... make a noise with it as if you are switching its
position in the row.
Once they confirm that they have done this say, Switch
the positions of the coppeR coin with the item to its Right
etc.
Once they confirm that they have done this say, Place
the item at the far left of the row into your left jacket pocket,
then place the largest item, of the two on the table, into
your right jacket pocket, and hold the remaining item in your
cupped hands.
You now face them again and verbally reveal that the
item in their cupped hands is the coin and that the key-ring
is in their right pocket! You point out that it is obvious what
is in their left pocket, but you now ask that they remove the
folded pre-play Lotto ticket, unfold it and discover that you
had previously printed the words LEFT POCKET on it.
Have them remove it and confirm this.
Notes: This is based on a VERY old mathematical
principle. The final kicker of having the words LEFT
POCKET written on the folded pre-play Lotto ticket should
be credited to Vincent de Ponto (Magic Vinny) of the USA.
See his tip on my Vi$a Cabaret routine on the 'Customer
tips ideas etc.' page of my website.
Note: You can verbally change the end destinations of
the coin and key-ring OR ALL THREE... if you get a coin
and a key engraved with the words LEFT POCKET.
Over one of our weekly phone sessions, Andrew
Hawkes and I decided that a version using a copper key, a
smaller silver key and a key-fob (bigger than both keys)
would make the routine self-contained. Plus, you could
place two of your own keys on the fob, which has the words
LEFT POCKET engraved on it. Then, as you'll always
have it with you... you're always ready to perform!
Note: Alan Meyers (of St. Louis, USA) points out that
you can replace the final request, Place the item at the far
left of the row into your left jacket pocket, then place the
largest item, of the two on the table, into your right jacket
pocket. Finally, hold the remaining item in your cupped

hands with, Switch the position of the key-Ring with the

item to its Right. If there is no item to its right... do nothing
or, if you prefer, make a noise with it as if you are switching
its position in the row. As Alan points out this will always
put the three objects in the order, from the spectators view
point, Lotto ticket coin key-ring. This means that you
can end by saying, Put the object on the far left in your left
pocket, the object on the far right in your right pocket and
hold the remaining item in your cupped hands.
This is a great idea, but try out both ending and see
which gets the best response.
It occurs to me that, using Alans ending, you could hand
the spectator a face down photograph of the three objects
in the order Lotto ticket coin key-ring at the start of the
routine. You could then ask them to arrange the objects in
any order, with your back turned. They now look at the
photo to see if your prediction is correct. If it isnt... you,
sight unseen, give them directions that rearrange the
objects to match the photograph! Your photograph would
have to be taken in such a way that it could not be viewed
either way up, otherwise someone might say that you had
two outs. Have a friend take one of you sat at a table with
the objects laid out in front of you.
Another thought... using Alans idea, you could use three
different value bank notes. One has Left Pocket printed on
one side of it, one has Right Pocket printed on it and the
third bears the word Table I think you get the idea. You
can screw them into balls, or leave them printed side down.
Note: Alberto Navarrete (of Indiana, USA) e-mailed the
following idea After Stephens original version of the
effect, I put away the folded Lotto ticket and start to pick up
the key-ring and coin, as if about to pocket them too. I then
decide to offer to perform IMPOSSIBLE a second time. I
take out the Lotto ticket (actually a duplicate with the
message RIGHT POCKET printed on it) and go through
the same process as before, except that I instruct the
spectator to place the item at the far left of the row in his
right pocket, then the larger item of the remaining two in his
left pocket and the remaining item in his cupped hands. I
then reveal that, as before, the copper coin is in his hands
(it is shown). Then I say, And you know, from last time, the
other items are in your pockets. Please take them out.
Once they are out, I say, See, the key-ring was in your left
pocket and the Lotto ticket was in your right pocket You
dont seem too convinced. Please open the Lotto ticket.
The message now reads RIGHT POCKET!
