Christophe Honore, 2007
Ismael (Louis Garrel) and Julie (Ludivine Sagnier) become involved in a three-way relationship when they
both fall for Alice (Clotilde Hesme), but the complicated emotional entanglements unravel after a tragedy.
Trying to soothe his pain, Ismael drifts from one meaningless encounter to another, until he meets a young

UN PROPHÈTE (A PROPHET)
Jacques Audiard, 2009
After refusing to snitch, 18-year-old Arab Malik (Tahar Rahim) is thrown into a French prison, where the
Corsican mafia rules with a firm fist. The obedient newcomer slowly rises through the organization’s ranks but
soon begins to double-cross his superiors. A follow-up to his 2005 gem The Beat My Heart Skipped, French
director Jacques Audiard’s A Prophet was nominated for an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film.

LA FILLE DU RER (THE GIRL ON THE RER)
Andrè Tèchinè, 2009
Inspired by a true story, director André Téchiné’s riveting drama centers on a young Parisian woman (Émilie
Dequenne) who captures the attention of her country when she claims she’s been the target of a hate crime.
International film legend Catherine Deneuve also stars in this ripped-from-the-headlines tale, which explores
the power of prejudice and the diminishing credibility of modern-day media.

ENTRE LES MURS (THE CLASS)
Laurent Cantet, 2009
In an inventive adaptation of his novel about his experiences working in one of the roughest neighborhoods
in Paris, François Bégaudeau stars as a replica of himself -- a passionate French teacher who presides over
a classroom of diverse young minds. Not your standard drama or documentary but something in between,
this Oscar-nominated film used three cameras during a largely improvisational shoot and features real
students rather than actors.
