Research has always been thought of as inaccessible to the masses. It has often been neglected due to the notion that quality research is impossible in our country due to the lack of infrastructure and technical knowhow. The time is here for us to discard these age old beliefs and realize that research is integral to the development of the nation. Medical research is absolutely essential for the improvement of the state of healthcare in our country and this idea should be thoroughly rooted to the psyche of the modern medical practitioner. Promoting research at the undergraduate level will lead to increased quality and scope of clinical research for the foreseeable future. I am extremely happy that the students of our college have taken up the initiative to organise the International Conference of Undergraduate Medical Research MEDICON 2011. It is a novel concept that has been embraced by our students with the utmost enthusiasm and zeal. With the assistance of our esteemed faculty, they have worked tirelessly towards making this conference a success and I am glad to see that their efforts have borne fruits and culminated in a conference par excellence.

Dr T.P. lahane (Padmashree) Dean, Grant Medical College & President, MEDICON 2011.

I am happy that my alma mater has the proud privilege of hosting an international conference of medical research: MEDICON 2011! Post independence the priority of our nation was to develop a public health infrastructure; a large manpower of healthcare providers were trained. We developed many specialities and sub-specialities. Today, we have succeeded in keeping pace with advanced medical science. Institutes dedicated to medical research were established separately. have been the seat of medical research. However the medical colleges should

No doubt the research of our faculty members like Dr. Shirodkar, Dr. NH Wadia, Dr. RKGadgil and so on received worldwide acclaim for their research contributions to medicine. Now, it is heartening to see our students learning research methodologies and preparing for medical research work. Research is an aptitude-it needs a base of sound knowledge, keen observation, documentation, Inquisitiveness, rational analysis along with persistence and perseverance. A sophisticated lab or huge funds are not the pre-requisites of research as shown by "Dr. Bawaskar's work on scorpion stings". I congratulate our. all the participants of MEDICON 2011 and wish them great success in their research endeav-

Or Alaka K. Deshpande Professor of Medicine, & Executive President,

(Padmashree) Grant Medical College MEDICON 2011.

Research ls an absolute necessity for the development of an excellent healthcare system. Therefore it is of the utmost importance to imbibe, inculcate, nourish and nurture research aptitude in all doctors, teachers and students. Sensitization and exposure to research in the undergraduate days itself would definitely contribute to improving the standards of medical research in our country. MEDICON 2011, organised by the students of Grant Medical College & Sir J.J. Group of Hospitals, Mumbai would be a giant step towards the achievement of this goal. Iwish the participants and the organisers the best and hope that the conference is a huge success. Or A.G. Valand Vice Dean, Grant Medical College & Vice President, MEDICON 2011.

As an alumnus of our Alma Mater and one whose close association with the Grant Medical College and J J Hospital goes back to 70 years, I am delighted and proud that the present students of our college have taken responsibility to host this prestigious conference, Medicon 2011. I am most impressed with the four day program that has been planned in which students and faculty not only from our College but from all over India and abroad have agreed to participate. On behalf of the Moving Academy of Medicine and Bio-medicine which has been the motivating force for the formation of the Forum for Medical Students Research India (INFORMER) and the succeeding conferences, I wish the conference all success. Many congratulations on your great effort. Noshir H Wadia M.D./F. R.C.P.( LOND.),F .N.A., F.A.M .S.,F .A.Sc. D.Sc.( Hons.) I am delighted to know that Medlcon 2011 will be held in Grant Medical College, Mumbai. This is the third conference by the students for the students. The first two were held in Mangalore and Coimbatore. Young medicos should be complemented for taking this initiative, which is a landmark in undergraduate medical education. The Academy is very happy that it played a small role in its evolution. It was at the Second National Medical Students research conference that was hosted by the Academy in 2006 in Pune, that a decision to form a student research forum (INFORMER) was taken. I would like to compliment the Dean and the teaching faculty of the college for extending full support to the conference and guiding students to formulate a very balanced program covering all facets of medical and health research. Medicon is now a well established annual event in India. It is time that the concept is internationalized. Academy will be very happy to assist the INFORMER in this endeavor. I send my greeting and best wishes to MEDICON 2011 which Is bound to be a huge success. Dr. M. G. Deo (Padmashree) MD, PhD, FAMS, FNA Vice President & Secretary, Moving Academy of Medicine and Biomedicine.

It is a moment of great pride and honor for me to write this message for Medicon 2011. It has been two years since the first Medicon, hosted entirely by students, was held at Mangalore under the banner of INFORMER.The graph of students' enthusiasm seems to be only going up since then. The quality of research work being presented at this conference is getting better each year. And students are not just coming forward to present their work but a lot of them want to help others too by helping in organising workshops and other such events as well. Dr Abhimanyu and his team is one such group out of the many more spread all over the country whose efforts are beyond commendation. It takes great courage and grit to take up something that Abhimanyu and his team have taken upon them. I wish them all successand hope that this conference will achieve its objectives and will be asfulfilling for all its participants, as it was hope to be, and perhaps even more. All this reckons that the time hascome for the much awaited change in the medical education scenario in India. Continuing from what Swami Vivekanand once said, we have woken up and arisen (and are active in scientific research) and now let's just not stop till the Nobel prize in Medicine is achieved by an Indian.

"And miles

to go before I sleep ...And miles to go before I sleep."

These lines of Sir Robert Frost have been the inspiration for all of us at MEDICON 2011. We adopted the conference under the flagship of The Forum for Medical Students' Research, India (INFORMER) one year ago and have nurtured it to its present glory. INFORMER came to me as serendipitously in 2009. The presentation of my paper at MEOICON 2009, sowed the first seeds of a vision to host it in my alma-mater. Today, this vision has transcended into reality as MEDICON 2011. MEDICON this year has attracted more than SSOstudents from 15 different countries. We've got more than 500 submissions and although we wanted all of them to share their research ideas but we've been able to serve the very best 340 papers. MEDICON is a confluence of great minds that have enriched the research community in the past with the leaders of the scientific tomorrow. The theme for this year MEDICON is 'Medicine GenNext'. We give you a sneak peek into the not so distant future through the plenary sessions which have been meticulously planned to display streaks of the impact quotient of Translational Medicine and the responsibility of the medical scientist in the future. Behind every successful event is a pile of tired organizers and inspiring figures- In our case, the Three Padmashrees Dr T.P. Lahane, Dr A.K. Deshpande and Dr M.G. Oeo. I'd like to pass my heartfelt thanks and regards to all of them for always being there for us. I'd also like to thank all my teachers and my fellow team-mates who have been the real building-blocks of this event. Last but not the least, I'd like to pay homage to my alma-mater Grant Medical College for having infused in me the attributes required to never give up against all odds. WE WELCOME YOU with open arms to embrace this event and make it your own with fondest of memories. let there be lightll Regards, Dr Abhimanyu Singh Organizing Secretary
