ICDL 2010 Exam Grade 8 Students Guide

Objectives
The ICDL final exam for Module 3 - Word Processing will be held in early December, 2010. The exam format is approximately 36 questions for each subject in multiple choice format. This is the same format you have been practicing all year in Moodle and with Question Tools. Students should prepare to succeed in these exams by undertaking the activities in this study guide, and by reviewing notes taken throughout the year. Key learnings include: Vocabulary used in the exam Vocabulary used to describe functions in Microsoft Word Understanding the key functions of Microsoft Word Practice tests

IMPORTANT - MULTIPLE CHOICE EXAM TECHNIQUE

Read questions carefully Read answers carefully Look for key words in both the questions and the answers especially toolbar and menu If there are matching words in both question and answer, then that answer is likely to be correct. Do not rush your answers. Think carefully. Do not guess the answers. You can work out the answer with logical thinking. Use the process of elimination. Eliminate (remove) the answers that cannot possibly be right, then consider the remaining options carefully

Advanced Questions

Many questions are written to test your comprehension of English expression. Here are some examples. Read each question very carefully. Watch for information on which method to use menu item, toolbar button or keyboard shortcut. Q. Which of the following best describes the action, change the zoom view to page width? Viewing text, margin to margin Viewing typed text, page edge to page edge Viewing typed text, 100% zoom Viewing typed text by the Whole Page

The answer is highlighted in yellow. The reason is because page width means from one edge of the paper to the other edge. Q. The Word feature that best describes advancing the insertion point to a preset line position or to align columns is... Indentation Tab Stop Alignment Spacing

The answer is highlighted in yellow. Pressing the Tab key advances your cursor to the next preset Tab Stop and is also used to align columns. Indentation is the process of advancing the insertion point to the preset Indent <arker. As you can see, its very important to read the question carefully. Q. This feature is used to indent text to a preset horizontal position for the current line Indentation Tab Stop Alignment Spacing

The answer is highlighted in yellow. This is similar to the last question, but this time it uses the word indent, which is your key to the answer. Q. Inserting the word, Freecall, at the current insertion point will... Replace text to the left of the insertion point Insert text to the left of the insertion point Insert text to the right of the insertion point Replace text to the right of the insertion point

ICDL 2010 Exam Grade 8 Students Guide

The answer is highlighted in yellow. This question requires an understanding of the key words insert, to the left and insertion point. When you start to type, your text will be inserted into the document at the current insertion point. Q. You want to insert text at the current insertion point. Which of the below applies?

The new text will automatically merge to the 2nd cell of the current row The new text will automatically wrap within the current cell The new text will automatically extend the cell width to fit the text The new text will be automatically truncated when the maximum cell width is reached

The answer is highlighted in yellow. A cell is one box within the table. The default behaviour for a cell is that the text wraps once you reach the end of the cell. Q. A form document and a data document are required to successfully generate which of the above Word functions? Table of Contents Mail Merge Document Index Table of Authorities

The answer is highlighted in yellow. A mail merge combines a letter (form) with some data to create letters for multiple recipients. Q. Before final output of your Word document, which of the above proofing activities would be most beneficial? Document Layout Consistent Text Styles Spelling and Grammar Check All of the above

The answer is highlighted in yellow. It is important to proof-read your document to ensure it is completely ready for others to read. You should check that the layout (margins, orientation and paper size) is correct, that the fonts and text styles are consistent, and that spelling and grammar are correct.
