Profitable?

Concorde operating costs over

nearly 28 years of operation were
approximately 1 billion, with
revenues of 1.75 billion. This
proves that even though the cost
may be way up there, it is still able
to generate major profits, even if
only a little bit at a time

Reflection Question:
What can you do to be ready for
the future?
The first thing you can do is
prepare for major changes. Youll
have to accept them for your new
ways of life. Luckily, things like
supersonic transportation dont get
developed in a day; it takes a
while to produce, so you will have
time to get accustomed to it. We
can expect supersonic traveling to
get a lot more popular as the years
pass by, mainly because they can
travel from point A to point B
faster than anything else.

A supersonic
transport (SST) is a
civilian supersonic
aircraft designed
to transport passengers
at speeds greater than
the speed of sound. To
date, the only SSTs to see
regular service have been
Concorde and the Tupolev
Tu-144.

Studies
Supersonic airliners have been the
objects of numerous recent and ongoing
design studies. Drawbacks and design
challenges are excessive noise generation
(at takeoff and due to sonic
booms during flight), high development
costs, expensive construction materials,
great weight, and an increased cost per
seat over subsonic airliners. Despite
these challenges, Concorde was operated
profitably in a niche market for over 27
years.

History
Who, What, When, Where,
How, and why?
Hawker Siddeley is credited
with the first designs of a
supersonic aircraft. Hawker
Siddeley is a group of
British Manufacturing
companies engaged in
aircraft production. The
designs were given the OK
in the 60s but the cost was
too high. but costs were so
high that the Bristol Aero
plane Company and Sud
Aviation eventually merged
their efforts in 1962 to
produce Concorde. The
designs aimed to ferry
many people around the
world, with the center being
the UK.

Comparison

Along with shifting political

considerations, the flying public
continued to show interest in highspeed ocean crossings. This started
additional design studies in the US,
under the name "AST" (Advanced
Supersonic Transport). Lockheed's SCV
was a new design for this category,
while Boeing continued studies with the
2707 as a baseline.
By this time, the economics of past SST
concepts no longer made sense. When
first designed, the SSTs were
envisioned to compete with long-range
aircraft seating 80 to 100 passengers
such as the Boeing 707, but with newer
aircraft such as the Boeing 747carrying
four times that, the speed and fuel
advantages of the SST concept were
washed away by sheer size.
