1. Now King David was old, advanced in ְו ַה ֶמּלְֶך דָּ וִד ז ָקֵ ן בָּא ַבּיּ ָמִ ים ַוי ְ ַכסֻּהוּ 1 wəhammeleḵə dāwiḏ Et rex David senuerat
ַבּ ְבּגָדִ ים וְֹלא יִחַם ֹלו׃
age; and they covered him with zāqēn bā’ bayyāmîm habebat que aetatis
clothes, but he could not keep warm. wayəḵassuhû babəḡāḏîm plurimos dies; cum que
wəlō’ yiḥam lwō: operiretur vestibus, non
calefiebat.
2. So his servants said to him, "Let them ִי וַיּ ֹאמְרוּ ֹלו ֲעבָדָ יו יְבַקְ שׁוּ לַאדֹנ 2 wayyō’mərû lwō Dixerunt ergo ei servi
ַה ֶמּלְֶך נַע ֲָרה בְתוּלָה ְו ָעמְדָ ה ִל ְפנֵי
seek a young virgin for my lord the ‘ăḇāḏāyw yəḇaqəšû sui: “ Quaeratur domino
5. Now Adonijah the son of Haggith ַואֲדֹנִיּ ָה בֶן־ ַחגִּית מִתְ נַשֵּׂ א לֵאמ ֹר 5 wa’ăḏōnîyâ ḇen-ḥagîṯ Adonias autem filius
ֲאנִי ֶאמְֹלְך ַויַּעַשׂ ֹלו ֶרכֶב וּפ ָָרשִׁ ים
exalted himself, saying, "I will be miṯənaśśē’ lē’mōr ’ănî Haggith elevabatur
7. He had conferred with Joab the son of דְ ב ָָריו עִם י ֹואָב בֶּן־צְרוּי ָה ַויִּהְיוּ 7 wayyihəyû ḏəḇārāyw Et sermo ei cum Ioab
ְועִם ֶא ְבי ָתָ ר הַכֹּהֵן ַויּ ַ ְעזְרוּ אַח ֲֵרי
Zeruiah and with Abiathar the priest; ‘im ywō’āḇ ben-ṣərûyâ filio Sarviae et cum
אֲדֹנִיּ ָה׃
and following Adonijah they helped wə‘im ’eḇəyāṯār hakōhēn Abiathar sacerdote, qui
him. wayya‘əzərû ’aḥărê adiuvabant partes
’ăḏōnîyâ: Adoniae.
8. But Zadok the priest, Benaiah the son ְוצָד ֹוק הַכֹּהֵן וּ ְבנָי ָהוּ בֶן־י ְה ֹוי ָדָ ע 8 wəṣāḏwōq hakōhēn Sadoc vero sacerdos et
ûḇənāyâû ḇen-
שׁ ְמעִי ִ ו ְֵרעִי ְו ַהגִּבּ ִֹורים ְונָתָ ן ַהנָּבִיא ְו
of Jehoiada, Nathan the prophet, Banaias filius Ioiadae et
Shimei, Rei, and the mighty men who ֲאשֶׁר לְדָ וִד ֹלא הָיוּ עִם־אֲדֹנִיּ ָהוּ׃ yəhwōyāḏā‘ wənāṯān Nathan propheta et
belonged to David, were not with hannāḇî’ wəšimə‘î wərē‘î Semei et Rei et robur
Adonijah. wəhagibwōrîm ’ăšer exercitus David non erat
ləḏāwiḏ lō’ hāyû ‘im- cum Adonia.

9. Adonijah sacrificed sheep and oxen ַויִּזְבַּח אֲדֹנִיּ ָהוּ צ ֹאן וּ ָב ָקר וּמ ְִריא 9 wayyizəbaḥ ’ăḏōnîyâû Immolatis ergo Adonias
ṣō’n ûḇāqār ûmərî’ ‘im
עִם ֶאבֶן הַזּ ֹ ֶחלֶת ֲאשֶׁ ר־אֵ צֶל עֵין
and fatlings by the stone of Zoheleth, ovibus et vitulis et
10. But he did not invite Nathan the ְואֶת־נָתָ ן ַהנָּבִיא וּ ְבנָי ָהוּ 10 wə’eṯ-nāṯān hannāḇî’ Nathan autem prophetam
שֹׁלמ ֹה אָחִיו ְ ְואֶת־ ַהגִּבּ ִֹורים ְואֶת־
prophet, Benaiah, the mighty men, and ûḇənāyâû wə’eṯ- et Banaiam et robustos
ֹלא קָ ָרא׃
Solomon his brother. hagibwōrîm wə’eṯ- quosque et Salomonem
šəlōmōh ’āḥîw lō’ qārā’: fratrem suum non
vocavit.
11. Then Nathan spoke to Bathsheba the שׁבַע ֶ וַיּ ֹאמֶר נָתָ ן ֶאל־בַּת־ 11 wayyō’mer nāṯān ’el- Dixit itaque Nathan ad
שׁ ַמעַתְּ כִּי ָ אֵם־שְֹׁלמ ֹה לֵאמ ֹר הֲֹלואlē’mōr hălwō’ šāma‘atə kî
mother of Solomon, saying, "Have baṯ-šeḇa‘ ’ēm-šəlōmōh Bethsabee matrem
14. "Behold, while you are still there ִהנֵּה ע ֹודָ ְך מְדַ בּ ֶֶרת שָׁ ם עִם־ ַה ֶמּלְֶך 14 hinnēh ‘wōḏāḵə Et, adhuc ibi te loquente
ַו ֲאנִי אָב ֹוא אַח ֲַרי ְִך וּ ִמלֵּאתִ י
speaking with the king, I will come in məḏabereṯ šām ‘im- cum rege, ego veniam
15. So Bathsheba went in to the king in שׁבֶע אֶ ל־הַמֶּ לְֶך ַהחַדְ ָרה
ֶ וַתָּ ב ֹא בַת־15 watāḇō’ ḇaṯ-šeḇe‘ ’el- Ingressa est itaque
hammeleḵə h ḥaḏərâ
ְו ַה ֶמּלְֶך ז ָקֵ ן מְא ֹד ַו ֲאבִישַׁ ג הַשּׁוּנַמִּיתwəhammeleḵə zāqēn
a
the bedroom. Now the king was very Bethsabee ad regem in
ַחטָּאִ ים׃
fathers, that I and my son Solomon patribus suis, erimus ego
will be considered offenders." ûḇənî šəlōmōh ḥaṭṭā’îm: et filius meus Salomon
peccatores ”.
22. Behold, while she was still speaking ְו ִהנֵּה ע ֹודֶ נָּה מְדַ בּ ֶֶרת עִם־ ַה ֶמּלְֶך 22 wəhinnēh ‘wōḏennâ Adhuc illa loquente cum
ְונָתָ ן ַהנָּבִיא בָּא׃
with the king, Nathan the prophet məḏabereṯ ‘im- rege, Nathan propheta
came in. hammeleḵə wənāṯān venit;
hannāḇî’ bā’:
23. They told the king, saying, "Here is ַויַּגִּידוּ ַל ֶמּלְֶך לֵאמ ֹר ִהנֵּה נָתָ ן 23 wayyagîḏû lammeleḵə et nuntiaverunt regi
Nathan the prophet." And when he שׁתַּ חוּ ַהנָּבִיאְ ִ ַויּ ָב ֹא ִל ְפנֵי ַה ֶמּלְֶך ַויּ lē’mōr hinnēh nāṯān dicentes: “ Adest Nathan
אָרצָה׃ְ ַל ֶמּלְֶך עַל־ ַאפָּיו
came in before the king, he prostrated hannāḇî’ wayyāḇō’ lifənê propheta ”. Cumque
himself before the king with his face hammeleḵə wayyišətaḥû introisset ante
to the ground. lammeleḵə ‘al-’apāyw conspectum regis et
’ārəṣâ: adorasset eum pronus in
terram,
24. Then Nathan said, "My lord the king, וַיּ ֹאמֶר נָתָ ן אֲדֹנִי ַה ֶמּלְֶך אַתָּ ה 24 wayyō’mer nāṯān dixit Nathan: “ Domine
יִמְֹלְך אַח ֲָרי וְהוּא אָמ ְַרתָּ אֲדֹנִיּ ָהוּ
have you said, `Adonijah shall be king ’ăḏōnî hammeleḵə ’atâ mi rex, tu ergo dixisti:
אֲדֹנִי ַה ֶמּלְֶך׃
the LORD, the God of my lord the hammeleḵə wayyō’mer| “ Amen, sic loquatur
king, say. ’āmēn kēn yō’mar yəhwâ Dominus Deus domini
’ĕlōhê ’ăḏōnî hammeleḵə: mei regis.
37. "As the LORD has been with my lord ַכּ ֲאשֶׁר ָהי ָה י ְהוָה עִם־ ֲאדֹנִי ַה ֶמּלְֶך 37 ka’ăšer hāyâ yəhwâ Quomodo fuit Dominus
]י ִ ְהי ֶה =ק[ ]יְהִי =כ[כֵּן
the king, so may He be with Solomon, ‘im-’ăḏōnî hammeleḵə cum domino meo rege,
תְּ ַבשֵּׂר׃
good news." quia vir strenuus es et

43. But Jonathan replied to Adonijah, Responditque Ionathan
אֲדֹנֵינוּ ַה ֶמּלְֶך־דָּ וִד הִמְ לִיְך
"No! Our lord King David has made wayyō’mer la’ăḏōnîyâû Adoniae: “ Nequaquam!
אֶת־שְֹׁלמ ֹה׃
Solomon king. ’ăḇāl ’ăḏōnênû Dominus enim noster,
hammeleḵə-dāwiḏ rex David, regem
himəlîḵə ’eṯ-šəlōmōh: constituit Salomonem
ַויּ ִשְׁ לַח אִתּ ֹו־ ַה ֶמּלְֶך אֶת־צָד ֹוק הַכֹּהֵן44 wayyišəl ḥ ’itwō-

1. As David's time to die drew near, he ַויִּק ְְרבוּ י ְ ֵמי־דָ וִד לָמוּת ַויְצַו 1 wayyiqərəḇû yəmê- Appropinquaverant

אֶת־שְֹׁלמ ֹה בְנ ֹו לֵאמ ֹר׃
charged Solomon his son, saying, autem dies David ut

2. "I am going the way of all the earth. ָָאָרץ ְו ָחזַקְתּ

ְו ָהי ִיתָ ְל ִאישׁ׃
Be strong, therefore, and show kāl-hā’āreṣ wəḥāzaqətā universae terrae;
yourself a man. wəhāyîṯā lə’îš: confortare et esto vir
3. "Keep the charge of the LORD your שׁמ ֶֶרת י ְהוָה אֱֹלהֶיָךְ שׁמ ְַרתָּ אֶת־ ִמ ָ ְו 3 wəšāmarətā ’eṯ- et observa decreta
ָל ֶלכֶת בִּדְ ָרכָיו ִלשְׁמ ֹר חֻקּ ֹתָ יו
God, to walk in His ways, to keep His mišəmereṯ| yəhwâ Domini Dei tui, ut
שׂ ָראֵל׃ ְ ִי
throne of Israel.' ûḇəḵāl-nafəšām lē’mōr in veritate, in omni corde
lō’-yikārēṯ ləḵā ’îš mē‘al suo et in omni anima sua,
kissē’ yiśərā’ēl: non auferetur tibi vir de
solio Israel”.
ְוגַם אַתָּ ה י ָדַ עְתָּ אֵת אֲ שֶׁ ר־ ָעשָׂה לִי5 wəḡam ’atâ yāḏ ‘ətā ’ēṯ

5. "Now you also know what Joab the Tu quoque nosti, quae
י ֹואָב בֶּן־צְרוּי ָה ֲאשֶׁ ר ָעשָׂה
son of Zeruiah did to me, what he did ’ăšer-‘āśâ lî ywō’āḇ ben-
fecerit mihi Ioab filius
ṣərûyâ ’ăšer ‘āśâ lišənê-
שׂ ָראֵל לְאַ ְבנֵר ְ ִ שׂ ֵרי ִצבְא ֹות י
ָ שׁנֵי־ ְ ִלśārê ṣiḇə’wōṯ yiśərā’ēl
to the two commanders of the armies Sarviae, quae fecerit
of Israel, to Abner the son of Ner, and duobus principibus
to Amasa the son of Jether, whom he בֶּן־נֵר ְו ַלעֲמָ שָׂא בֶן־י ֶתֶ ר ַויַּה ְַרגֵםlə’aḇənēr ben-nēr exercitus Israel, Abner
wəl ‘ămāśā’ ḇen-yeṯer
שֹׁלם ַויּ ִתֵּ ן
ָ ַויּ ָשֶׂ ם דְּ ֵמי־ ִמ ְל ָחמָה ְבּ
a
killed; he also shed the blood of war in filio Ner et Amasae filio
ֶבּח ֶָרב׃
him by the LORD, saying, `I will not liqərā’ṯî hayyarədēn Mahanaim; sed quia
put you to death with the sword.' wā’eššāḇa‘ lwō ḇayhwâ descendit mihi in
lē’mōr ’im-’ămîṯəḵā occursum ad Iordanem,
beḥāreḇ: et iuravi ei per Dominum
dicens: Non te
interficiam gladio.
9. "Now therefore, do not let him go ְועַתָּ ה אַל־תְּ נַקֵּהוּ כִּי אִ ישׁ ָחכָם 9 wə‘atâ ’al-tənaqqēhû kî Tu noli pati esse eum
’îš ḥāḵām ’ātâ wəyāḏa‘ətā
שׁר תַּ ֲעשֶׂה־ֹּלו ֶ אָתָּ ה ְוי ָדַ עְתָּ אֵת ֲא
unpunished, for you are a wise man; innoxium; vir autem
ֵאלָיו דַּ בֵּר׃
to him, "Speak." tāšiḇî ’eṯ-pānāy watō’mer confundas faciem meam
’ēlāyw dabēr: ”. Quae dixit ad eum: “
Loquere ”.
17. Then he said, "Please speak to וַיּ ֹאמֶר ִאמ ְִרי־נָא לִשְׁ ֹלמ ֹה ַה ֶמּלְֶך כִּי17 wayyō’mer ’imərî-nā’ Et ille ait: “ Precor, ut
Solomon the king, for he will not ֹלא־י ָשִׁ יב אֶת־ ָפּנָי ְִך ְוי ִתֶּ ן־לִי lišəlōmōh hammeleḵə kî dicas Salomoni regi —
אֶת־ ֲאבִישַׁג הַשּׁוּנַמִּית ְל ִאשָּׁה׃
refuse you, that he may give me lō’-yāšîḇ ’eṯ-pānāyiḵə neque enim negare tibi
Abishag the Shunammite as a wife." wəyiten-lî ’eṯ-’ăḇîšaḡ quidquam potest — ut
haššûnammîṯ lə’iššâ: det mihi Abisag
Sunamitin uxorem ”.
18. Bathsheba said, "Very well; I will שׁבַע ט ֹוב אָנֹכִי אֲדַ בֵּר
ֶ וַתּ ֹאמֶר בַּת־ 18 watō’mer baṯ-šeḇa‘ Et ait Bethsabee: “ Bene,
ṭwōḇ ’ānōḵî ’ăḏabēr
ָעלֶיָך אֶ ל־ ַה ֶמּלְֶך׃
speak to the king for you." ego loquar pro te regi ”.

19. So Bathsheba went to King Solomon שׁ
ֶ בַע אֶ ל־הַמֶּ לְֶך שְֹׁלמ ֹה וַתָּ ב ֹא בַת־ 19 watāḇō’ ḇaṯ-šeḇa‘ ’el- Venit ergo Bethsabee ad
לְדַ בֶּר־ֹלו עַל־אֲדֹנִיּ ָהוּ ַויָּקָם ַה ֶמּלְֶך
to speak to him for Adonijah. And the hammeleḵə šəlōmōh regem Salomonem, ut
ֵמעִם י ְהוָה׃
throne, may there be peace from the ûləḵisə’wō yihəyeh autem et semini eius et
LORD forever." šālwōm ‘aḏ-‘wōlām domui et throno illius sit
mē‘im yəhwâ: pax usque in aeternum a
Domino ”.
34. Then Benaiah the son of Jehoiada ַויַּעַל ְבּנָי ָהוּ בֶּן־י ְה ֹוי ָדָ ע ַויּ ִ ְפגַּע־בּ ֹו 34 wayya‘al bənāyâû ben- Ascendit itaque Banaias
ַויְמִתֵ הוּ ַויּ ִ ָקּבֵר ְבּבֵית ֹו ַבּמִּדְ בָּר׃
went up and fell upon him and put him yəhwōyāḏā‘ wayyifəga‘- filius Ioiadae et
to death, and he was buried at his own bwō wayəmiṯēhû aggressus eum interfecit;
house in the wilderness. wayyiqqāḇēr bəḇêṯwō sepultusque est in domo
bammiḏəbār: sua in deserto.
35. The king appointed Benaiah the son of ַויּ ִתֵּ ן ַה ֶמּלְֶך אֶת־ ְבּנָי ָהוּ בֶן־י ְה ֹוי ָדָ ע35 wayyitēn hammeleḵə Et constituit rex Banaiam
’eṯ-bənāyâû ḇen-
תַּ חְתָּ יו עַל־ ַה ָצּבָא ְואֶת־צָד ֹוק הַכֹּהֵןyəhwōyāḏā‘ taḥətāyw ‘al-
Jehoiada over the army in his place, filium Ioiadae pro eo
שׁמְ עִי
ִ בֶּן־ ַמ ֲעכָה ֶמלְֶך גַּת ַויַּגִּידוּ ְל
Shimei ran away to Achish son of ‘ăḇāḏîm ləšimə‘î ’el-’āḵîš duo servi Semei ad Achis
Maacah, king of Gath. And they told ben-ma‘ăḵâ meleḵə gaṯ filium Maacha regem
Shimei, saying, "Behold, your לֵאמ ֹר ִהנֵּה ֲעבָדֶ יָך ְבּגַת׃ wayyagîḏû ləšimə‘î Geth; nuntiatumque est
servants are in Gath." lē’mōr hinnēh ‘ăḇāḏeyḵā Semei quod servi eius
bəḡaṯ: essent in Geth.
40. Then Shimei arose and saddled his שׁמְ עִי ַויַּחֲב ֹשׁ אֶת־חֲמ ֹר ֹו ַויֵּלְֶךִ ַויּ ָקָ ם40 wayyāqām šimə‘î Et surrexit Semei et
wayy ḥăḇōš ’eṯ-ḥămōrwō
גַּתָ ה אֶל־אָכִישׁ ְל ַבקֵּשׁ אֶ ת־ ֲעבָדָ יוwayyēleḵə gaṯâ ’el-’āḵîš
a
donkey, and went to Gath to Achish to stravit asinum suum
1 Kings 3
1. Then Solomon formed a marriage ’ ַויּ ִתְ חַתֵּ ן שְֹׁלמ ֹה ֶאת־פּ ְַרע ֹה ֶמלְֶךeṯ-parə‘ōh
1 wayyiṯəḥatēn šəlōmōh Et affinitate coniunctus
ָסבִיב׃
yərûšālaim sāḇîḇ: Domini et murum

2. The people were still sacrificing on ַרק ָהעָם ְמזַ ְבּחִים ַבּבָּמ ֹות כִּי 2 raq hā‘ām məzabəḥîm Attamen populus
הַהוּא׃
šəlōmōh ‘al hammizəbēḥa in holocaustum obtulit
hahû’: Salomon super altare
illud.
5. In Gibeon the LORD appeared to ְבּגִבְע ֹון נ ְִראָה י ְהֹוָה אֶל־שְֹׁלמ ֹהyəhwōâ
5 bəḡiḇə‘wōn nirə’â In Gabaon apparuit
ָחכָם ְונָב ֹון ֲאשֶׁר כָּמ ֹוָך לְָך לֵבnāṯatî ləḵā lēḇ ḥāḵām
words. Behold, I have given you a kiḏəḇāreyḵā hinnēh| sermones tuos et dedi tibi
wise and discerning heart, so that
ֹלא־ ָהי ָה ְל ָפנֶיָך וְאַח ֲֶריָך
cor sapiens et intellegens,
there has been no one like you before wənāḇwōn ’ăšer in tantum ut nullus ante
כָּל־י ָ ֶמיָך׃
bamməlāḵîm kāl- similis tui in regibus
yāmeyḵā: cunctis diebus tuis.
14. "If you walk in My ways, keeping My ֵ לְֵך בִּדְ ָרכַי ִלשְׁמ ֹר ֻח ַקּי ְואִם תּ14 wə’im| tēlēḵə
biḏərāḵay lišəmōr ḥuqqay

house; and I gave birth to a child
while she was in the house. ֶאחָד ָו ֵאלֵד ִעמָּהּ ַבּ ָבּי ִת׃ bəḇayiṯ ’eḥāḏ wā’ēlēḏ
‘immāh babāyiṯ:
habitabamus in domo
una, et peperi apud eam
in domo;
18. "It happened on the third day after I שׁי ְללִדְ תִּ י ַויְהִי בַּיּ ֹוִ שּׁלִי
ְ ם ַה 18 wayəhî bayywōm tertia vero die, postquam
יָלָדְ תִּ י׃
whom I had borne." babōqer wəhinnēh lō’- clara luce, deprehendi
hāyâ ḇənî ’ăšer yālāḏətî: non esse meum, quem
genueram ”.
22. Then the other woman said, "No! For וַתּ ֹאמֶר ָה ִאשָּׁה הָאַח ֶֶרת ֹלא כִי 22 watō’mer hā’iššâ
hā’aḥereṯ lō’ ḵî bənî haḥay

23. Also in the inner sanctuary he made שׁנֵי כְרוּבִים ְ ַויַּעַשׂ בַּדְּ בִיר 23 wayya‘aś badəḇîr šənê

14. Then the king faced about and blessed ’ ַויַּסֵּב ַה ֶמּלְֶך ֶאת־ ָפּנָיו ַויְב ֶָרְךeṯ-pānāyw
14 wayyassēḇ hammeleḵə Convertitque rex faciem
’ ֵאת כָּל־ ְקהַל יִשׂ ְָראֵל ְוכָל־ ְקהַלēṯ kāl-qəhal yiśərā’ēl ecclesiae Israel; omnis
all the assembly of Israel, while all the wayəḇāreḵə suam et benedixit omni
assembly of Israel was standing.
יִשׂ ְָראֵל עֹמֵד׃ wəḵāl-qəhal yiśərā’ēl

15. He said, "Blessed be the LORD, the וַיּ ֹאמֶר בָּרוְּך י ְהוָה אֱֹלהֵי 15 wayyō’mer bārûḵə Et ait: “ Benedictus
עִם־ ְל ָבבֶָך׃
hĕṭîḇōṯā kî hāyâ ‘im- nomini meo, bene fecisti
ləḇāḇeḵā: hoc ipsum mente
tractans;
19. `Nevertheless you shall not build the ַרק ַאתָּ ה ֹלא תִ ְבנֶה ַה ָבּי ִת כִּי 19 raq ’atâ lō’ ṯiḇəneh verumtamen tu non
שּׁ ַמי ִם
ָ ֵאין־כָּמ ֹוָך אֱֹלהִים ַבּ
there is no God like You in heaven ’ĕlōhê yiśərā’ēl ’ên- Israel, non est similis tui
above or on earth beneath, keeping
ָאָרץ ִמ ָתּחַת שֹׁמֵר ֶ ִמ ַמּעַל ְועַל־הwə‘al-hā’āreṣ
kāmwōḵā ’ĕlōhîm Deus in caelo desuper et
covenant and showing lovingkindness baššāmayim mimma‘al super terra deorsum, qui
to Your servants who walk before You mitāḥaṯ custodis pactum et

27. "But will God indeed dwell on the כִּי ַה ֻא ְמנָם יֵשֵׁב אֱֹלהִים 27 kî ha’umənām yēšēḇ Ergone putandum est
שׁמֵי ְ שּׁ ַמי ִם וּ
ָ ָאָרץ ִהנֵּה ַהֶ עַל־ה
earth? Behold, heaven and the highest ’ĕlōhîm ‘al-hā’āreṣ quod vere Deus habitet
heaven cannot contain You, how
שּׁ ַמי ִם ָ ֹלא י ְ ַכ ְלכְּלוָּך אַף ַה
hinnēh haššāmayim super terram? Si enim
much less this house which I have ûšəmê haššāmayim lō’ caelum et caeli caelorum
ַלאֲב ֹותָ ם׃ ס

ִ שׁבְתֶּ ָך ְו ָס ַלחְתָּ ְו ָע

place, and forgive and act and render haššāmayim məḵwōn habitationis tuae et
to each according to all his ways, šiḇəteḵā wəsālaḥətā
ָל ִאישׁ ְכּכָל־דְּ ָרכָיו ֲאשֶׁר תֵּ דַ עwə‘āśîṯā
repropitiaberis et facies,
whose heart You know, for You alone wənāṯatā lā’îš ut des unicuique
ֶאת־ ְלבָב ֹו כִּי־ ַאתָּ ה י ָדַ עְתָּ ְלבַדְּ ָךtēḏa‘ ’eṯ-ləḇāḇwō kî-’atâ
know the hearts of all the sons of men, kəḵāl-dərāḵāyw ’ăšer secundum omnes vias

You. lišəmō‘a ’ălêhem bəḵōl pro quibus invocaverint
qārə’ām ’ēleyḵā: te.
53. "For You have separated them from כִּי־ ַאתָּ ה ִהבְדַּ לְתָּ ם לְָך ְלנַ ֲחלָה53 kî-’atâ hiḇədalətām Tu enim separasti eos tibi
all the peoples of the earth as Your ָָאָרץ ַכּ ֲאשֶׁר דִּ בּ ְַרתֶּ מִכּ ֹל ַעמֵּי ה ləḵā lənaḥălâ mikōl in hereditatem de
י ְהוִה׃ ף
O Lord GOD." ’eṯ-’ăḇōṯênû quando eduxisti patres

Israel dedicated the house of the wəṣō’n mē’â wə‘eśərîm ovium centum viginti
LORD.

`You shall not lack a man on the dibarətî ‘al-dāwiḏ ’āḇîḵā locutus sum David patri
יִשׂ ְָראֵל׃
mē‘al kissē’ yiśərā’ēl: de genere tuo vir de solio

6. "But if you or your sons indeed turn אִם־שׁ ֹוב תְּ שֻׁבוּן ַאתֶּ ם וּ ְבנֵיכֶם 6 ’im-šwōḇ təšuḇûn ’atem

desire), then King Solomon gave ləḵāl-ḥefəṣwō aurum iuxta omne quod

12. So Hiram came out from Tyre to see ִירם ִמצּ ֹר ל ְִרא ֹות

14. And Hiram sent to the king 120 talents מּלְֶך מֵאָה ֶ ל

labor which King Solomon levied to ’ăšer-he‘ĕlâ| hammeleḵə indictionis, quam
שְֹׁלמ ֹה׃
wife. hārāḡ wayyitənāh interfecit; et dedit eam in
šilluḥîm ləḇitwō ’ēšeṯ dotem filiae suae uxori

17. So Solomon rebuilt Gezer and the ַויִּבֶן שְֹׁלמ ֹה ֶאת־ ָגּזֶר ְו ֶאת־בֵּית 17 wayyiḇen šəlōmōh ’eṯ- Aedificavit ergo
gāzer wə’eṯ-bêṯ ḥōrōn

the LORD, burning incense with them hammizəbēḥa ’ăšer bānâ holocausta et pacificas

1. Now when the queen of Sheba heard 1 ûmaləkaṯ-šəḇā’ šōm ‘aṯ Sed et regina Saba,
ֹלא־ ָהי ָה דָּ בָר נֶ ְעלָם מִן־ ַה ֶמּלְֶךhāyâ dāḇār ne‘əlām min- proposuerat: non fuit
nothing was hidden from the king lō’- omnia verba, quae
which he did not explain to her.

talents of gold,

15. besides that from the traders and the ְלבַד ֵמאַנְשֵׁי הַתָּ ִרים וּ ִמ ְסחַר 15 ləḇaḏ mē’anəšê praeter id, quod

per civitates quadrigarum
hāreḵeḇ wə‘im- et cum rege in Ierusalem.

’ ְוהֵם ֹלא־י ָב ֹאוּ ָבכֶם אָכֵן י ַטּוּāḵēn yaṭṭû
Israel: “ Non
nor shall they associate with you, for wəhēm lō’-yāḇō’û ḇāḵem ingrediemini ad eas,
after their gods." Solomon held fast to אֹלהֵיהֶם ֱ ֶאת־ ְל ַב ְבכֶם אַח ֲֵרי
they will surely turn your heart away ’eṯ-ləḇaḇəḵem neque de illis

שׁ ֻקּץ מ ֹואָב ָבּהָר ֲאשֶׁר עַל־ ְפּנֵי ִ mwō’āḇ bâār ’ăšer ‘al-
Chemosh the detestable idol of Moab, liḵəmwōš šiqquṣ Salomon fanum Chamos
on the mountain which is east of
שׁקֻּץ ְבּנֵי ִ י ְרוּשָׁלָ ִם וּלְמֹלְֶך
idolo Moab in monte, qui
Jerusalem, and for Molech the pənê yərûšālāim est contra Ierusalem, et
עַמּ ֹון׃
detestable idol of the sons of Ammon. ûləmōleḵə šiqquṣ bənê Melchom idolo filiorum

Edom fuerant interfecti, et

16. (for Joab and all Israel stayed there six שׁים יָשַׁב־שָׁם ִ ָשׁשֶׁת חֳד ֵ כִּי 16 kî šēšeṯ ḥŏḏāšîm — sex enim mensibus ibi
שׁ ְלּ ֵחנִי ְו ֵאלְֵך
ַ אֶל־פּ ְַרע ֹה
me away, that I may go to my own haṣṣāḇā’ wayyō’mer principem militiae, dixit
country."

hăḏaḏ ’el-parə‘ōh pharaoni: “ Dimitte me,
šalləḥēnî wə’ēlēḵə ’el- ut vadam in terram meam
’arəṣî: ”.
22. Then Pharaoh said to him, "But what וַיּ ֹאמֶר ֹלו פ ְַרע ֹה כִּי מָה־ ַאתָּ ה 22 wayyō’mer lwō
farə‘ōh kî mâ-’atâ ḥāsēr
Dixitque ei pharao: “
שׁ ְלּ ֵחנִי׃
ַ ְתּ
nevertheless you must surely let me ’arəṣeḵā wayyō’mer| lō’ respondit: “ Nulla; sed
go." kî šallēḥa təšalləḥēnî: obsecro, ut dimittas me ”.
23. God also raised up another adversary ת־רז ֹון
ְ שׂטָן ֶא ָ ַויָּקֶם אֱֹלהִים ֹלו 23 wayyāqem ’ĕlōhîm
lwō śāṭān ’eṯ-rəzwōn ben-
Suscitavit quoque Deus
עַל־א ֲָרם׃ ף
bəyiśərā’ēl wayyiməlōḵə detestatus est Israel
‘al-’ărām: f regnavitque in Syria.
26. Then Jeroboam the son of Nebat, an ְוי ָָר ְבעָם בֶּן־נְבָט ֶאפ ְָרתִ י 26 wəyārāḇə‘ām ben- Ieroboam quoque filius
שּׂדֶה׃
ָ שׁנֵיהֶם ְלבַדָּ ם ַבּ ְ וּ
both of them were alone in the field. miṯəkasseh bəśaləmâ opertus pallio novo; erant
ḥăḏāšâ ûšənêhem autem duo tantum in
ləḇadām baśśāḏeh: agro.
30. Then Ahijah took hold of the new שּׂ ְלמָה ַהחֲדָ שָׁה ַ ַויּ ִתְ פּ ֹשׂ ֲא ִחיּ ָה ַבּbaśśaləmâ30 wayyiṯəpōś ’ăḥîyâ Apprehendensque Ahias
haḥăḏāšâ ’ăšer pallium suum novum,
שׁנֵים ָעשָׂר ְ ‘ ֲאשֶׁר ָעלָיו ַויִּק ְָר ֶע ָהālāyw wayyiqərā‘ehā quo coopertus erat, scidit
cloak which was on him and tore it
into twelve pieces.

32 wəhaššēḇeṭ hā’eḥāḏ Porro una tribus
Moab, and Milcom the god of the sons מלְכּ ֹם אֱֹלהֵי ִ אֱֹלהֵי מ ֹואָב וּ ְלûləmiləkōm ’ĕlōhê mwō’āḇ Chamos deum Moab et
’ĕlōhê ḇənê- Melchom deum filiorum
in My ways, doing what is right in My הלְכוּ בִדְ ָרכַי ָ ְבנֵי־עַמּ ֹון וְֹלא־
of Ammon; and they have not walked
שׁתֶ נּוּ כּ ֹל יְמֵיִ שׂיא ֲאִ ָ ִמיּ ָד ֹו כִּי נkî| nāśî’ ’ăšiṯennû kōl
kingdom out of his hand, but I will hammaməlāḵâ mîyāḏwō regnum de manu eius,
make him ruler all the days of his life,
ַחיּ ָיו ְל ַמעַן דָּ וִד ַעבְדִּ י ֲאשֶׁר
sed ducem ponam eum
for the sake of My servant David yəmê ḥayyāyw ləma‘an cunctis diebus vitae suae
36. `But to his son I will give one tribe, שׁבֶט־ ֶאחָד ְל ַמעַן ֵ ְו ִלבְנ ֹו ֶאתֵּ ן 36 wəliḇənwō ’etēn filio autem eius dabo
שׁ ִמי שָׁם׃ ְ
’ăšer bāḥarətî lî lāśûm civitate, quam elegi, ut
šəmî šām: esset nomen meum ibi.
37. `I will take you, and you shall reign וְא ֹתְ ָך ֶאקַּח וּ ָמ ַל ְכ ָתּ בְּכ ֹל 37 wə’ōṯəḵā ’eqqaḥ Te autem assumam, et
עַל־יִשׂ ְָראֵל׃
shall be king over Israel. tə’aûeh nafəšeḵā quae desiderat anima tua,
wəhāyîṯā mmeleḵə ‘al- erisque rex super Israel.
